2008 Kings.com Monarchs Preview (UPDATED)

Projected Starting Five
PF – Rebecca Brunson
SF – Nicole Powell
PF – Adrian Williams-Strong
PG – Ticha Penichiero
SG – Chelsea Newton

Key Acquisitions – Laura Harper
Key Bench Players – Kara Lawson, Aquanisha Franklin, Laura Harper, Sholanda Robinson

BACKCOURT – PENICHIERO, NEWTON, LAWSON, FRANKLIN
The back court of Ticha Penicheiro and Chelsea Newton is defensively one of the best, if not the best defensive back court in the WNBA. They both enter in 2008 both slightly injured. As great as they both are defensively, we all know on the offensive end they both still are extremely inconsistent, particularly from the outside; that has to change. This is how tough it was in '07. Between Ticha, Chelsea and Kara their combined field goal percentage was 36 percent. THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! They hit a combined 59 3's, and Lawson had 45 of them. Newton especially is going to have to offensively grow up, she has to find a way to consistently knock down a shot. To be perfectly honest, if I were the coach, Kara Lawson would be starting this season at the two, and Aqua Franklin would be thrown in as the back up point guard to either sink or swim. But I know Coach Jenny is not going to do that because of defense, and I understand. Kara Lawson is the most valuable back court member of the Monarchs. She will be depended upon to be the team leader/spokesperson, the back up point guard, the back up two guard, the sixth player off the bench.

FRONTCOURT – BRUNSON, POWELL, WILLIAMS-STRONG, ROBINSON, ATKINSON
If the Monarchs have any shot of competing this season, it has to be because Nicole Powell is playing at an All-Star level, it is just that simple. For years the Monarchs have been built to share the load offensively. I don't think this team has ever had a player to average 20 points per night. Nicole Powell, I feel has to come close to being that player. The player that is offensively can will lead a team in the fourth quarter and be “the man” (so to speak) She is the only player on this team that is capable to carry “the” offensive load, and we saw some of that last season. Rebekkah Brunson has grown up now. It is time to show the league that she has the talent and is worthy to be spoken about as an upper echelon player. She is by far the best offensive rebounder in the game today, and provides the most energy on the team. If there is one aspect I would like to see Bekkah improve upon is her free throw shooting. Last season she had 140 attempts, and shot 68 percent. and I expect that number to increase because of the attention she will command Adrian Williams-Strong by default is now the Monarchs third starting frontcourt player. Adrian must improve in 2008. She is known around these parts as the player that can not handle the ball. I would like to see that change, as well as her rebounding. She averaged 7.4 rebounds per game in 2003, so she is capable. The Monarchs were the worst defensive rebounding team in the league. I believe Adrian can fix that by going after the tough rebounds rebekkah can't get.

RESERVES
Besides Kara Lawson, the most important player off the bench in my opinion will be Scholanda Robinson. “Scho-time” when she comes into the game will have to continue to provide a spark. She gets to the basket better than anybody else on this team. I have always said her game reminds me so much of Latrell Sprewell. Energy, hustle, slashing to the rim, quickness, midrange pull up jumpers. Hopefully her knee injury does not preclude her from what she does. The only other thing we can ask from Franklin, Atkinson and Harper is when they come in, do not press the issue and make constant mistakes. They are all so young, and not much should be expected. Since John Whisnant came on board, Sacramento always claimed the deepest bench in the league; 11 deep. On paper I don't believe that is the case anymore. Right now Coach Boucek may have to depend upon an eight player rotation at best, until the young reserves can prove themselves.

COACHING - COACH JENNY BOUCEK
This is Coach Boucek's locker room now. She must fully place her finger prints on this squad. I never thought she had free reign to do so last year being Coach Whisnant's successor and with the presence of Yolanda Griffith. I like Coach Jenny; I feel her passion for the game is second to none in this league. I believe her defensive acumen fits this squad and this organization.

OFFENSE
Offensively, there must be some adjustments. Coach Jenny always felt that the team's offense had to be sacrificed for the sake of defense. I never bought that for one second, and still don't believe it. I felt that she never held her players offensively accountable for the turnovers and lack of shot selection, especially Ticha Penichiero. The key to the game is putting the ball in the basket, but that is hard to do when you are running the shot clock down to under five seconds and then throwing a shot up. It is hard to score when the defense is playing five on four and packing in the lane because your perimeter players will not be aggressive. The Monarchs in 2007 were eleventh in FG percentage (.407), twelve in three point attempts, twelve in three pointers made, eighth in total points, and ninth in total points. I understand that this is a defensive squad and still should be, but when the WNBA champions are lighting up the score board (they averaged 83.7 on Monarchs) every single night, the standard offensively has been raised.

DEFENSE
The Monarchs took a step back last season defensively. The Monarchs were tenth in defensive field goal percentage behind the likes of Seattle, Washington and Phoenix which are not known for defense. I feel that the team defended the perimeter fairly well in '07 (Monarchs led the league in steals), but I also believe that they gave up way too many second chance points and points in the paint (twelve in block shots). I am not an expert on the vaunted White Line Defense, but I will say that defensively the teams post play was not the same play we saw under Coach Whisnant. This was I feel the biggest flaw in 2007 that must change in '08. Team defensive quickness I think is outstanding. The wings and point play straight up ball on ball defense better than anybody else. But where the break down happens is once the ball gets into the post and our wings collapse, leaving players like Jia Perkins, Alana Beard and Seimone Augustus wide open for uncontested shots......and then we don't get the rebound. I hope a healthy Chelsea Newton and a more mobile Kara Lawson can fix that.

INTANGIBLES
The key intangibles for 2008 is home court advantage and veteran leadership. Do not let teams like Chicago, Minnesota come into Arco feeling free about their offense. For the most part I thought home court was pretty good in '07. But games like Chicago and Minnesota cost the team home court advantage against San Antonio in the playoffs. As far as leadership, are Powell and Brunson ready to help Ticha and Kara lead this team. Powell and Brunson normally are the quiet types that lead with their play, but they are the two best players on the team, and with the lost of the two most vocal in Griffith and DeMya Walker, those two players have to be comprehensive leaders.

Projection: 5th – WESTERN CONFERENCE (19-15)

I understand that we are all used to deep playoff runs. I do believe that the team will be in the playoff hunt throughout the season. What this comes down to is how Sacramento will fair head to head against a vulnerable Phoenix, Seattle and San Antonio. If the Monarchs can win at least 7 or 8 of 12 games against Phoenix, Seattle and San Antonio and play at least .500 against the rest of the West, THE MONARCHS WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. The best thing is expectations are low, based upon what everybody else has added and what Sacramento has lost. This is a season of not knowing what is going to happen this season, for the first time in years. But I do know that it is still going to be a great summer at Arco regardless.

GO MONARCHS, SEE YA'LL TOMORROW NIGHT!!!

Do you have any inside information about Newton starting? I'm of the same opinion as you -- Lawson should be the starter. Luckily for her and the Monarchs, Newton was relied upon to be the primary offensive threat on her Italian team last winter. Let's just hope she picked up some habits along the lines of "shoot first and ask questions later." However, Lawson should be the starter here.

Absolutely right about Powell -- now is the time for her to step it up, and to show some of the versatility she had in college, ranging from shooting guard to small forward. She's going to get thrown into the 4 spot a lot this year. Let's hope she has picked up the drop step move.

The Monarchs suffered in 2004 because they had no offense. In '05, they added Powell and bolstered the offense with Haynie and the Chinese players. I remember thinking to myself at the preseason game that year, "Holy cow, they've got an offense!" We all know the result of that season.

Last year was 2004 all over again. But this preseason (and open practice) have me repeating my '05 self, although slightly less admiringly. This year they seem to be working on actual offensive sets, and getting into an up-tempo game. The key here will be whether Ticha can meet this challenge. If she can push the ball and get things moving, I'm digging the offense.

Great preseason summary!

GO MONARCHS!!!

If this team all of a sudden abandons the deep bench approach and shortens the rotation to eight, I would be shocked the defense requires a deep bench and if they're going to run on offense too?

I agree, this season is very 2005-esque at the outset.

I think that sums it up... Great Analysis.

I believe that Kara Lawson needs to be the starter as well.
Allow her to get in the game and impact the game offensively. Bring Chelsea off the bench as the Defensive stopper.
However I lay that Defense first mindset on Whiz. To his credit it won him a championship. But Kara Lawson needs to be on the floor, as a starter. Imagine how effective Chelsea could be if she is laying defensive pressure on a winded DT or Cappie getting off to a slow start.

I also feel Like Ticha needs to put up offensively or Sit down. Since our offense is predicated on pushing the ball rather than dribbling the ball, that shouldn't be too hard for Kara/Aqua to handle. And we have plenty of speed on this team that should be an issue either. My Question regarding Coach Jenny is, will she have the gumption to pull Ticha if the situation necessitates it?

Which brings us to the all important Leadership/Go to roles. I have been saying this for awhile now, but it bears repeating.

NICOLE POWELL!!!
This is your time to shine.
Take your place along side Kara and Bekkah as an All-Star. We are a bit thin and young in the Post. I have hopes for Harper, but Losing DeMya this year is so much more devastating because we need that Go-To personality. Nicole has the Go-To talent, can she show the will to assert herself in Winning time situations. Demand the Ball and make Something good happen.

Defense/Offense

IMPO I think most of the Defensive Breakdowns were more a by-product of an anemic offense. There were times when we would get 3 stops in a row, only to come up empty on offense. That takes its toll on the defensive energy after a while.

I agree with the observation that the Wings actually held there own last year, but the post defense broke down too frequently. I thought we were a little soft in the post which is something I never thought I would say about a team Anchored By Yo Griffith. This year Adrian Williams is the Anchor.

Now In fairness... NOBODY can replace what Yolanda Did in the middle. And Adrian had "respectable" numbers per minutes played last year. But Her toughness Level was about at Level 2. That will have to improve along with her Butterfinger hands. She has to turn that slasher back. She has to be somewhat intimidating in the key, or block a few to get that respect or teams are gonna zero in on Bekkah.

So based on that, I also believe that we will finish 5th. However I think 1-6 will be alot closer than people realize. I think this will be one of the most competitive summers we have seen in a long time. Kind of Like in 04 in the East where Indiana finished Last and was 1 1/2 games out of first place.

I think our play-off chances drastically improve if:
1) We can maintain defensively and put 75 on the board consistently. Our offensive will make our defense that much better.
2) Bekkah and Kara play consistent and Nicole Ups her game to All-Star Status.
3) Another member of the back court. Sho, Ticha, Chelsea, Can bring 7-9 additional points, consistently every night.
4) We get a Rookie Surprise out of One/All of our rookies
5) The all important thing... Avoid the injury bug.

Well See how it plays out. Less that 24 hours til Tip-Off…

Lets Do it Ladies!!!!!

Franklin didn't have ANY competition for her back-up spot, and you guys want her to START against All-Stars, Olympians, and MVP candidates (Hammon, Bird, Pondexter, Pee Wee)????

GET REAL.

Who Said Anything about Starting???
If the reference was about Sitting Ticha? My Statement was if the situation necessitated it, could Jenny Sit Ticha.
That has nothing to do with starting Her. Maybe I should use the term pull her. But I thought that was kinda rude.

And Let's examine our Line Up. We have a bunch of Guards that can be on the floor. Kara Could Play Point with Sho/Chelsea/ Kim Smith and if we get real creative Even Nicole at the 2 guard. We don't have the size to do it, but it is possible to play a bunch of folks at the 2 guard.

And It doesn't matter if it is against Olympians or the Gym rats at Sac City. Cause those same Olympic players sat in Zones and doubled down on our post game last year. I'd rather have them guarding someone personally. We know what we need out of the back court, Hopefully Ticha can help us offensively. A little bit. Something. Most of us will settle for something.
I think I can speak for the Class when I say that 4 on 5 basketball will not do it.

She seems to have worked on her shot, but Practice and games are different. I hope it translates into confidence on the court I really do. But my biggest concern is that Jenny will force the issue, and not pull her when she would pull anyone else.

Now if it all plays out and we get that contribution then this whole line of discussion is moot. But the burden is on her to step up the consistency.

I agree that Kara should start. She should be the starting two guard. She should not, however, play point because this team needs her to score, score, score. It's hard enough for a 5'8 player in the WNBA to score because of all the tall guards in the league, but it's even harder for one who's below average athletically by WNBA standards to get off good looks. Shooting off the dribble is a weakness for her. She doesn't gain enough separation to get off a clean look, and that goes back to the lack of athleticism. She's a deadly set shooter, which suggests that she's a traditional two guard.

I disagree that she can play point with Newton, Scho, and Smith on the floor. She can't facilitate for them because they won't hit those shots. It's that simple. Thus, she'd have to be the go-to scorer if she's stuck with those wings. Again, that's hard to do in this league when you are 5'8 and not athletic.

I agree that we need to get good scoring out of the point guard spot, but let's not pretend that Franklin is the answer if Ticha's not scoring. She's only 5'3, and she shot less than 40% from the field in each of her four seasons at Texas A&M. The odds that defenses wouldn't sag off her are very, very small.

GET REAL.

Yeah, I agree. Nobody is saying Franklin should start. I said that from the jump, she should be the back-up point, SINK or SWIM. And Kara should exclusively be the starting two guard. But I don't think that is going to happen. Every game Newton has been a Monarch, she has started, and I don't see that changing.

Hmmm

I think we are fundamentally agreeing with one another.

However; I am confused where what I have said has lead to the conclusion that Franklin is an answer to PG woes?

Personally, I think Whiz has done a God-Awful job this past off-season. I thought there were servicable PG's out there that he could have signed after losing Haynie to expansion. I also thought there were very serviceable post players that could have helped our post situation. He Chose to roll the dice with our post game and Quite frankly He lost. Bekkah is our only Solid Post player and everyone else is marginal or Rookies.

So after basically Sitting on his hands during the Free Agent Signing Period, I am grateful that we managed to get a high energy player Like Aqua that late in the draft. In fact the only thing I think that was done worth a damn personnel wise was drafting. Especially given our Draft position.

With that being said... Aqua wasn't my first choice as a "point guard of the future". None were really out there in this particular draft. But Aqua is alright. Is she "Better" than Ticha? My guess would be No. For a full game. Probably not. But she may be better for given situations. As would Kara be better in given situations.

I just want to know that Jenny is willing to entertain another option if Ticha struggles. As she would with any other player. And I haven't got that sense from her yet.

There are alot of other things that have me concerned about this squad. Our youth, our post Depth, Chelsea and Sho nagging injuries coming into the season, just to name a few things. Ticha is not at the top of my list of concerns. But because there are so many unknowns, getting some stability out of her would be welcomed.

I think Aqua needs to get good amounts of PT.

the girl is a baller and really initiates our offense quickly. We really need to try to get easy buckets this year or else we just won't be able to score enough points.

I'd meant to post this before the first game, but more urgent matters required my attention: I have taken the liberty of compiling a list of career milestones which Monarchs players are expected to surpass this season. For brevity's sake, I only considered 100, 500, and subsequent multiples of five hundred to be sufficiently noteworthy milestones. Additionally, if said milestone establishes the player as one of few to reach the milestone, it will be noted below.

So, here is the list... the number currently held is in parentheses. All numbers are accurate as of 23 May 2008, TTBOMK:

Rebekkah Brunson: 1500 points (1083), 1000 rebounds (824), 100 blocks (79), 100 assists (76) -1,2
Kara Lawson: 1500 points (1433), 100 steals (98)
Chelsea Newton: 100 steals (91), 100 games (95)
Ticha Penicheiro: 2000 points (1941), 2000 assists (1869) -3
Nicole Powell: 1500 points (1294)
Scholanda Robinson: 500 points (367), 100 rebounds (84)
Kim Smith: 100 points (87)
Adrian Williams-Strong: 1000 rebounds (981) -1

1 - Adrian Williams-Strong and Rebekkah Brunson are two of seven players expected to surpass the 1000 rebound mark this season. There are currently thirty-five players in WNBA history who have already reached this milestone.
2- Rebekkah Brunson is one of nine players expected to surpass the 100 block mark this season. There are currently thirty-nine players in WNBA history who have already reached this milestone.
3 - Ticha Penicheiro is expected to become the first player in WNBA history to surpass the 2000 assist mark. She is also, by virtue of that statement, expected to become the only player in WNBA history to have reached 2000 points and 2000 assists. She is already one of only two players in WNBA history with at least 1000 points, 1000 rebounds and 1000 assists (Vicky Johnson).

I particularly like #3, Mr. S£im. Anyone who doesn't think Ticha is the best PG in the history of the WNBA should look again. Thanks for posting those.

The level of disrespect Ticha receives from fans of other teams is just downright pathetic. I don't care how many threes Sue Bird hits during the regular season or how many bail-out assists Becky Hammon gets. They will never be Ticha Penicheiro.

The understatement of the decade. Glad to see Ticha get the luv and respect she deserves. She is also #2 on the all-time steals list. The only one ahead of her is "Her Majesty" Sheryl Swoopes, and at last count, she is only 3 steals ahead of her. Well, that, and a whole extra year. :)

I hear ya, Den-Den. I have always loved Ticha and always appreciated that the Ms were fortunate enough to land her.

Mr. S£im, Sue Bird's selection over Ticha was more than a joke. It was insane.
