USA Player of the Year Trophy...

First of all I would like to add my Congrats to Candice Wiggins. She is growing on me. Still wish she was stronger but solid player. Funny thing was her family and Teammates seem to be more excited about this than she was. I like her approach.
Like I said the kid is growing on me.

For yor Viewing enjoyment...
Here is Mrs. Wiggins With the Trophy...

Candice had already put it in the Box and was moving on to other stuff. But Mama Angela Aka "Mama A. DUB" Wanted a Picture.

Here is Mama A-Dub with Candice and Melanie Murphy. Murphy just had surgery and is a week into rehab. That is good news. She said she is on schedule.

But... Where are the Big girls you may ask?
Because Mama B will attest to the Fact the Big Girls Rule.

Well Look No Further...

Here is the Real #14 Kayla "Da SupaStar Slaya" Pedersen.

Well somebody jumped in the picture.. don't know who that is.

Here is a better Shot.

Again Big Congrats to Wiggins.

A Link...

Oh My NBH...

There really is no online Link.
These photos are random shots from The "Mama A-Dub" Wiggins Collection. However I guess I can get somewhat organized and Put All of the Pictures In an online gallery For your Personal Viewing Enjoyment.

I'll Work on it.:p

Parker's Dunk against Kentucky

Here's some video of Parker's dunk against Kentucky....I'm *almost* more impressed with the moves she makes to catch the ball and make the move to the basket to throw down. (about 2-2:30 mins in)

This highlight video captures some of the rest of the Tennessee draft class as well as some nice defensive plays by Vicki Baugh. They were toying with the Wildcats like they were something to play with.

Point Guard Spotlight pt 1

Well, partly because we may be in the market now for a young point guard, and partly because I've had this file of stuff I've been collecting. Here is a spotlight of the top seniors available in the draft class.

Guard Zoll Gives A Clinic on Playing the Point
Zoll Follows Virginia Greats

When Zoll arrived on the Charlottesville campus of the University of the Virginia, she had her sight locked on legendary point guard Dawn Staley’s assist record. As a testament to her ability to accomplish what she set her mind to and the confidence to chase a legend, she is currently about 37 assists away from Dawn, and from becoming the all time career assist leader in ACC history. Good decision maker, ball handler, distributor and a relatively good defender. And in true throw-back, old school point guard fashion, she’ll score when you need her to but it’s not her first thought. She has a decent shot from the floor and from the perimeter and is solid from the free throw line.

Kimberly Beck 5’8” Senior – George Washington
Current Per Game Stats through 22games

George Washington’s Beck Is Woman Of the Moment

If you like your point guards fiery, and who head up a bad *** swarming defense. Here’s your gal. I’ll let you in on a secret to my scouting, if they can rebound? I’m sold. If they can shot block, I’m volunteering to pick them up at the airport, carry their bags and shuttle them to and from the practice facility. Beck can do both, along with acting like a floor general, distributing the ball and dropping in a few points now and then. Including daggers to knock teams out of the big dance. She finished third to winner Lindsay Harding and runner up Kristi Tolliver in the media voting for the Nancy Lieberman award given to the nation’s top point guard. Not bad company to have your name mentioned in the same breath with. She’s rail thin, but there’s plenty of time to bulk her up. Beck slightly trails LSU's Erica White in the national rankings for assist to turnover ratio. She’s likely to be the first pg off the board, so I’m trying to control my lust.

Point Guard Spotlight pt 2

Erica White 5’3” Senior – LSU

On the team that leads the nation in assist to turnover ratio, would it surprise you that its point guard is ranked in the top 3 in the country and tops in her conference in that ratio as well? Of course not, so let me go on…White is the leading senior in the nation, with stingy 2.90 ast/to and ranks behind a couple of players with gaudy numbers over 3. .White is small, but BAD A$$. When you have a small point guard who can rebound as well as Erica does, that tells you something. They are strong, aren’t afraid of a little contact and want the ball. She doesn’t score much, and I say that as if we haven’t gotten accustomed to it, but she’ll take it to the rack. She has pretty decent court vision and obviously finds her finishers (helps when you have an all American in the paint too) and speed. After a little tussle early in the season with a man known not have met many point guards he doesn’t have a critical word for, she’s been steady and productive in the Chancellor pro style system @ LSU. White took over the reigns of the LSU team after the departure of another diminutive point, Temeka Johnson, and LSU has simply continued its run of Final Four visits.

Aqua is another of the small point guards in this class with national statute, thanks in part to playing for a nationally ranked team in a highly competitive conference and on one of the leading defensive teams in the Big 12 and the country. While small in stature, Franklin plays big both offensively and defensively when the stakes are high. Speedy and steady as a point guard, she ranks 3rd in the Big 12 in assists per game. She also makes it known that she wants to take on the top defensive assignment as the head of a stingy Texas A&M defensive team.

Point Guard Spotlight pt 3

Tisdale is another one of the new generation point guards who mixes offensive firepower with an ability to also run an offense and get/keep her teammates involved and contributing. She is the last remaining player on the Baylor roster from their national championship winning 04-05 team. As one that designation would suggest, Tisdale is also Baylor’s only senior so she essentially in raising the next crop of Lady Bears for the top 10 nationally ranked team in Waco and in addition to leading the team in assists, she also is the team’s leading scorer and currently is closing in on the all-time career assist record @ Baylor. Interestingly, this has been a year of growth for her as she and her legendary Louisiana Tech point guard note that Tisdale’s game on the defensive side of the ball has grown exponentially. Tisdale attributes her offensive growth on her building her defensive skills and learning how defense fuels her offensive game. Coach Mulkey has praised her as becoming a very reliable defender and has become more and more comfortable being given the assignment to defend the opponent’s top perimeter threat.

I put a video clip in the links above, take a look at it because it epitomizes the toughness these small guards seem to all bring to the table. Besides, it’s funny as hell to me because I’d hate to have been the defensive player. Shannon Bobbitt is another small point guard who plays big. She is a JUCO transfer who helped lead the Lady Vols to their 7th national championship under coach Pat Summitt last year. Maybe, of all the point guards on this list, is the one most likely to be classified as “shoot first ask questions later” variety, but given her ability to shoot as evidenced by her shooting percentages? that’s not a bad thing. However, she also still manages to control the offense well in addition to being an option herself offensively. As is the case with most players in Summitt’s system, Bobbitt is a pretty decent defender and understands what is needed from her defensively in the overall scheme. She’s got the keys to the the nation’s number 1 team currently and one looking to repeat. That’s a load she’s shown already that she’s capable of handling.

Camille LeNoir has one more year of eligibility left at USC because she sat out last season with a hip injury. She's had some nicks this season but still has managed to only miss one start. Of all the point guards on this list, she's the one I've seen the least because she happened to have missed some minutes in the one TV game I've watched with USC as one of the teams. She's a decent shooter and ball handler, but she may stay another year and use that final year of eligibility. She's got a super freshman behind her who is supposed to be the NEXT BEST, but that freshman has torn the same ACL twice in two years so the next is on hold until 2009.

MBF, can you give me your analysis on Laura Harper, Maryland and Latoya Pringle, UNC. If you had to pick of the two, which one would you select. I usually do not watch Women's College Basketball until tourney time. But I want to keep my eyes on those two post players.

And if I had my choice of PG, Beck would be the one. I am not interested in a 5 foot point guard.:(

#45
Interesting... I was thinking about Beck myself. She has all the nice tools you want in a point. Plus she is a solid shooter. Makes plays and handles the ball fairly well.

And she is 5-8 as oppose to 5-3. I would prefer closer to 5-9 or 5-10 but hey skill is skill. She may not go in the first round So I hope we can warm up the trade bail to get her.

I thought Zoll was suppose to be the 1st pg on the draft board. But Beck is a winner imo.

I know you didn't ask me, but since Harper and Pringle were brought up...I thought I would weigh in. I am partical to Harper. For No reason in particular other than I am partical to her. But I don't think she will be available. Something tells me Pringle will be the #10 pick. She is long and athletic. And we like that in Monarch land. And I think Mo does a good job at Post development.

I saw someone i did like in Western Kentucky while channel surfing. Then looked this kid up. Crystal Kelly.
I know I should have kept up but I have been busy. Anyway
I hope she is a sleeper we can get. But her numbers are up there. She can score that is for damn sure and she looked pretty damn quick. And She makes Free throws. We can definately use that. I haven't check to see if her stock has risen per se. But I am hoping she manages to fly low. Or just low enough. Of course I only saw one game. But I liked her style.

Personally, I like Pringle (6'3" - North Carolina) more than Harper (6'4" Maryland) but both would fit here. Harper is (slightly) taller and has a bigger body, but Pringle is a longer, leaner, and more athletic shot blocking rebounder. A lot of the posts in this draft have similar qualities and most outside of the top 3(Parker, Fowles and Larkins) have some baggage. Just depends on what skills and need you want to fill and where you want your points to come from with them.

Here's are some others I like that also may be around at our pick...

Crystal Langhorne 6'2", Harper’s postmate is also an interesting idea – Langhorne has her critics, I think because she is 6’2” and spends a lot of time in the 5 spot but she’s responded by nearly breaking all of the records of Olympian and Yo’like throwback Vicky Bullet. You look at Langhorne’s numbers and she is equally as adept on the offensive glass as she is on the defensive glass...you just can't teach that. Her offensive rebounding prowess goes a long way towards explaining her high shooting percentage.

Tasha Humphrey 6'3" Georgia – Here's a player I hope slides down to us tho...When I first saw her play her freshman year two words came to mind "Tina" and "Thompson" except with a better post presence. She presents a much different look than any of the posts we have had since Tangela left, she has legitimate perimeter game. Probably next to Larkins, and certainly Parker, is the best passing post on the board. Passing posts are a premium in a motion offense scheme. Feeling is that her stock is dropping while Pringle’s is rising. Also learned some of her game from a friend of her mother's...Charles Barkley - she's a punisher in the paint.

The aforementioned Crystal Kelly 6'3" should be there in our pick range.

There is a wildcard out there, I haven’t tracked here because there is still some question re: whether or not she wants to come out this year, Angel McCoughtry 6’1” @ Louisville. If she comes out she could push Pringle or Harper closer to our pick. She’s in Humphrey’s category re: size - minus the outside shot but is another rebounder/paint scorer.

I'll bring the background stuff over for these and a couple of other posts later this month. I was working on some stuff for off-guards and hadn't gotten to the wings/posts yet.

Size for a point guard is almost immaterial, in this defensive scheme , if they have the ability to disrupt the opposing ball handler for 5-10 minutes a night from ¾ or mid court , and can rebound and can handle the ball, pass and score to me they fit a role. I'd go with one of the under 5'8"s with the idea that we get, again, a change of pace look off the bench. If the idea is that we'd go from Ticha to Kara to [insert name of pg here] and get speed and don't drop from an efficiency standpoint, I'm cool with that and other teams would have a hard time adjusting to that. That's three different looks from the pg spot.

Beck and Zoll may very well flip flop, but my feeling is that Beck will either win or serve as runner up again to Toliver for the Lieberman award, her team should go deeper in the tournament that Zoll's and she's the better scorer and more efficient floor general, and is the better defender. She's got a better pedigree right now.

With 18 points in Wisconsin's 81-51 win over Indiana last night, Jolene Anderson became the ALL-TIME leading scorer in Badger history. She broke the record of 2217 set by Alando Tucker in 2007. He took 134 games to set the (old) record- Jo took 118 to break it.

2222 points and counting...........

(Jo also set the Wisconsin girls HS scoring record with 2881 points, destroying the previous total of 2601. The owner of the broken record? Anna DeForge)

Continuing the thread trend...

While we're on a congratulations roll....

Congratulations to Virginia's Sharnee Zoll, with her 7 assists tonight, she surpasses Dawn Staley as the all time assist leader at Virginia and the ACC...

MBF--I'm liking Leilani Mitchell at Utah for the Monarchs. She is one of 9 point guards nominated for the Nancy Leiberman Award. Ranked #5 in the nation right now, but 2nd over-all in assists. Only possible negative is she is only 5'5", but a great defensive player. Great links to her over at www.womenshoopsblogspot.com

Check it out, and let us know what you're thinking about her now this late in the season...seems like she might be the kind of player Wiz looks for.

Thanks for the heads up Den-Den...I have only seen Wyoming and New Mexico out of the Mountain West this season, so I haven't see Mitchell at all. Now that the season is winding down and the conference tournaments are about to heat up I'll cross over the tv schedule here so that folks can take a look at some of the players playing positions the Ms may be looking for or folks think they should be looking for. There will be point guards to be had in the 3rd round (where the team has 3 picks)...because there are so many pure points and combo guards this year.

Anybody have thoughts on Mitchell?

March-April

For the final few days of the regular season, for the duration of the conference tournaments and the 64 team field of the NCAA tournament here's the game stat tracking post. I'll cross reference the TV schedule for games involving these players throughout the time they'll be playing the next 5 weeks or so here as well. Finally, I've tossed in a few players I haven't been tracking all season onto this list. Notably Mitchell and McCoughtry and some other additional C/Fs.

I want to revisit my position on Beck...

I got a chance to see her in 3 games, and was underwhelmed. 2 of which were in person.

She is definately disruptive on the defensive end. But her passes lack the zip necessary to move the ball around the horm IMO. Not to mention she has very slight if build. And is way too pass first minded. She did very little to show scoring ability in the tourney. I am sure she was a very good Leader for GW, but she was absent in the tourney.

Her stock has dropped for me. If Zoll is around I would lean towards her before Beck. However Her backcourt mate Sarah Jo Laurence her stock rose. If we need more wings I would definately consider her.

As for options at the point, Rego from San Diego kinda opened my eyes. And may be a 3rd round steal.

I'm with LUV13 on both Beck (serious lack of zip on passes), and on Rego possibly being a steal in the 3rd round. I only saw Rego for one game, where she made Ticha look like a scoring phenom, but she is definitely a floor general with great passing ability.

I also like both Erica White and Franklin (Texas A&M). I did not think at their size that I would be as impressed as I was, but both readily took it in the lane, shot over much taller opponents, played tenacious defense, and ran the floor. Any chance either will still be around in the third??? Dang it, we really need a 2nd round pick!

I did not get to see either Zoll (likely the 1st PG to go), or Leilani Mitchell (Utah). Several boards, however, let up with praise for Mitchell after her games. Anyone see her?

For the #10--please, please let Latoya Pringle still be around. Best fit in the bigs that I have seen for the Monarchs.

I love Erica White, her stock for me elevated the minute Van Chancellor landed in Baton Rogue...I could handle anybody else here who doesn't turn the ball over a lot.

Pringle may be undergoing a "Price-i-fication" I haven't looked at the draft order in a while but regardless, with the # of good posts in this draft there should be a run of them interrupted by Candice Wiggins, and maybe Hornbuckle and either Carson or Ajavon. If that doesn't happen I'll be surprised. I didn't think Holt or Kelly would go before Pringle did And between Harper and Langhorne, one of them is going before 10, I don't see them both being gone. Humphrey is somewhere in the mix too.

My wishlist is Pringle, Langhorne, Humphrey in that order. I'm feeling now that only Humphrey may still be around and that's a big "may" if more guards don't go in the first 8.

I saw a little of Beck as well in this tournament, and though it was my first time seeing her, I have cooled a little bit as well. The only benefit of the doubt I will give her is that she played a very tough defensive minded Rutgers team.

Having said that, I am shifting my attention to this young lady.....

Shannon Bobbitt 5’2” Senior - Tennessee

Now I am not down with the small point guards, but I am down with a point guard from New York City that can create their own shot, play with confidence, break down their defender and at least keep their player in front of them.

If Langhorne or Pringle is not at #10, I feel that the Monarchs should take the proverbial BPA (Best Player Available) regardless of the position. Bobbit may be that player.
