I agree. CHI is tempted (rightly so) to keep Deng due to the amount of money they'd drop next year, and the cohesion they feel that core has when Rose is in it. Something that might intrigue them, though, is Thompson or a combo of PPatt and Jimmer or IT with that expiring from Salmons. Even with Taj, Noah, and Boozer, the Bulls could use depth at the 4 or 5 and might like a nice, well-priced piece in Thompson, who adds more scoring than most of their options off the bench in those spots now. Another thing the Bulls could like is some salary relief (us spelling them against the gap by taking some on), although I don't realistically know how we'd do that while offering something they'd want. In reality, while I'd love to get Dorell Wright, I do think a team like CHI could really go for him due to what he could provide that lineup. Deng is a great player and possesses many weapons, but a quicker, longer FA player with more range might intrigue them.
My deal would be Salmons and JT for Deng. This gives CHI an 8M expiring after next year, although that shouldn't be much of a concern with them as they only have about 5 players signed after next season. JT provides them a well priced piece and they preserve the ability to spend freely. The Kings receive a strong, defensive-minded starting SF with ample experience, albeit for only a 1-year rental. I am not expecting CHI would be doing jumping jacks over the deal, but the reality is there is an inherent risk in any team trading too much for Deng as he is likely gone after 1 year, unless he goes to a contender or a team he covets. My preference would be to focus on a less glamorous but more realistic option, like Ariza, that could allow us to maintain an expiring but also an option to resign, perhaps, if desired.
UPDATE: One postscript to this deal- using TradeMachine, it does appear a deal with MT and either Jimmer or PPat (who IMO would be attractive to them for many of the reasons I outline above for JT) would work and save them about $4M and help them avoid the higher penalty this season under the new CBA. This would also preclude they do not resign Hamilton ($5m option), I'd presume, and thus take their total offseason savings about 10M or so, putting them only 4M over the cap instead of the 13-15M or so they are over it today. Something to think about.
