Can't wait to see George Maloof's response to this. Is he going to go the route of "We never wanted to leave" or the route of suing the league into letting him move to Anaheim?

NBA Commissioner David Stern weighs in on Sacramento situation with very interesting take. When asked if there's a scenario in which the team could still stay, & also asked whether the Board of Governors would support a move to Anaheim currently, he said, "If there was a vote now, there would be no support for a move. And I believe the ownership says they’re planning to stay there. On other situations, I might hazard a guess or a prognostication. On this one, I’m out of the business - for now."

Stern dismayed by Maloofs not taking NBA aid for new arena, but says its their choice to play in old venue and better for Sac than leaving.

Can't help but feel that this is a perfectly timed comment from Stern.

I have long held belief that he won't get the Maloofs get away with it but he won't get active about it publicly until after the play-offs. We are in the NBA finals and within a couple of weeks, things will start to happen slowly so Stern just puts out there a little comment to get the things rolling before he gets into it.

I hope I am not reading too much into this as I hope that come the start of next season, the team will have new owners.

Stern is never careless with comments about issues as big as this. He might slip a mispronounced name or some dry humor with his responses, but what he does say, is meant to have an effect. It's not like he hasn't been asked about the Kings situation before today. It's probably sent through channels to some reporters when the right time to ask the question.

He's careful to not step on the Maloofs rights, but he's definitely boxing them into a stay at Arco for an indefinite time. He really could have just repeated what he's said before, but now he's framed it in the NBA and other team owners position to not allow relocation. Next we'll see if the Maloofs have enough to take their fight to a court of law or will they just go ahead and sell and avoid expensive litigation.

And one more thing, timing. Big press conference before game 1 of the finals means a lot of national reporters and press. It means Stern cares about some public perception on the issue.

And this:

The issue in Sacramento, as it was in Seattle, is the lack of what the NBA considers an adequate arena. Stern said he believes the team will continue, for now, to play at aging Power Balance Pavilion after the Maloof family's ownership group balked at plans for a new arena.

''That's their prerogative. As long as it stands and passes the fire code, I think it's been a terrific place for the fans of Sacramento,'' Stern said, not exactly giving his seal of approval.

''I think if you ask the fans, they'd say it's better there than no place. I'll say it again: The fans of Sacramento, the businesses of Sacramento, the city of Sacramento have been great partners of the NBA.''

It definitely looks like Stern is sending the message that everything is falling on the Maloofs and he REALLY wants them to fully commit to Sacramento (which seems unlikely) or sell the team.

Agreed all the way down the line. David Stern just gave George Maloof the kind of rebuke you don't see often enough. The Maloofs played David Stern for a fool - and now they're finding that it was a very poor thing to do. By quoting their own words about them wanting to stay in Sacramento, they cannot turn around and ask for relocation. I loved his comment about "as long as it stands and passes fire code"...ROFLMAO!

Thank you, Mr. Stern.

Responses to what David Stern said earlier today about there being no support in a relocation of the Sacramento Kings.

"Sacramento may have the fifth pick in the draft, but we remain a top pick with the Commissioner. We appreciate his commitment to the best fans in the NBA." - Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson

Meanwhile the Maloofs had no response. Shocking, I know.

The stunt that the Maloofs pulled in NY pissed off Stern, and you could hear him trying not too show how much during an interview right after it happened. But more importantly, from what I have heard, that stunt also pissed off A LOT of the other owners as well. The result of that move will likely make life very difficult for the Maloofs for the forseeable future.

At this point, I'm thinking the list of people not pissed off at the Maloofs has to be the shorter list.

It was interesting to hear that the NBA would not support a move to Anaheim despite the Maloofs saying many other NBA owners told them the Sacramento arena deal was a bad one. If it was that bad you'd think they'd be in support of a relocation.

I always pretty much figured that the NBA Relocation committee and Stern wouldn't allow the Kings to leave Sacramento, because we did everything we needed to do to keep them here. It's good to know now that my beliefs were correct. Huge sigh of relief. Now it's just a matter of time 'til the Magoofs sell the team to someone who is fully committed to Sacramento, and wants to make this team successful in a new Sacramento Arena.

Called it.

Anaheim was always a pipe dream, even before the Magoofs shat on Sacramento, KJ, and Stern. Stern wasnt going to let the Kings take money from his precious Lakers franchise, or the up and coming Clippers.

Hopefully they sell before we lose too much of the youth movement.

This settles the "should we boycott games to send a message" debate, as per his comments Stern already knows what the magoofs are all about, instead of boycotting games we should show up in droves!........ but still not pay for parking or buy food of course.

Great great news! I know I don't live over there, but I have a strict connection with the city of Sacramento, so, just like you all, I want the Kings to stay in Sacramento.

Time to sell the team magoof, please...

Were they good owners before the housing crash? Yes, I'd say they were pretty good but everything was easier back then. They had tons of cash in the bank and they had other profitable businesses. Petrie made a series of great moves which built one of the most entertaining teams ever. That created huge fan interest not only in Sacramento but practically around the world. But they ended up making a bunch of bad business decisions which ended up destroying their wealth and putting them in the position they are in now. IMO, it wasn't a whole lot different than what the average Joe did when housing was appreciating like crazy. They pulled tons of equity out and blew it on stuff they didn't need or they got in over their head with a house/mortgage that they really couldn't afford. Now those people have lost their houses and most of their wealth. With the Maloofs, they gambled most of their assets on the Palms and lost.

They were bad owners not because they went broke. They went broke because they made bad decisions. Here in Sacramento, the Palms and their other failed business projects.

They sabotaged the Sacramento market by turning their backs on investing here and started dreaming of moving. They were bad owners because they meddled with a good coach and wanted him gone and replaced with a string of bad coaches. They let Arco Arena fall into disrepair. They let relationships with their partners (sponsers) dwindle.

They treated the city like it was the wife they wanted to dump for the hot chick. They never got the memo that they aren't the hot rich playboys any more.
