A's to Sacramento?

Bug Selig's statements that A's could leave Bay Area are not irrelevant 2 #Sacramento. @KJ_MayorJohnson and I spoke about baseball this week

Oh god don't tease me.

Seriously I love the kings but I would personally walk the maloofs out of town if we could get a baseball team. This area has always been a great baseball area. We could definitely support a baseball team.

I don't know about MLB because of the number of games in a season also I don't think the area cares much about baseball on the pro level at least. The NFL would be the best case scenario.

Hell no I'd rather keep the Kings. Just get Burkle.

btw RobMcAllister threw some cold water on this:

No offense to Mayor, but @Athletics do not have any desire to relocate to Sacramento. Not enough corporate sponsors for 81 games.

While fans would turn out for MLB, the Wolff family wants to go where there is large private $$. Sacramento does not have that.

Sacramento has always been, and still is a great baseball town. Going all the way back to the early Sacramento Salons. I'll bet you didn't know that Joe Dimaggio once played in sacramento. The weather in sactown is perfect for baseball. You can watch a game in the evening and not freeze your a$$ off. I think it would be great, as long as its not and either/or situation. I don't want to lose the Kings..

The lack of corporate sponsorship is what would likely keep this from happening, but I have little doubt Sacramento could and would support both the Kings and A's attendance wise. Despite the presence of the Kings, especially from 2000 to 2005, the AAA Rivercats have always drawn pretty well (around 10 - 13k I believe). Does anybody not believe they'd outdraw what the A's are getting in Oakland?

Not completely sure what McAllister is getting at here. What the Wolff family wants is to move to San Jose, but that's not happening. Sometimes it's not about what you want, but what you can get, and your best options. No matter what is suggested in Sacramento, someone always comes up with a reason why we can't. If Sac really wants a baseball team, then we could make the Wolff family think. It wouldn't be an automatic no as some suggest.

Selig will never come right out and say it, but San Jose is not going to get a green light for the A's as long as the Giants hold the territory. The Giants will never agree and no amount of money will change their mind. Wolff hasn't gotten the message yet. He may never.

Yeah. Do you think they would look at Sac seriously if they don't get San Jose(and it looks like they won't)? It'd be cool if we got the A's and kept the Kings, but if we got the A's and let the Kings go I think I'd kill myself out of heart break. I don't want the Kings to leave man.

Would they look? Maybe. But there is a lack of corporate money here. So I doubt it's serious. I think the city would draw at least 2 million fans a season. But running a team is not just about selling tickets.

I thought Raley field couldn't be expanded?
The only way you can get the city to toss in their 250 million is for the ballpark to be in the railyards. West Sac probably can't afford to expand Raley or build new. Expanding Raley would be about 250-300 million I'm guessing. With all the amenities in modern MLB parks, it's safer to even go above that. About the only thing of Raley that would be a keeper is about 2/3 of the lower deck. The entire press box, club seats, and everything else would have to be torn down. Even the seating area behind home plate would require a tear down and rebuild with the way modern facilities are done now.

REALLY???

Baseball is HUGE in the Sac Valley from when you are t-balling until the Rivercats! We could easily draw 25-30k a game at the pro level. It would give Reno a reason to visit Sac not to mention all the fans in the Sac area that don't like traveling to the Bay..

I am not even an A's fan (Dodger fan here!) but I would definitely get season tickets.

Only way building a baseball stadium makes sense is to make it duel purpose and get the Raiders too.

MOST. RIDICULOUS. COMMENT. EVER. Not sure if you are aware of this or not, but there happens to be a team called the Sacramento River Cats, who play for the PCL, which is a AAA league. Oh, and not to mention, they happen to be the AAA affiliate of the, wait for it, Oakland Athletics, a PROFESSIONAL (MLB) baseball team...And since the River Cats have consistently been one of the top AAA teams out there since they arrived, it must be because the city cares about its players, which would include caring about how they perform when playing on the Oakland Athletics, who happen to be a PROFESSIONAL baseball team (not sure if I mentioned this yet or not). Still think the area does not care about baseball at the professional level????????????

NFL being best case scenario??????? Umm, sorry to burst your bubble sweetheart, but what makes you think an area that is currently struggling to come up with a plan for an indoor arena with a capacity of approximately 16000 -17000 would be able to magically come up with a plan for a STADIUM with a capacity of like approximately 65000 (most probably more than that even)????? I am confused with your thinking...

The only reason baseball is being seriously considered is because we already have a BASEBALL stadium (minor league) and it probably won't be too difficult to renovate Raley Field and turn it into a MLB stadium. Football, however, is not going to happen; sorry to have burst your bubble, but that's just reality...

Whoa chill out bro, no reason to go off on him like that. Not everyone gets really pumped up for minor league baseball. Honestly if Sac gets the A's that's okay, but not if it's at the expense of the Kings. Not everyone is a huge baseball fan and it's not really fair to blow up at the guy for not knowing how much some people in Sac like the sport.

Umm, we already got Raley Field, which can be turned into a MLB ready stadium. We don't need a football team to make it work out...
Supposedly it would cost almost as much to renovate Raley Field as it would to build a new MLB stadium. I'd prefer they renovate Raley field though and leave the Railyards open for the new ESC.

Another reason I think Sacramento could support the Kings and an MLB franchise is because, with the exception of the Kings making a deep playoff run, the seasons barely overlap at all.

Assuming a stadium could be built, the lack of corporate suport is really the only obstacle preventing a team like the A's from wanting to come here. Everyone knows the fan support is here.

I'd like to see a study on what kind of corporate support is needed for pro sports and what we have. The Kings are not a good example of what can be made because they have proven to be consistently bad at generating any corporate support. I understand we lack corporate 500 companies. But is that the sole key? The A's are in the middle of the Bay Area and are not generating the revenue the Giants are. The Giants dominate because they have the higher fan support (even when the A's are winning). Companies know this, which is why more money goes to the Giants. The A's were hoping to separate themselves by going to San Jose. It's not the corporations the A's were going after, because moving 20 miles closer wasn't going to influence the corporations any more. It was the money in the pockets of the potential fans. This makes me believe it's fans and their disposable income that is the more important driver. The fans draw in the corporations.

We're 85 miles away from SF. Share the same radio waves. Overlapping TV markets. The A's could keep their already established fan base from the bay because we're so close. I don't see it as a big step backwards for the A's to move a few miles down I-80. It may not be as beneficial as moving to San Jose, but it's better than being the step children to the Giants and continuing to flounder in garbage ball park.
