What would you do?

When Wolfe says he wants to move the A's to Sacramento and I'm sure he's not using us as leverage, then I'll say the Maloofs haven't hurt us as a market. I still believe the Maloofs are attempting to intentionally hurt Sac in as many ways as they can on their way out.

How many teams does the MLS have at this point? Around 20? I'm not sure that we would come into play until there are closer to 30 teams for the very reason you mentioned. Wanting to touch every geographical area. How far in the future would that be? In addition, if the MLS could get multiple teams in large markets, it might be preferable for them.

For those interested, I found the post saying Sac could support more than one major sport, but not baseball. The reason baseball was not supported was based on personal income in the region and the fact that the A's and Giants play down the road. If the A's leave, that aspect of it goes away and since the article, the Sacramento region had surpassed minimum personal income required to have a baseball team. So it's a go in my book.

"The Sacramento area could accommodate another professional sports team, with the National Football League or Major League Soccer the most likely to score with fans and investors, according to a biz*journals survey of 82 markets in North America."

http://www.bizjournals.com/sacramento/stories/2009/12/21/story10.html

"Sacramento region residents earned $86.94 billion last year, which put it at No. 25 among the nation’s metropolitan areas."

I don't think residents income is the issue. Lack of much of a corporate base is still an issue in this government town.

I guess I've really become jaded. I see the Maloofs attempting to leave Sacramento with a scorched earth attitude. If they can't succeed here, I don't see them being gracious or even civil.
I agree with that, but they really can't do anything but destroy the NBA and an arena deal. A stadium is another beast entirely.

MLS would be great, is definitely a growing sport with a growing fanbase and actually teams averaged more fans per game last year than NBA teams. But imo only to compliment the Kings, not replace them.

The next expansion MLS team will be in NY and will be the 20 team with a 100M buy in fee just to enter the league. That plus a stadium isn't cheap. San Jose's new stadium which should open sometime next year will seat almost 18K and that's slightly below the league average for fans, so it couldn't be a small stadium either.

While this is true, I must point out I took my son to see the Kings play the Blazers this year and our two tickets (lower bowl) were over half the price of one of my Timbers season tickets.

The NY deal hasn't been settled. I think they should just do it as the Red Bull branding of the current team is a joke. But there is also serious talks of Florida, imho the only way to make that work is to put 4 teams in the SE all at once and hope for Cascadia all over again. Not likely. A Sac-San Jose derby would be fantastic though.

If the question is would I, a lifelong basketball fan, become a fan of a different sport if Kings left, my answer is a resounding "hell, no." To me, it's no better than telling the kid who had a pony, loved the pony and then lost the pony, that a little red wagon is just as good.

Depends on why you lost the pony. I lose love for things that intentionally abuse me.

Bug Selig's statements that A's could leave Bay Area are not irrelevant 2 #Sacramento. @KJ_MayorJohnson and I spoke about baseball this week

In the case of the Kings and ownership, how do you support one without involuntarily supporting the other? This is hard to reconcile in my mind. With success on the court, comes success to the Maloofs. Same goes with failure. The Maloofs have no intentions of sharing any of their success with the city of Sacramento, so I lose some emotional attachment. I don't want to players or the team to fail, but I find it hard to ignore the connection.

I've been a fan of the Kings since 1985. That's not gonna stop because their current owners are bozos. I can understand how you might lose some emotional attachment but for me it's not a choice. The Kings are a part of who I am - a family tradition that spans four generations.
