Don't Make Me Use The Bat
#1
Critical turning point early in this one: we were on our way to a big first quarter, having fun, passing the ball. DeMarcus, who was off to a pretty good start, gets out on the break and tries to have TOO much fun, attempting a behind the back pass, in traffic, and turning it over and blowing what should have been a sure 2pts for us. Okay. Dumb. But young dumb. We're having fun dumb.

At that point I think Smart made a mistake. And with DeMarcus at least he's normally had the right answer. But here he immediately sent Chuck Hayes to the scorer's table to sub in fron DeMarcus, even though it was only mid quarter and Boogie and we as a team were playing well. In other words purely a punishment type move, like that time that Westphal pulled Donte for the extra flair on a dunk. Thing is, DeMarcus did not like it at ALL. He saw the Hayes move coming, and so he promptly committed a **** you foul for Smart's benefit. And right there we lost him for the entire game. He was unhappy/pouty down at the end of the bench. He came back in, still looked out of sorts, got the third foul, went back to the bench. Came out in the third just lax and sloppy. And basically he just quit. Not so much on the team as on Smart. Smart had showed him up, and he wasn't happy and wasn't going to play for him tonight. That's what I saw at least. And I strongly suspect it being the 2nd night of a back to back only made it that much easier for DeMarcus to mail it in. And bereft of our dominant big man, and once again turning one of the two worst offensive teams in the league (other = Charlotte) into a 100+ ppg 55% shooting powerhouse, we blew what should have been a win for us.

Theme = well, guess we'll call it Cover Songs I Like. Did a "Bad Cover Songs" theme a couple of months ago and had in mind its counterpart "Good Cover Songs". Except in music what is "good music"? I think there is more universaility in recognizing bad versions of things where the artists just failed. But "good" often comes down to tastes in music as much as anything esle. So without annointing these unviersal "goods", even though I think they are all popular/generally more appreciated than not, I am instead just going to call this Cover Songs I Like...and maybe you will too.

Boxscore

Evans ( A- ) -- on what can kindly be called "off nights" for Cuz and IT, we got games out of the other three starters to keep us semi-in this one (as well as one bench guy, TWill), and none was any better than Reke. Got off to a good start hitting an improbable long jumper against the clock with a hand in his face, then throwing a full court baseball pass to a streaking Thornton. Was doing a beautiful job passing in the early going and had something approaching half of our first half assists. And note too, racked up 8 assits and ZERO turnovers, which is a pretty decent ratio. Started the third strong again with a jumper, a steal, and a pair of Fts. But forced a bad long jumper after a sequence of selfish shots by virtually everybody on the team, then got called for a clear path foul trying to get back in transtion. Left the game soon therafter and was replaced by TWill, but the lead swelled while he ws out and it was not until he returned to create that effective TWill/Reke duo we've been seeing that we made a push to get back into it. Really began sizing up the Hornets in the late 4th after he took over at PG. Set up JT, knocked down a jumper, got a drive -- was kind of that way all night as he was contributing in all areas (including playing active defense all night). But with us having gotten the lead back to four and 3 minutes to go, briefly got infected with that recurring case of the heroes and got too one on oney as he tried to punch us into the lead. As is normally the case with that disease, it had the opposite effect.
Ring of Fire - Social D -- one of the all time great covers in my mind, walking that fine line of the band making the song its own, moving it into a new genre, and yet still staying true to Johnny Cash's original. Only thing I miss are the mariachi horns.

Thompson ( B ) -- there was a good and a bad to this one for Jason. The good was that he came up with 18pts on 8-12 shooting to help the offense. The bad was that his opponent (Jason Smith), who should NOT be doing such things, came with 22pts on 10-12 shooting to hurt the defense. A lot of that hurt came early as Jason, with a little non-help from his friends on defense, got torched by Smith in the early going, letting him get whatever shot he wanted. Came alive himself on the defensive glas, and started pushing the ball on the break himself rather than giving it to guards. Amazingly that worked out for him, and on maybe our best play of the night he kicked the ball ahead to Thornton, then kept running the floor and took the touch pass back for a dunk. Scattered in some tough post moves throughout the game. Came up with a big offensive rebound at the 3:00 to give us an extra possession, but led nowhere. Led the team in rebounding, but wasn't special on the boards and without Cuz we got crunched one more time there. Have to cap this grade to reflect the defense on Smith, or lack thereof.
With A Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker -- of course Joe Cocker is famous for his covers, and this is one of those songs where more than just covering it, his version (which he first sung at Woodstock 40 years ago) may have gone on to eclipse the Beatles original to become the defining version.

Cousins ( F ) -- see my introductory writeup for what I think happened here. The rest of the details are comparatively unimportant. Started the game showing the quick hands again, and if nothing else Demarcus has now notched 10 steals in the last two games, which is one of those numbers that may truly not have been seen out of a center since Olajuwon. Then came the ridiculous behind the bakc pass attemtp, and that defeined the rest of the game. Was just forcing and getting nothing accomplished, and the lack of fiocus was just pulsing out of in waves. Started the third with a bad pass turnover. Started making selfish decision in the third just charging inside and throwing up junk. Then just started settling for long missed jumpers that he jsut kind of threw up there, but never did seem to bear down and concentrate as if this one mattered to him. Once again an example of somehing I have been talking about all year with Boogie -- despite the huge strides, a major point of continuing immaturity is his inability to play through/fight through adversity. I don't even know if that's immaturity per se, since my dad was teaching me those tough guy/never give in lessons in grade school. But its a definite trait that needs improving, and its one that as guys get older and become professionals and take pride in that label, and in themselves, that they get past. With all of Boogie's talent, learnign to play through fatigue/bad calls/pssing matches with coaches/whatever may be the only thing standing between him and just tearing up the league next year.
The Metro - Alkaline Trio -- System of A Down also tried covering this old Berlin song, but I thought theirs committed the sin of trashing the original. This version though just takes the original synthicized new wave and gives it a kick in the butt while still maintaining the integrity of the song.

Thornton ( A- ) -- after some previous struggles, came back home and finally got that strong performance before family and friends that he has been looking for. Really energetic out on the break in the early going, and blew up for 13 first quarter points. but was also doing a ncie job of being unselfish vis a vis JT in particualr, and delivered a beautiful touch pass back to JT for the dunk after JT had led the break and found Marcus. Hit a three inside the 2:00 mark to make the lead 5, and had a chacne to play the big here when Reke got it to him for a challenged one next time down the floor, but he missed it, and we got no closer. On the other end of the court it should be noted that we got beat essentiall by Jason Smith, Marco Bellinelli, Graevis Vasquez, and Xavier Henry. If you're a casual fan and just said WHO? you are not alone I am sure. But my point here is that the last three of those names were often matched up on Marcus.
Wish You Were Here - Rasputina -- I have never been a fan of Pink Floyd -- probably from having been forced to watch the frickin' The Wall movie at least half a dozen times in my school years and growing sick of it. I have also never been much of a fan of Rasputina -- one of those bands I have tried to like, but just can't. But now put them together and add in one awesomely moody cello, and I think you've got a great cover.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Thomas ( D ) -- this was IT's worst game in a good while, and it was kind of a strange thing. Strange in his ineffective play. Strange in Smart's use, or rather non-use, of him. Just strange. Had more lowlights thahn highlights. Tried to wade in there in the early going for an offensive board on the break, only to have some big cave man looking dude step over and rip the ball right out of his hands. Airballed a corner three off a nice spinning dish from Reke. Forced another bad three as we as a team got selfish. In an odd development, well odd given that this is IT who Smart has seemed to treat rather differently than everybody else, fell victim to Smart's random sub patterns, and after playing the first 8 minutes of the game never returned for the rest of the half. Some sefish play in the early third, but also starting creating a little better. On his best play of the night, after forcing a shot on the break poked a steal away from behind and threw a bullet to JT at the rim for a foul. Ended up sitting out the 4th, not so much for Jimmer who was hardly more effective, as for Reke and TWill, who were better at both ends tonight.
Have You Ever Seen The Rain - Joan Jett -- in general I would consider John Fogerty's voice nearly uncoverable for a male singer, but spin it around it aroudn and make it a raspy voiced female rocker and this is about as good a cover of a CCR song as you are going to find.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bench

Hayes ( C- ) -- well, he played good defense on Landry, who is about as natural a fit for a matchup as you are going to find. Otherwise...ineffective again. Not on the boards, turned the ball over several times, and only notched another 2pts 3rebs in 21min. Did make one good pass in there to a cutting...Thornton I think it was, but its just sad that that is all that it takes anymore for me to go, oh, about normal, C-. Obviously not enough to replace Boogie when he checked out.
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm -- a love it or hate it cover of a Michael Jackson song that blew up a decade ago for one hit wonder Alien Ant Farm. I thought it was fun myself.

Fredette ( C- ) -- came in with the right attitude, not forcing his own shots, and instead setting up the other guys who were already hot when he came in. Problem was, he was never really able to step it up even after the other guys had gone to the bench. Stripped on the break for a turnover. First shot was a deep three that lpooked forced, but was part of the offense apparently. Missed all his first half shots and you were just waiting for IT to be resummoned, but for some reason that call was not made, and Jimmer closed the half with a little kick making it look like a wise decision. Closed his minutes with a nice pass to JT blasting it past several Hornets and then hit a three to get the 2 for 1 wtih 20 seconds to go. Second half stint was just falt ineffective. Was having problems bringing the ball up in the early 4th, kept on fouling guys trying ineffectually to defend the break. Flinched on a three in the early 4th and airballed it. Eventually we went to a Reke/MT/Twill look to close things that btw potentially has my interest for a lineup for next season.
Imagine - Avril Lavigne -- you describe the idea of Avril covering John Lennon's classic song of peace, and it sounds like disaster. But then the last thing you would ever expect happens, and she sticks it with a delicate touching cover. You just never know.

Greene ( C+ ) -- got quite a few minutes, and really concentrated on defense during his stints. The good of that was he came up with a couple of good help blocks as our only impediment inside. The bad was that when JT wasn't guarding him, Donte was the other guy normally on Smith as he shot 10-12. Hit a three from TWill in the 4th for his moment of offense. Not a bad outing and did not hurtus in any way shot 1-2, no turnovers, just a non-impact outing on a night we were basically one extra impact guy short.
I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston -- too obvious and a softball pitch after recent events, but of course like Cocker's With A Little Help From My Friends, this amazing cover of a Dolly Parton song not only became the defining version of the song, but also became perhaps Whitney's most famous hit before she destroyed herself with drugs.

Williams ( B+ ) -- actually played a relatively ineffective first half, just subbing in for Reke and not having much of an inpact in limited minutes. But late in the game he surged as he has often done for us since arriving, and combined with Reke and MT to almost let us sneak away with this. Hit a three late in the third that we really needed as the Hornets were starting to break away. Used his hops to score on a tough turnaround jumper in the early 4th, then drained another three from Reke as the two of them once again combined for excellent atheltic play. Started to thow up rather too many heat checky shots though as the quarter went along, although still found Donte in the corner for a three. Kind of faded back a bit once MT was back alongside Reke, and the two of them tried to close, but we lacked composure as usual. Was the 4th of our 4 guys who really showed tonight.
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - Joan Jett -- yeah, used a second Jett cover, but this one was just such a ballsy rendition of the AC/DC original that I prefer it to the original.

Whiteside ( INC ) -- came in for Cousins in the mid 2nd and immediaely stopped a drive with his length, and then went down the other way and got an offensive rebound. But then suffered a bad ankle sprain after only a couple of minutes of action and had to be carried off the floor. We'll have to see, but this close tot eh end fo the seaon that sort of thing might have ended his season jsut as he was starting to get semi-consistent minutes.
Come on Eileen - Save Ferris -- my somewhat shaky relationship with this cover is really mostly about my esteem for the original 80s pop hit, which I really don't think you can make more fun than it already is. Skaing it up is kind of like deep frying a twinkie.

Everyone should watch the Portland Warriors game on espn and observe how much better Hickson is now that he doesn't play for the Kings. Crap game tonight by us though.

ah thanks for clarifying. didn't start watching until the fourth and was wondering why dmc was riding the bench down the stretch with only 3 fouls.

on the bright side, jason thompson has been playing very well the last 3 games. playing like a guy who could make meaningful contributions to a playoff team.

At what point does the team quit, are they in the process of quiting, or have a few already dialed it back some?

I mean, 6 losses in a row, 11 of 13, and OKC, Por, SA and OKC next up. We can easily hit a 10 game losing streak and 15 of 17. I see frustration on the faces of our guys in huddles and timeouts, and while some is obviously us losing, some also appears to be more of "what the hell are we doing?" This was a huge loss, as not only was it against the worst team in the west without Gordon, but was the only real winnable game for the enxt week, after dropping 5 in a row.

Also don't get benching Cuz for a mistake while ignoring the defensive mistakes, and quite frequent of Jimmer and MT. Great way to lose the guy whose coat tales you're riding.

i voted 1-6 but thats wishful thinking..... this team is a mess everywhere from ownership, management, coaching and players. Our roster is an atrocity to team basketball and that falls squarely on Petrie and owners. Our players aren't pro's, you make them pro's by surrounding them with some nba vets that can go (not Chuck Hayes). What i hate is that we see teams that were cellar dwellers make strides(Houston, T Wolves, Suns etc), yet we continue to be an embarassment, we don't deserve to win the lottery.

I think Smart did the right thing. Demarcus turned the ball over on a play where we easily could've had two points. You cant just accept crappy play and roll with it. Demarcus needs someone to ***** slap him, so maybe he'll wake the heck up. If he doesnt change his attitude he will be out of the league in a few years.

DeMarcus can be a bit immature, but he is 21 years old. He is the most talented offensive center in the league. As he gets older, he will stop with this stupid stuff whether the coach yanks him or not. If you are the coach, you wait until the game is over and talk to him one on one. You don't yank him in front of an arena full of fans. That just causes resentment and will cause him to check out.

Valid points. I agree, Smart could've handled that a lot better. But I dont think he should be the one being blamed here. Just my two cents!

Smart was wrong. Sure, Cuz made a silly mistake but you could see that he knew it and I'm betting he would have played well the rest of the game just to prove it. He saw Smart immediately call for Hayes, however, and as Brick has said, he pretty much checked out at that point. The team was playing well; they could have survived that one little mistake. Hell, if you were a Kings fan back when Jason Williams was playing for the Kings you not only accepted those occasional lapses, you actually looked forward to them. Always fun to see if a behind-the-back pass from JWill was gonna hit his intended receiver or some lady in the 4th row.

Smart needs to get the blame. He could have mentioned something to Demarcus at the next whistle.

I didn't get to see the game but I'm curious, what did Grant and Jerry say about what happened? Or did Coach Smart address it after the game?

Grant/Jerry were too busy gushing about something else. I tend to tune them out a lot more recently so I don't recall what it was. I don't listen to Smart after the game. It tends to make me want to throw things at my TV. Hopefully someone else can answer your question.

EDIT: The game is being rebroadcast on DishNetwork 409 starting at midnight. You'd only have to watch the first few minutes to see what happened.

Orrrr maybe cuz did a good thing by getting the Lin? IMO, we're not going to grow much more with the current players; cuz doesn't care, if there is no playoff hope. maybe he didn't make a mistake in his mind. If it were a diff player trying that I'd mind, but he is clearly our best player by far, and that's not good cuz he's a second year center!

Yeah, um...no. Players don't think about lins, and quite frankly, I wish that term would just go away. Players want to play. What Cousins did was showboat - if he'd been successful it would have been the top highlight of the night. It ended up being a turnover, though, and Smart over-reacted. Cousins knew he'd made a mistake - you could see it on his face - but I firmly believe he would have not made another mistake the whole night.

Yes, the Westphal technique. Wonderful. Change a future all star into someone playing in the Chinese league. That'll show him for acting like a kid. And how does that do us any good? He's the only truly great player we have and you act like he has been a problem all year and needs to be ***** slapped. How's that work on the bitches you've slapped?
