I respectfully disagree. They explored/are exploring an option that could feasibly be more lucrative for themselves and their business. This has been a long time coming, it's not like we were blindsided by this. I don’t think they should apologize for looking to greener pastures; any good business owner would do the same. What they should apologize for are the horrendous head coaches they have been hiring the last couple of years... and the crappy food at Arco.
Then why doesn't every NBA team leave every small market and put themselves in the largest TV markets 1-15 with multiple teams in multiple areas?
Answer; because rural America markets are just as important to ratings, and advertising. When I lived in Reno/Carson City we had the Kings shoved down our throats there too. It was in the late 90s and all the games that played on CW31 were played on the Reno Affiliate, as well as the Chico affiliate, Yuba City, Marysville, Redding, ect ect... They are not technically in our market but they were still force fed the Kings brand of basketball. It's much more than just being in a large centralized population.
The Lakers have a TON of support in Norcal that even rivals that of Kings, and Warriors fans. How do you think the Kings would fare in Socal w/o the Norcal support? They would only be about a 1/10, if not less, of what the Lakers are, and the advertisers will have a field day with the Maloofs if they try to compare the Lakers or even the Clippers TV deals.
Maloofs are in a great market up here which reaches into more Rural areas than the Lakers, and even goes into Nevada.. If they lose our support they will get killed in Socal. They never even had to try to get into a diluted market when they have the whole of Norcal, and Western Nevada all to themselves. Not to mention the support for the Kings in Las Vegas.
In LA they will be "just another crappy team" where the fans wont show up and the TV deals will be probably less than what they could get in this market since every other LA team is much much better. Not to mention you are trying to force another team into LA when the fair weather fans are all jumping on the Blake Griffin hype.
So you have the Lakers competing for a championship which is a negative to any other LA team, and you have Blake Griffin lighting up the dunk reels which is another negative. The Kings will not succeed in LA..
What I see happening is the Maloofs try it out for 2-4 years and with the Lakers, and Clippers hogging 90% of the fans in LA the Kings average a leagues worst in attendance, and the Maloofs sell the team. The Kings being tired of playing in a hockey arena which was not really meant for basketball (frozen floor issues when hockey is not being played) will move the team to Seattle, or Louisville.
