What can we do?

I know there are several threads going on. I want this one limited to action and that's my only justification for this note. I also left another note elsewhere that left people speechless about why this is the city's problem and not the area's. What help can the Board of Supervisors contribute?

I wrote an email to Johnson. I will not sit back and simply kvetch with my friends here. Post suggestions as I don't know what we can do other than be noisy.

Mr. Mayor,

There are many of us in and out of the city of Sacramento that need some direction about what can help with the arena/Kings situation. I am frustrated as I live across the street from Sacramento and have no say as far as the City Council goes. I have been a fan since 1985 and have been a season ticket holder.

Anyway, what can I do? What can a bunch of rabid fans do? Our identity as a city and an area will drop further than it is. I get it!

BTW, who has the better jump shot, Obama or you.

Glenn

Even if what you do is copy my note, do it and send it. Ideas, please. Mods move this if you wish.

Basically told him that if they got an arena after the fact that the Kings left then I would avoid that new arena like the plague. It would be like a kick in the face that they get an arena deal done right after the Kings leave.. That's just stupid.

At this point...nothing really. I believe the city of Sac and among others had their chances and I think at this point it's pretty obvious that its just not meant to be. The sooner people can start letting go, they better they will be off.

Can't you at least wait until they back up the truck to move out the rims?

Listen, I want them to stay, I really do. But there isn't much we as fans can do at this point, IMO. You have to eventually come to realization that the inevitable will happen and to enjoy what you have while you still can.

That may be true for someone in Phoenix or, for that matter, in Denver or Baja or New England, but for me in Sacramento CA it's not. And believe me I don't want to turn off any potential help from anywhere including Phoenix. I want the arena replaced because I want the Kings here. Talking about it like it a fait accompli is not appropriate at this time. The issue isn't dead in Sacramento even though the Kings presence is in jeopardy.

Please, think of something we can do. It's only February 21, 2011. Also, something to think about, the Kings are going to open the season in late October at Arco. So let's not say goodbye yet.

Well I'm sure it's much easier for those living outside of the Sacramento area to let go, obviously. I know fellow citizens and fans of Sacramento want to keep their team because that's the only sports franchise they have in that town, but I guess if you want to hold on hope I mean who am I to criticize you for keeping your faith and hope to keep em in Sac. At this point, I don't even know if they will be playing in Arco come next October.

I don't think they are leaving this year because there is a study pending and because there might not even be a season next year so there is plenty of time for things to change. Maybe giving up is the easy way. It takes the least effort, that's for sure.

Does anyone know why the repsonsibility for "keeping the kings here/building an arena" is on the shoulders of the city of Sacramento and not the entire area? Is there some legality that says a person in Carmichael has to stay in the background? Is there a reason the Board of Supervisors has nothing to say? I don't mean any flippancy and I hope the answers aren't flippant.

It sure isn't Kevin Johnson's job to find a solution.

For instance, why can't an arena be built outside the city limits of Sacramento? It seems to be an accepted fact that the arena has to be built in Sacramento. Maybe the more affluent areas outside of the city might want it. Apparently I am missing something. Just because Luckinbill built the first building in Sacramento doesn't mean every plan has to include the idea that it be built in Sacramento.

If the Maloofs can move to Anaheim (yes, I know they have an arena, etc.) why can't they move to Fair Oaks or Elk Grove? Anywhere nearby. Maybe another local area would be able to contribute some funds. Just thinking .....................

You read my mind, Glenn. I was just wondering what effect the potential lockout might have. Lets say the Kings have a certain amount of bills each season, and they have been taking in less than it takes to pay those bills. Would the lockout help the Maloofs in that they wouldn't have that "in the red" balance for a year and could give us one more year to try to work it out? Or would enough of the bills still be there that bringing in NO income from basketball would add even more debt so that a move with a possible loan might look good to them? Anyone know how a lockout would effect their bottom line?

It's not cool to speculate.

great points glenn.

have they looked into building it in neighboring areas? it would be awesome if the arena was located in elk grove. i wouldn't have to drive so far to catch a game :)

Q and R actually involved the city and county, it was just poorly conceived.

The biggest problem is the city rarely annexed contiguous areas as they built up. Geographically, the "city" is pretty small. There have been attempts to reach out to surrounding counties, but everyone wants to know what's in it for their city or county, if they help with funding. It would have been useful, perhaps, to create a sports authority that could have included multiple jurisdictions under one legal entity. Not sure it would work here, although its happened in other states.

Any single jurisdiction would have the problem of trying to help finance an arena. Not to mention that if any other jurisdiction was interested, they could've jumped in with a proposal any time over the last 14 years.

I resurrected this thread. I see we have two Facebook pages with 2500 likes, a Feb 28 sellout, Carmichael Dave had good things to say, at least one person wrote to the city council, and about three people are writing to KJ. Mostly its a lot of chatter among ourseves. Are we sincerely trying our just trying to point fingers of blame while we do nothing? I don't think any thing is a done deal. It may be teetering. We could make a difference yet we aren't doing much. In a sense, being quiet says a lot to the city and the Maloofs.

Good grief, tweet Barklely and Kenny (ex King) Smith. Who knows what Chucky will say but good or bad, it's good as far as I'm concerned.

I have asked for input on an idea I had and no one bothered except kennadog who seems to work her *** off. Tell me no. I don't care. Tell me something.

I am REALLLY disouraged. There's a lot of brain power here that can organize more. It takes the masses to get through the thick skulls of the interested parties. KJ's feelings were hurt and frankly I think he screwed us. Write to him. Get an apology. I know he's human.

Glenn - I have sent emails and bought tickets to Monday's game. I would probably be at any rally, etc., that would be organized (unless I had an unavoidable work comitment, etc.). But I have no knowledge of one being planned or organized. Others would probably have a much better idea than I about the timing or location of such a thing. At the City council offices before the next city council meeting? At ARCO before the game? At ARCO some other time? I have no idea what would be best or what could draw participants.

OK, up my estimates in a few categories by one. Let's get more.

#1 People on this forum write to each council member, Board of Supervisors, and the mayor. Who else locally?

#2 Find people on Facebook who are announcers and the like and write messages. Do I have that correctly?

#3 Twitter. Get a list of addresses of people who can make a difference. Who will do it?

#4 The Maloofs need to know what we are doing. It'll make them feel good and as some one said, they are an emotional group of people. As I think this deal hangs on a thread and could go either way, our input and others might make a difference at least to buy an extra year.
