Reke vs Boogie - Control of the Team is Brewing

#1
I went to my first two games this season vs Dallas and OKC. Two things that really jumped out at me:

1. Patience is wearing thin with Tyreke Evans with the public. Some of the things I heard in the stands during game time was evident that Reke seems to be losing support. Kind of brought me back to the end of the Chris Webber days.

2. The interactive chemistry between the team's two best players is non-existant at best. During pre-game introductions, the vibe between Cousins and Evans is icey compared to the interaction between those two and others. And the communication on the floor.....well, it badly needs work.

This team is not good enough to have a Shaq v Kobe melo drama. But this last incident with Cousins kind of confirms my feelings that all is not right with the future of this team. Don't get me wrong there is time to fix it, but I have little confidence in Westphal, "some" confidence in Petrie and zero confidence in the Maloofs to help this relationship.

Some on this board have accused Evans of selfish play. I don't think he is selfish as he is confused. Right now mentally Evans is both a point guard and a "2" guard and has not quite yet learned when to pass and when to shoot. The organization and the players support Evans. But it seems like Cousins is having none of that and has lost patience with Evans. Somebody has to fix this before it is irreparable. But who?

Intervention!

I think Reke and Cuz are going to have to work it out themselves.... Longshot, but I have no faith whatsoever in Westphalia.

Maybe Cisco can mediate :p

The problem is that both guys do their best work within 5ft of the basket. There is no inside/outside with the two, and if there it's in reverse with Cousins making outside jumpers. The other issue is Cousins isn't athletic enough to go up and over the guys that Reke draws to the basket, so it is hard to play the dumpoff game.

All the more reason to have a strong veteran point guard who runs the show. He can tell them both to take a hike (if need be).

Most if not all of it starts at the top. Management has let it be known since last season that this is Tyreke's team, but then they draft a player with 100x the emotion as Tyreke. How could Petrie think this would come together?

As far as coaching goes, it is just too laid back. How many times have we seen Tyreke jack up horrible low percentage shots? How many times has Casspi been out of place or has had horrible spacing causing a turnover? How many times have opponents been able to easily dribble inside to score on a uncontested layup? How many times does isolation plays end up being the only set used 90% of the game? It's clear the players control the team, not the coaches.

The real problem is the Kings coaching staff. The more losses we have the more the naysayers will be persuaded to agree. Give it some time and some more heartcrushing losses and the whole fanbase will be asking for some real qualified coaches. Just because you were former players doesn't make you good coaches. Kings coaching: A former high school assistant, and a DUI earner. It's amazing how much support they receive from the fans. Kinda explains the product on the court.

If you are going to brew up some conflict by telling stories of hearing some "fans" say that they are supposedly getting tired of Tyreke and that you supposedly saw Reke and DMC not hug once before the game, please back it up with some sort of evidence.

I was reading some fan forums somewhere and the fans seemed pretty torn between the two ;)

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Tyreke punch out Demarcus at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

I don't understand why fans are losing patience with Evans. He's in the middle of year 2 of his NBA career and is not even close to being a finished product yet. Is it because DMC is the new flavor and stupid fans only have room in their heart for one player to be the "man" in Sacramento? They did it with CWebb, did it with Bibby, did it with RonRon, they did it with Kevin and now it's happening to Reke. Why can't Kings' fans be happy that there are 2 potential big time players on the team right now and they BOTH need each other in order to be ELITE. WTF!

On that basis, let me just announce that I saw Tyreke give what looked like the finger to Demarcus Cousins a few nights ago somewhere.

The thing is, is that if he is going to voice his opinion, don't voice it as fact.

What do you want an 8 minute video documentary news show segment for the guy to be able to post his experience of talking to fans and watching the players in person at a game? How bout a link to the audio he secretly taped when he was having a conversation over beers at the game. Gee glad we have a stealth private investigator to get us the goods. Where would we be without it?

It's an opinion board. Kind of like the op-ed piece in a newspaper?

I get that, Hammer. The thing is, that's not opinion. That is simply saying things happened to try and "brew" up some conflict/controversy. There is a difference between saying your opinion and saying that things are happening/happened and then saying there is a melodrama because of it.

Personally, I think we're in trouble if either one of these guys are controlling the team. I don't think either one of them have much leadership potential. We may have a lot of young talent on this team, but they don't have much brains to go along with it.

i for one am happy that we have 2 unique talents on the team. it's a matter of growth together and understanding each others strengths and weaknesses. they haven't played much together if you think about it. it was i think the past 25 games or so that demarcus has started and played with reke. i can't wait til this offseason to see what adjustments will be made to this team.

You and I both, my friend. I'm waiting at least 3 full seasons with these 2 before I start making judgements of wether it will work or not. The major thing is there has to be growth in their games and they have to compromise a little of their games for the greater good.

And, Vlade4GM is spot on with his last post.

Absolutely!!! I guess I should have said "it seemed like". One guy was so bad in his "anti-Tyreke" sentiment, I turned around and told him that I was not gonna sit and listen to him kill my guy all night, and I politely moved. All these guys are "my guys". And I hate to hear fans in the arena be so negative against the home team players.

It is a fact. Fans at games are yelling for ball movement and moaning when he pulls it for a jumper after dribbling out the clock. Not passing the ball on the break. Yelling at Westfail to bench him for poor defense or not hustling. Happens every game.

I think a big reason for lack of fans at games is the style they are playing. It's not as fun to watch.

I am not sure if I would call what has happened as anyone trying to take control of the team.. I would say its more of a personality clash than anything else. DMC as we all well know is quite passionate and Tyreke isn't. We don't know what goes on behind closed doors.. it could be that Tyreke is not really affected by all these losses and DMC perhaps can't understand why and gets upset because he feels as if Tyreke should care. DMC has been part of winning programs all of his life, and losing now in such a fashion is very frustrating to him. It was in the heat of the moment thing and DMC is just not very good at maintaining his emotions at this point in his career. As someone mentioned before, winning cures all. No one wants to be labeled as a loser ! The situation will improve with time.. and with wins

Wait a minute, time out on the field... What do you mean "we all well know" that Evans isn't passionate? I know no such thing... are you possibly conflating passionate and emotive? It seems like an awful reach to assume that Evans doesn't care/is not passionate just because he doesn't jump up and down like a jackass everytime he turns the ball over or gets fouled. Would you say that Tim Duncan lacks passion? How about Kevin Durant? Neither of them seem to be particularly outwardly emotive, but I don't know if anyone would refer to them as lacking in passion.

Because of the style of play and the lack of direction of the team.
Ah. I understand the style of play, I can't stand iso all day long. I think we can argue about that the organization does have an idea what they want. They've seen teams dominate with elite play from a post player and a guard. They believe they have those players in Evans and Cousins. Do we, as fans, have the patience to see it happen?

To throw a tantrum like Cousins did after last nights game is purely selfish, nothing else. I understand he's young but give me a break. Reke had a good look and he took it.

To be honest, I'm sick of this "this is ___'s team" bs. These guys havnt done ****. How about focusing on playing team ball and actually closing out games. So frustrating. Get control of this team Westphal.

Just realized this is my 3,000th post, yay!

A good play is one that goes in the basket. A good look is what the losing team says. The whole play was terrible from the start. Evans is the last one on the court you want to take a 3. He should have drove to the free throw line and pulled up or passed to Cuz if collison clogged the lane. They would expect him to drive all the way. Cousins should have been on the block to start and Omri in the corner.

Oh, and what could have been a big mistake was Westfail taking a time out between FT's. Yes Durant missed the 2nd, but it also left them out of timeouts if they couldnt get the ball in.
