Kings to fire Westphal and... Geoff Petrie?!

#31
Seems credible. We all know Westphal is done, whether he makes it to the end of the season is the only question at this point. The idea of showing Petrie the door like this is kind of surprising. I'm not shocked that at this point Petrie's tenure in Sacramento could be coming to a end, its just the timing. If this report is accurate droping him mid season just doesn't sit right with me. I dunno, kind of feel like he deserves at least one more trade deadline.

No surprise John Whisenant is the heir apparent, which makes no sense. Even with zero NBA experience the Maloofs seem determined to give this guy a chance.

What a ****ing mess.

More Maloof: "I don’t know where that’s coming from. We’re fine. We have a gameplan. Our future looks bright."

More Maloof. "We have young talent, cap space...next year...We'll stick together. We're not going to go there. Not at all. Not true."
What troubles me now is how adverse to change the Maloofs seem to be.

If true, I'm in total agreement with this decision. Petrie has done a putrid job over the last 5 seasons. We can argue back and forth over the merits of certain personnel decisions, but the ultimate effect of Petrie's moves has been half-a-decade in the lottery, with more likely to come.

Knew I shouldn't have added my own commentary.
Compare that to me going to the kitchen for some cough medicene and then using the restroom (drinking lots of fluids as I am not feeling well) and yet I still beat you both. I'm quick like Pooh. Hard to imagine I attended the Kings game today in my condition but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to sit in a private suite.

I seriously hope that we don’t fire Geoff Petrie! I hope this part of it isn’t true.

It’s not Geoff’s fault that Paul can’t get these guys on the same page. We have some nice young talent, unfortunately they’re not coming together. But getting rid of Geoff would be a huge blow.

Dang on one part. Whoo on the other. Seems like the Maloofs nipped this in the bud before it even got going. 'Bout time they said SOMETHING this season. Now I wonder what will get Petrie to come out from under his rock?

I'd hate to be Joe Maloof right now with reporters calling and texting me this late/early. Glad he replied and said something about the reports.

Seriously.... 4yrs of this crap?... Petrie = FAIL. He's a very big part of this mess. Can anyone honestly say in the past 4 yrs he's done anything worthy of a building to a playoff caliber team? .. and please don't say how the Maloofs are in the way. Serious cop out. Petrie is no amateur, I'd hope he can stand up for himself... and if he can't, even more reason to shiitcan him. He's just as liable or more as anyone.

So, at this point, why wouldn't the Maloofs consider firing Petrie too? How much time does he need, 6 or 7yrs of junk? We have been one of the absolute worst teams for years.. after the gimp had finally realized we had to rebuild. His trades are questionable, and his high draft picks were the obvious choice at the times... he has had a good eye in the later picks... so what.

We are losers and the jokes of the league, plain and simple. Thank you kings management.

great post. i agree.

Enough. The pieces don't fit, no matter the promise that lies ahead. Keep Boogie, the rest of the team is worthless. I know the kid has had issues, but he is going to be solid. At least he plays with PASSION, when he is ALLOWED to play! The issue with Tyreke? Needs the lane open for him to drive, therefore leaving our rebounders with no chance at a put back when he misses, which is ALWAYS at this point.

I think Westphal is proving to be a sub-par coach especially for a young team, so I'd shed no tears for his departure.
Petrie, on the other hand, is an above-average talent evaluator and has shown he can put together a winning team. My concern would be, Who can we replace him with that would be better? We could certainly do worse... listening to David Kahn speak proves that.

And at this point I'd rather have Walton as coach... despite his trademark hyperbole, he had a lot of valid insights about the team during his broadcasts. Whether that would translate into effective coaching or disintegrate into confusion as he is distracted by the world's most beautiful butterfly that only he can see, is unknown.

Dang just when I got my hopes up ... It's not any real knock on Westphal, and I'm fine with sticking with him, but at this point I don't think we can get much worse, so it's not like trying a change could be any worse than doing nothing

yeah, lets fire petrie and pick up who?? bill walton? whisenet? this is a adelman bullcrap move. we're digging the grave for the kings for the next decade. if this happens and the kings fall apart further, i'm not watching anymore kings games. the maloofs basically forced the peja trade, fired adelman, hired muss, hired reggie and now look at the next move? who is the GM of the team? let the basketball professionals handle the team.

You know, if its the cost of avoiding firing Petrie in a year when he's finally done just about eerything right -- yes you heard that right clowns, we have been doing it RIGHT, whatever the results -- and avoiding ridiculous back to the amateurs names like Wisenhant (who I am so very tired of hearing about) and Walton (who would be completely unsufferable as a coach -- I can only imagine players rolling their eyes at his rambles -- and not physically capabale anyway)...then I say keep Westphal and give him a raise and comapny car.

How you like that for a compound mess of a sentence? :p

And BTW, yes, it could be exactly right that the source of this whole thing is Voison. We have seen this before int he internet age -- the national writer picks up a blog or note from the local op ed rumormonger and passes that on to the national audience as fact -- the "sources" are in fact the local write, who's sources are her fantasies and favorites. Then the national guy writes his story, everybody sees it back in Sacto and thinks it must be true because the natinal guy wrote it, when in fact he's just amplified the musings fo the local writer everybody already knows.

There is absolutely no reason Petrie shouldn't be in the hot seat at this point too. The whole damn franchise should be stooge slapped.

They won't pay for Pritchard, or Van Gundy, or anyone who would make these moves worthwhile. They'll bring in one of their cronies like Whiz and things will somehow manage to get even worse.
