Sources: Kings poised to fire Petrie, Westphal

Key points:

Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof are strongly considering firing GM Geoff Petrie and coach Paul Westphal in a sweeping indictment of the direction of the team, two people familiar with the situation told CBSSports.com.

After the an 84-79 home loss to the Bucks Friday night, one source said Gavin Maloof was overheard saying in the tunnel that the culture of the organization must change. "We have to hit the reset button," Maloof said, according to the source. It was the Kings' 21st loss in 23 games.

John Whisenant, a longtime friend of the Maloofs and the GM and coach who led the Sacramento Monarchs to the WNBA championship, is at the top of the Maloofs’ list of candidates to succeed Petrie as GM, according to sources. Assistant coach Jim Eyen, a longtime assistant for former Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy, is the probable choice to take over as interim coach while the Kings sort out their grim future.

Sam Amick just tweeted this:

Regarding @KBerg_CBS on Kings, Maloofs certainly at wit's end about Petrie and Westphal and have been discussing direction for weeks.

Former Monarchs coach John Whisenant indeed in running 2 coach, but possibly be GM. Bill Walton, Kings assts Eyen, Elie in coach discussions.

All that being said, these are owner discussions about possibilities. I have not been told that they are prepared to pull the trigger.

Just got off the phone with Kings owner Joe Maloof. Regarding whether axe is coming for Petrie or Westphal: "No, that's not true..."

First thing I thought when I checked out te score this morning was: "Westphal needs to go".
Firing Petrie though is simply foolish, he's been doing a great job, this is an Adelman-like dumb move.

I know Brick is going to live up to his namesake on the Walton thing (if you know what I mean), but I wouldn't mind him as coach. He made some very good points about this team while doing commentary. In 5 minutes I knew he was more qualified to coach this team than Westphal. Not saying much I know, but still something. ;)

I have a seven year old cousin who'd be more qualified to coach this team

I'm going to kind of not believe the Cousins thing. Every time down the court the game before last they were screaming at the other players to get the ball to Cousins.

More from Sam Amick:

More Maloof: "I don’t know where that’s coming from. We’re fine. We have a gameplan. Our future looks bright."

More Maloof. "We have young talent, cap space...next year...We'll stick together. We're not going to go there. Not at all. Not true."
