No idea what to say here. This isn't a slump. This is a whole different team.

I've heard the pleas, so a theme night it will be. Pretty Girls? Pretty Boys? Pretty llamas? Who knows?

Boxscore

Alrighty folks, time to do this. Wish I had some comfort food for you about the team, but...well its ugly. Truth is that whatever disruption Kevin's forced reinsertion caused really ballooned beyond just Kevin by the end of this trip, although I think you could say that the difference between the ugly losses early in the trip, and the uglier losses late, was that early in the trip we had a productive player in the lineup who disrupted everybody else, while late in the trip we had a completely unproductive player in the lineup who disrupted everybody else.

So, its back to a Pretty People thread. Truth is that I was not planning on doing many more of these. The idea just seemed a little played out, and just did not seem to fit the vibe this season when the basketball has been interesting enough on its own. Well..no longer. So without further ado I will take the suggestion proffered in this thread, and do a Pretty Girls of Disaster Movies thread. Except that the women are suffering around here too, and frankly disaster movies are not a great place to find packs of pretty girls -- the theme should have been horror movie/Scream Queens methinks (and if the Kings keep playing like this we'll do that one too) -- so we'll split the difference: The Prettier Side of Disaster Films: Guys, Girls, and a Llama.

Greene ( D+ ) -- a mirror image of the game against the Magic, got off to the hot start and completely disappeared. Drew Wade to start, played solid defense, but the great ones sometiems don't care. Splashed in a three to begin things, had a near out of control drive end up being called a +1 rather than a charge, added a block on defense too. But airballed his next three, and after returning threw up a wild shot, got a T, and was back to bad Donte again. Overpenetrated and threw a bad pass at JT's feet with a 1:00 to go in the half. 1 of 2 FTs just before halftime for his first points since scoring the first 6 of the game, but missed the buzzer beating layup attempt at the end of the half. Started the third off shaky again, getting his shot blocked on the drive and missing a jumper, and with us still dragging Westphal quickly replaced him (and not the biggest source of the drag) with Omri. Was back for the garbagetime of the 4th, and didn't play well, missing everything he put up and generally lacking that infectuous enthusiasm (indeed how could you have it after this trip?).

Tea Leoni (Deep Impact)

Thompson ( C- ) -- lane violation again, come on, get your head in game, blocked a shot early on O'Neal, but Beasely's mobility a major issue early and we eventually subbed him out to get a betetr matchup. Got an o-board that was big time blocked by O'Neal. Dunk down the lane courtesy of Reke. Strong take +1 with a couple of minutes to go in the half, but missed the FT again. Was active on the glass in the third, but could get nothing to fall, again. Grabbed an offensive rebound, but blocked on the follow by Wade of all people. Forced a turnaround jumper that had no chance. Was replaced for the final time with 4 minutes to go in the quarter. Given the minutes probably would ahve eventually worked this into another poor double double like he did in Orlando. But still not a good game. Remember when he had that hot streak early and people around here were talking about him as 20-10 material? Somebody needs to hang an Out to Lunch sign around his neck pending his return from mental vacation.

Liv Tyler (Armageddon) -- rivals, so to speak, as both cheesy meteor threatens Earth twins came out the same summer in competition that year

Brockman ( C ) -- quick illegal screen for his first foul, looked too short to guard Jermaine and O'Neal was off to the fast start. Got an inside score on a roll after setting the pick for Reke. Missed a jumper again in the early third. Cleanup hoop on a Jason miss. Decidely pedestrian all around effort this time. Small sample size of course, but fits in with what we all should have known: Brockman's best role is probably off the bench as an energy sparkplug. As a starter has looked small and not been able to provide that change of pace energy boost.

John Cusack (2012) -- the rom com king did a disaster flick to qualify -- awwww, isn't he cute? Of course including him meant hat I did not get to go with Amanda Peet or Thandie Newton for one of the ladies under my self imposed one pretty person/one movie rule. So boo.

Martin ( F ) -- this was just a wow. Worst game of his career? Quite possibly. At the start of this trip Kevin came back, and it seemed to disrupt everybody else. The whole team suffered, but Kevin himself looked pretty Kevinish. Bu these last two games...just wow. Now the hwole team is disrupted, byut Kevin has had back to back games where he looks nothing like Kevin Martin, uncomfortable, flat, and just looked like he quit out there. Yesterday I gave him a D-, because for a few minutes at the start oif that game he was at least helping wiht his passing. But tonight? Are you kidding me? He killed us with terrible early play, racking up 4 TOs in the first 6 minutes of the game. Missed his first shot, turned it over, got his only hoop off a screen, then a third turnover on a bad pass, beaten by Wade in the post. Missed another shot, then a layaup. Blew a backdoor cut, but got fouled. And the thing that I think has helped us sprial too is his usage -- just was never going to be taken out apparently no matter how poorly he did. To call that a double standard would be an understatement, but if a coach is goign to thrwo that sort of respect at you, you damn well betetr reward it with something. And tonight there was absolutely nothing. Back to back 5p 1-7shooting nights? And this time swapping out the 5 assists which bolstered the grade i Orlando for 5 TOs which finished it here. Came back in and immediately passed on a shot and threw a bad pass instead, even missed the technical FT on Jermaine O'Neal at the end of half. Came out in second half as we ran a series of staggered pciks to get him free, and he did his semi-flop motion to get to the line. And again only hit 1 of 2. Then missed an open 18 footer. Drove and blocked by Wade. And finally was mercifully done for the night. Probably as big a relief to him as to the rest of the team. Westphal had some interesting quote about how he knew that his kids were going to fight back, and how he would like to see everybody else do that too. Now who do you think that everybody else referred to? Kevin was apparently last seen with a towel over his head and his face in his hands in the lockerroom after the game. That seemed to about sum things up.

Mark Wahlberg (The Perfect Storm) -- Clooney was there as well of course, but I distinctly recall tagging him once a long time ago in my first attempt at a pretty guys thread, and I think this is the first time for Wahlberg. Also meant no Diane Lane/Karen Allen/Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio under my 1 actor/1 movie rule. In any case still uttlery amazes me that Marky Mark has somehow so totally ditched his cheeseball music past that he not only becomes an A-list actor/sex symbol, but nobody but me even mentions his origins. The Funky Bunch have to be going, daaamnnn.

Evans ( C ) -- fought a one man battle for a long time in the first half, but I think tired in the third as he looked around at the end of the long roadtrip and wondered what the hell happened to his teammates. Still finished with a team high 15 on 5-10 shooting, but obviosuly not at the level yet in his career where he can turn things singlehandedly when they are going this bad. Began things with a quick little foul reaching in on Jermaine. Played some good help defense on Beasely causing him to miss, good pass on the pick and roll to Brockman, then overpowered Alston inside. Started to get the attacking game going, but nobody folllowed. Didn't get the shot off to beat the 1st quarter buzzer, but was going to be blocked anyway. Back in and missed the technical FT. Nice dropoff pass to JT rumbling down the lane, kept on getting to the line, and had a great +1 at the 1:30 mark of the half. In and out with the 3. Finshed up the first half with 13pts as pretty much the lone bright point (Spencer would have been the other). Several turnovers in the third as he tried to do too much to get us going. Set up Casspi for a side jumper with a minute to go in the third, and soon was gone for good. Finished with 0 rbeounds again, and if there is fatigue, maybe that is where it showed up. Sporadically guarded Wade after half, and did a good enough job for what it is worth.

Hilary Swank (The Core) -- I generally prefer women without lantern jaws, but Hilary has long had one of the best bodies in the biz. And lest I be accused of objectifying a serious actress, let me just note that if you don't want to be oggled, you can't put out super-sexy glam shots like this. So oggle away.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bench

Udoka ( C+ ) -- in early again as the rotations are all messed up at this point. Had a quick turnover on the drive, 1 on 1 play for the side pop, did a good job of slowing Beasley for a while as Beasley is half SF anyway. On a night like tonight though a roleplayer's 3pts 2rebs aren't going to help much.

Zooey Deschanel (The Happening) -- cute and quirky and got herself involved in one hell of a bad movie (even if the Philly scenes were filmed within blocks of my old apartment there lending it nostalgia value). Not sure whether the disaster there was the one depicted, or the film being made. Wahlberg embarrassed himself in it too.

Hawes ( B ) -- you know, inevitable spells of softness aside, Spencer mgiht be one of the few players on the Kings who can come home holding his head relatively high during this trip. He was mostly aggressive, seemed to be just about the only King who actually benefitted from slipping back into an old role next to Kevin, and generally provided a boost during most of his minutes out there this trip. This game he was probably our #2 guy, even if a bunch of his stats did come during the heavy garbagetime of the late game. Came in caught Noc's airball and laid it in, then followed a missed Reke layup as well. Good energy in the early 2nd as we closed the gap. Missed a strong post move where he actually used his body to set it up. Then hit a jumper. Aggressive and confident before half, whihc made basically two Kings you could say that about. Not effective in the third -- airballed a near three. Big dunk attempt blocked by Dwayne Wade, who is 8 inches shorter than him. Played pretty well in the garabge minutes -- turnaround jumper in the mid 4th. Followed Sergio's alley opp to Casspi with one of his own. Finished up with a 14pt 7reb night.

Jake Gyllenhaal (The Day After Tommorow) -- here's some more beefcake for the ladies. Or maybe its cheescake. After the whole Brokeback Mountain thing its not exactly clear which constituency this one is for.

Nocioni ( C+ ) -- airballed an open side 10 footer, then turned around and hit a challenged 3ptr as everything was topsy turvy tonight. Was part of the neergy crew in the early 2nd that briefly got a very little going, but only racked up fewer than 8 minutes. Doubt he felt deprived on this night.

Steve McQueen (The Towering Inferno) -- going back to an old classic here, both Steve and Paul Newman got tagged for the classic old disaster flick The Towering Inferno, but I remember giving Newman his due at some point last year, so this time aroudn its McQueen.

Casspi ( C+ ) -- no production early, but part of the good energy crew in the early 2nd that briefly had us in this one. Missed a deep jumper and then a shallow jumper, but picked off a bad pass by Chalmers. Became an exemplar for how things have been going for us when he broke up a pass on defense and the ball flew in the air and fell on through the hoop. Good steal up top and full length gallop with a pack of dogs on his heels for a dunk. Added a little jumper. Airballed a corner three off a stumbling Reke drive, but then hit a jumper from shorter range off another Reke feed. Had a d-board and lost it out of bounds. Missed the 3 at the buzzer of the third. Padded those stats a bit again in late garbagetime as he went up for an alley oop from Sergio, and then a second from Hawes the next possession.

Rebecca DeMornay (By Dawn's Early Light) -- the old Risky Business hottie appeared in a rather excellent but long forgotten HBO nuclear war movie called By Dawn's Early Light.

Udrih ( C- ) -- just has regressed right back into I have a masive contract and will be here forever 2008-09 Benohood. Amazing what a difference it was while he was in place with a major role and minutes. Might be something to ponder even if Kevin is moved -- there is some question what Beno would provide if his roel/minutes are munched by anyone, whetehr it be Kevin, Donte, Omri, Cisco, wheover. So, not much in the early stint, and picked up two fouls as well. Back in the game in the late 2nd in that stupid 3-guard lineup we keep trying to force and repeatedly overpowered by Q. Got his first point hitting a technical foul shot in the late third (first and only guy to hit one all night). Followed with a little jumper. Nice full speed dish to Brockman in the garbagetime of the early 4th.

Mena Suvari (Atomic Train) -- back around the time Mena got famous appearing in movies starting with the word American, she also appeared in something called "Atomic Train" (I think the star was actually Kristen Davis, who is also pretty). Oddly Atomic Train did not do as much for her rep. Maybe if they had called it American AtomicTrain...

Rodriguez ( B- ) -- in for the final 8 minues, and whiile he did not show the burst he had in Orlando, he was solid again and had a few little moments. Threw an alley opp to Casspi, hit a jumper, 1 of 2 FTs, then a turnover as he tried to pass. Got the tough +1 drive to get us over the 80pt mark (a woohoo! moment anymore).

Thomas Jane (The Mist) -- better beefcake? I know, The Mist wasn't exactly a pure disaster flick. More of a pshcological horror/scifi/disaster mix, but close enough. As an aside, I forgot what the move was I saw with Jane in it, but basically he pulled a similar stunt to the one he pulls at the end of The Mist -- in other words I don't want this guy anywhere around me in a time of crisis.

Armstrong ( C+ ) -- in for final 8 mintues, had a pokeaway steal on Haslem, but then missed a corner jumper. Almost had an offensive rebound off a missed FT, but the ball caromed off his head out of bounds -- our guys heads wre in the way a lot tonight. Finished our scoring by blocking a shot at the three point line, then taking the ball and going full court for the dunk.

Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic) -- and of course how could I end this any other way? How many of our *ahem* 29 year old female posters saw this movie again, and again, and again, and again and... we will of course never know because nobody will admit to being part of the giggling mob thta made it the #1 grossing movie of all time. In any case, thought of Connery in Meteor, Brosnan in Dante's Peak, but I had used them before. So DiCrapio...oops, sorry, old habit -- still have a hard time remembereing that he's now a major legitimate actor rather than teen pinup (never in a million years would I have guessed) -- anyway Leo it is FTW.

Since the Golden Globes were last week and the SAG awards are tonight, I suggest the theme: actresses in comedy and/or disaster movies.

We're at a disadvantage every single time we step out on the floor.

Brockman, Thompson and Hawes should not be our starting big men right now. Simple as that.

I remember just a few short weeks ago we were competitive with anyone we played. Now, we are competitive with no teams. We may seriously be the poorest team in the league at this moment.

I don't know what is going on with Kevin, maybe the doctors put the screw in the wrong wrist? I heard a story a while back a woman went in to have her gall bladder removed, and she ended up getting breast augmentation. True story!

I had my gall bladder removed - thank god it didn't turn out that way.

Although philosophically, I guess it could be a metaphor for the Kings season. They looked to have something fixed, yet, it ultimately wasn't what they needed, although people claimed it made them look better. In the end, we can all hope to have the gall bladder removed, but leave the augmentation. Everybody wins.

Except for the gall bladder.

What, too deep for this board?

So other fans share in my pessimistic view of

Kevin is traded for capspace, we recover to about how we played while he was out

I don't trust Petrie to make trades. But hopefully he will make a great one.

You answered your own question.
Petrie needs to find away to bring in a true center. We've got the chips, he just needs to make something happen.

I wish having the chips were all it takes. It would help to have a partner in this tango of which you speak.

The question is to ask why the Kings are a different team.

What changed from the end of December to January?

My list of possible answers (in descending order):

1. Harder schedule
2. Demoralizing OT losses
3. Holes in front court exposed for all the league to see.
4. Fatigue
5. Defense on Tyreke
6. League takes the Kings somewhat serious now.
7. Underdog mentality has given way to a win-now mentality.

My solution: Force the team to watch "Rocky" before every game.

I think there's a lot of validity to this list. I might even put "demoralizing OT losses" ahead of everything else.

I would put fatigue up front and harder. The team looks tired and more lethargic. They are giving major minutes to 3 rookies and a virtual rookie (Green), and a player who has yet to play a full season (Hawes). Couple that with us playing against a lot of the league's elite and it takes its tole. Especially considering that the lack of emotional excitement (the winning streak and good publicity) is probably taking a mental tole as taxing as the physical one.

I think you've forgotten how bad last season was.

are you serious? they've won one game this month.... this might happen again next month.... this is worse, we didnt have tyreke last year. we had most of these players and garcia hasnt played yet. we replaced garcia for tyreke basically. we are a way better team who has just offically become worse. how can an nba team win only 1 game in an entire month? one game in a month.... we were flirting with a .500 record towards the end of december. we are like 13 games below .500... wow, how is that not worse than last season? that was supposed to be a freak of nature accident... theus shouldnt have been an actual nba coach. we had a legit excuse last season. we have a real nba level coach and a stud superstar in evans, this should be happening. we werent supposed to win it all but we were supposed to beat teams like philly and the warriors. maybe upset a contender every once in a while because a youngster had a career night. it happens, its all about matchups....

I love how your opinion of Tyreke suddenly shifted to this when it fits your argument.

Well a previous post in this thread said it perfectly. Our front-court players are simply not good enough for us to expect to remain competitive. What is taking management so long to realize this is what puzzles me. To be honest, in my opinion every blow-out loss is a win until something is done. Let's be honest, Jason Thompson and Spencer Hawes might show us signs of being able to play in the league from time to time, but together they should not be your teams' starting front-court.

If you really look at this team, we are a solid center and a decent PF away from being competitive every night, regardless of the opponent. With a real starting frontcourt, this team can win some ball games.

It never ceases to amaze me what a few "unexpected" wins for a rebuilding, developing team will do to the fans, when followed by many losses.

Newsflash: This is a very young team. The young players are getting court time we all wanted them to have. Just because our team's enthusiasm and ability to sneak up on poor teams at the beginning of a season, where our schedule was very very much in our favor, we are now just saying "oh this team really sucks and we must trade for a big man NOW." Well, folks, Rome wasn't built in a day. We are headed in the right direction and unless all you can see are wins and losses, you would still see that. You don't take a last place team and make it into a contender in one damn season. If we cannot pull off a good trade by the deadline, waiting until the offseason to continue our rebuild is not the end of the world. If you cannot let the rebuild take the "normal" 2-3 years to happen, then you will be angry and disgruntled all the time. I will say again, what many have said before......HAVE PATIENCE. Think realistically, and not with the wild enthusiasm you were fortunate enough to feel during our easy early schedule. And, above all else, remember...it is darkest before the dawn.
