NFL Playoffs pick 'em contest

#1
Hey, we did it here last year, so let's see who wins the gleaming trophy (what trophy?) in 2010 as we head to Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.

We start with four interesting wild card games and here's my crystal ball prognostication (feel free to predict score and add any game feel comments if you wish including during the action or after game over).

*Lastly, I forget exactly how we did contest scoring last year with a running leader board from Wild Card Weekend all the way to NFL Championship. I'm sure someone will remind us or assist me in getting it tabulated correctly. Surely, it wouldn't be all that complicated:confused::cool:

Saturday 1-8

NY Jets 16
Cincinnati 13

Dallas 27
Philadelphia 20

Sunday 1-9

Baltimore 20
New England 17

Green Bay 24
Arizona 23

I just went through the archives real quick, and I can't find last years. Odd. We'll see if we can't figure it out.

Oh, and I'll move this to the Games section, but I'll leave a redirect.

I just did a quick search and found the thread. If you do a NFL Playoff Matchup Game 2009 search, it was started by uolj.

I see that we simply assigned 1 pt for correct pick and 0 pt for incorrect - so should be no problem tabulating. A running list of all participants was shown with the leader and on down. Everyone who wants to play should certainly jump in before first playoff tilt tomorrow at 1:30 PT and once you start please keep coming back to pick 'em all the way to Super Bowl on Feb. 7, 2010. Thanks!

(amended comments below now showing scoring system we'll be using)

The idea is to pick the winners of the NFL playoff games each week. A correct pick on wild card weekend gets you 1 point, 2 points for the divisional round, 4 points for a conference championship correct pick and 8 points for picking the Super Bowl winner. There will be bonus points and/or tiebreakers for the Super Bowl predictions.

No need to post the scores if you don't want to (but feel free to do so if you'd like). Only winners count for points in the game.

Kewl!

You guys please keep me straight on tabulating correct score for everyone each week. Should be no sweat, but math was always my weakest subject in skool:eek: Hopefully, we get a nice handful of participants as it looks like around a dozen to about 20 or so have played in the past. One great thing about the scoring system in the past that we'll use again this year is you could have a terrible opening round or bad divisional playoff round but get back into it quick at the end with the big pts awarded for Conf championship and Super Bowl.

Saturday 1-8

NY Jets10
Cincinnati 24
I can't see Mark Sanchez not having a horrible game here. The Bengals defense is much better than they showed last week, and they're at home. I'm predicting Sanchez throws two touchdowns, one for the Jets, one for the Bengals.

Dallas 24
Philadelphia 30
I think the Cowboys went too hard to get the division title. They got the home game, which is good, but that stadium isn't hard to play in. The Eagles stripped all the delightful little pressure packages out of their defense, and McNabb and his receivers were off. I think it will be a close one, but Andy Reid is 7-0 in the first round in his career, and it's hard to bet against that.

Sunday 1-9

Baltimore17
New England 31
This is what Belichick has been waiting for since DecisionGate, a chance to shut up all the critics. Brady is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, Randy Moss is still one of the best receivers, and the defense can still make plays. Now it's time for all of that to come together. Flacco can win games with his arm (almost 500 attempts this season), but still makes rookie mistakes at times. Pats pull away in the second half.

Green Bay 20
Arizona 16
The Cardinals are incredibly beat up. Boldin might not play. The Packers defense has been very good in the latter half of the season (surprisingly, they've been better since Kampman went out; maybe because Dom Capers stopped trying to force a square peg into a round hole). I think they're going to get a ton of pressure on Kurt Warner. This one could go either way, but I think the Pack comes up big and sets up a re-rematch against the Brett Favre-led Vikings (which would depend on the Eagles beating the Cowboys).

Bengals 24
Jets 20

I think this is gonna be close for 4 quarters, but Bengals come from behind and take it on their home field

Pats 27
Ravens 15

Even without Welker, they have Randy Moss who is still one of the best receivers in the league. To me this comes down to QB's, and I gotta go with Brady over Flacco. Gonna be a much closer game than the score indicates though

Eagles 31
Cowboys 10

Don't expect the same Eagles team this week Cowboys. This one is over at halftime

Packers 21
Cardinals 13

I have a hard time believing that the Cardinals can make the same run they did last year. I gotta admit, I still consider them underdogs, and they usually surprise me. But I consistently underestimate the Packers (never mind them giving the Bucs their first win) and so I think they're gonna play solid defense on Fitzgerald & Co.

I always forget about starting these. Thanks Mr. Haze for remembering and running it!!

Dallas 24
Philadelphia 16

Baltimore 14
New England 27

Green Bay 33
Arizona 30

It might get more visibility in the General Sports forum, which is where the last one was. I think we just put it there so we could comment on the games in the same thread.

Maybe one of the mods can move it over to the general forum and get more participation for next weekend's playoff games.

Done. In the future, though, if you want something moved, you're better off to drop one of us a PM because we don't always get a chance to read all the threads right away.

:)

Thanks for moving the thread. I think the general forum gets more traffic than the fantasy forum, so hopefully, more members will see this and participate.

If people who would like to participate and they missed this week, no worries, its not to late to make your picks for next weekend.

If people want to join in, they can still pick the winners for three of the four games, since none of them have started yet.

:)

I can't believe Marvin Lewis would challenge that rather obvious catch in bounds right in front of his bench and lose it. Now he as no more challenges rest of the game - and it's only in 1st Q! I always thought Lewis was a mediocre coach. Cincy up 7-0 though.

Sanchez incredible and playing w/in Jets power run system. Shut down corner back Revis does it again by taking top receiver completely, absolutely, totally out of a game. I never want to hear Ocho-stinko tell the world how great he is. He's not a great WR - good yes - far from great. Coach Ryan said Jets are Super Bowl bound and his players seem to believe it. Maybe not, but I bet much higher seeds like San Diego, Indy don't want to face that Jets blitz pressure D - and Revis.

Early contest returns: Only 3 picked NYJ out of 11 total contestants.

2nd game featuring Dallas and Philly looking like expected slug fest. No score after 1Q. Dallas moving the ball, Philly offense under extreme pressure from Dallas D. Cowboys taking a page from Eagles blitz - by employing their own.

Dallas up 27-7 at half and totally dominate - again! Only TD for Philly was on pass by Michael Vick in at QB for the one play. If I was Reid I would seriously consider starting him in second half or tell McNabb he's back in for the first series and unless he produces - Vick is in. I bet Reid is too PC to do it but it might just save his job!

Well this sucks....The pats are down 14-0 and its only into a minute and a half in the first quarter. Man, this is going to be a long day. I should have went golfing.

Ok, I am officially backing out of this playoff prediction thread, both this one and all future ones. If I remember correctly, I got most of my picks wrong last year, and 0 for 4 in the first round this year.I'm assuming I put some curse on all these teams, so I'm gonna let things play out as they should :p

I know I put curses on anything I don't play privately. Why I haven't bet on sports since that cursed Broncos-Redskins SB.

No no, you'll turn it around. I'm sure of it. Keep posting your picks. Just please make sure to post them early, preferably before I go home from work Friday afternoon. Thanks! :p
