We're playing hard, and we're playing mostly well. But the road thing has passed monkey stage at this point and will be swinging off of the Empire State Building soon. We need a breakthrough win out there before it becomes a mental thing.

Boxscore

Nocioni ( D- ) -- lost in the Spencer, uh, "fireworks" was the fact that Noc did absolutely nothing out there for us either. Had that one good game for us against the Wolves, otherwise just a struggle for weeks now. Did nothing early and played all of about 7 minutes in the first half. Did come back in the third to hit a big three in the early minutes to stop the bleeding after the Blazers had come roaring back and we could not score. That's actually the whole reason for any grade at all here. Showed a lack of poise in the late going taking shots he should not have, and too quick in the clock. Not exactly the veteran leadership you are looking for in that situation. PLayed all of 17minutes on the night, gave us 5pts 2rebs on 2-7 shooting, and just generally was no help at all.

Thompson ( B- ) -- did not get involved offensively in the early going here, but Aldridge really did nothing back the other way in the first half so the sluggish start was not that damaging. Played nice defense on the switch against Roy though, and after returning in the mid-2nd dropped in a couple of nice in control post moves, then got fouled on a cut after the Blazers tried to double Reke and left Jaosn with the clear path to the hoop. Came up with a faceup 3pt play in the third as we clawed to stay in things, and had a decent second half offensively. Problems were 2 fold 1) while Jason had a decent 2nd half offensively, Aldridge had a huge one. Little of that could be attributed to Jason though because we just wouldn't let him play LaMarcus for whatever reason. So we hid Jason off on Pryzbilla while our other bigs got torched. And 2) Json's 4th quarter decisionamking was just schoolyard pickup game terrible. Grabbed a d-board in the mid 4th and threw an incredibly dumb oulet pass ahead to...Spencer Hawes on the leak that just had no chance to be comkpleted, and that Spencer would have had no chcance to hit even if it had been completed. Hit a jumper, but made some critical errors down the stretch. Took a bad long jumper, got an offensive foul running into Pryz, blew a chippee layup when he got an off rebound, then got trapped in the corner on offense and wasted our shotclock leaving Reke to throw up a desperation three at the buzzer. Just bad stuff, and a lot of it, as for the night at least the question of whether Reke should ahve the ball more in the crunch was a definitive "damn right he should" because the rest of the guys were being idiots.

Hawes ( F ) -- and here it is, the long awaited and much anticipated Spencer Hawes "F" game. There have been people urging it all season, panicking at the site of every 7pt 4reb 3-11 shooting night and wanting to annoint such relative mediocrity an "F". But I had confidence in Spencer. I knew he was capable of worse yet and did not want to cheapen the grade when it came. And so I saved this grade for a performance like tonight's. Was whisper soft from the beginning of this one, and that should shock nobody who has watched him play against these Blazers bigs over the last 3 seasons. Even with Spencer boogeyman Oden out, Wiltzilla still loomed, and I thnk much of tonight's performance can be explained by Spencer having soiled himself. Was invisible early as Wiltzilla celebrated the 6th consecutive year of soft Sacto centers padding his career stats. Came back in for what was effectively his game highlight, aggressively going at Pryzbilla in the 2nd quarter and thowing up wild hook shots. Was quick to the glass to follow one of them up too, to account for half of his points and rebounds on the night on one play. Was on Aldridge to start the third and quickly got torched. Responded back the other way by picking up an offensive foul on the break and bricking a hook. By the early 4th we were hiding him from Aldridge as well as Pryz, and quickly inserted him when neither guy was out there. But problem is that when those guys came back, one is 6'11" and the other is 7'1", and Brockman and Thomas looked silly trying to guard that kind of size. So Westphal stuck with Spencer. And Spencer responded like a ch*mp (I'll let you decide whether the missing letter is an a or a u (or possibly an i). Just did nothing at all for us, no scoring, no rebounding, every shot was a soft flip that bounced off the rim, every pick and roll a seemingly unsolvable puzzle on defense. And on a critical play in the final minutes he reacted slowly to penetration, and rather than smacking the guy just slapped him for the +1 to really put us in the hole. I've mentioned before that I think Spencer has a lot of tealent. I've also mentioned before that I don't think you can teach toughness, that you just either are or not. And tonight Spencer was most certainly not. 28min 4pts 2rebs on 2-7 shooting from your starting center. I mean, WTH?

Greene ( C- ) -- aggressive and wild to start, and am having a hard time figuring exactly who has told hime that he's a primary option while he is out there. Got up more shots in 14 minutes than Reke did the whole game. When we fell behind early was quickly swapped out. Was back in for the final defensive play of the first half and did a nice job defending Roy on the switch. Dumb forced drive to start the 3rd quarter, right into Pryzbilla. Would repeat that mistake again later in the game. Note Donte: Pryz is a shotblocker. Was surprisingly in the game down the stretch and did a solid job disrupting Roy on defense. Agian made a wild drive at the 1:00 mark that went from oh no! to oh yeah! as he threw himself inside, hit the layup and drew the foul. MIssed the damn free throw thgouh as boht he nad Reke missed late ones that dented our chances. Would say was teetering on the verge of our of control in this one, but fact is he was over the ledge. Chill dude!

Evans ( A- ) -- nifty drives to start as always, was defensively active for steals as well but got into quick foul trouble diving down to try to rip one away from Pryzbilla. Had to sit a long stretch adn did not return until the mid second quarter. Was aggressive again after returning, slashing to the hoop, beating double teams with the pass, and again creaitng havoc defensively. Got on the boards down the stretch of the half. Was working Miller in the post to start the second half and causing the Blazers problems. Missed his only true jump shot of the game (there was later a desperatin three which he had to throw up of balance against the shot clock violation) when he kind of just randomly pulled up and clunked a long J, but got back on the subsequent Blazers break for a big block to temporarily save the hoop (Blazers got it back and converted). Killed the Blazers in the late thrid just slashing inside again and again, including debuting a driving hook shot that could be deadly, and bulling us back out to a nice lead entering the 4th. Never missed on a drive for the entire game, and the power & body control on some of those drives left me thinking there might only be 4 guys in the world could have pulled off -- Bron, Kobe, Wade & this kid. Was playing strong defense on Miller in the 3rd as well, cutting him pff at every pass. At that point it was a short night, but it would have been a straight A night. Kid was putting on a show. But it was too little Reke late. And much of that is not his fault -- we held him out for the first 4-5 minutes of the 4th while our Sergio/Beno combo struggled and gave away the lead, and then late we were being too cute, too democratic, for a team that could not score. It was too much Beno handling, too much JT making decisions, too much lesser lights -- you don't win in the NBA on Benos or JTs, you win with stars. And facing in a packed in defense Reke was being too unselfish there by the end, and the consequence was the lesser lights faioled, and we only scored 14 points in the 4th. Sometimes when you are the star you just have to take over because you are the only one who can. Stepped up briefly at the 2:00 mark to give us a last kick -- playing great defense on Roy and forcing the turnover, and then driving, drawing the foul on Pryz, and almost, almsot the +1 to keep us close. But it rolled halfway down and then popped out, Reke missed 1 of the 2 FTs, and instead of a 3pt play to get us back within 1 it ended up only being a 1pt play and we never caught back up. Finished with a ridiculously efficeint 19pts 7rebs 3ast 2stl night on 7-9 shooting (with 1 of those 2 misses being the desperation heave). He hit everything he took basically. But with the offense collapsing late we needed him to get a little selfish and take some more. Fine line there, but "taking what the defense gives you" is not actually always the best policy. Not when you are a star. There is a reason they are giving it to you, and the very value of a star is that they can sometimes take what they want from the defense, rather than just settling for what the defense wants them to take.

Udrih ( B+ ) -- got off to such a great start to this one, carrying us offensively in the first half, that this grade is a bit of a disappointment. Was in early, hit his first shot, airballed his second, but then used a spin move into the lane against 1400 yr old Juwann Howard, missed it, scrapped for the rebound, and then finished for the highlight reel +1. Beno Udrih, scrapper. Who would've thunk? Very strong play down the stretch of the first and carried us offensively throughout the half. Think he knocked down 5 straight at one point there as we went into the break with a nice lead and a real chance to break through on the road. And he would have to have had an A or at worst an A- after that first half show. And yet here we sit at B+, and I almost went flat B. Just never got anything going after half, part of it being increased defensive pressure by the Blazers, part of it looking to be Beno maybe being a little too consciosu of the hot first half and starting to force shots he normally would not. Got matched up with Roy in the early 4th and that was a mismatch that helped the Blazers quickly catch back up. Could not duplicate the offensive push of the first half while Reke sat again, and after Reke returned still could not get anything going depsite the Blazers shading everything toward the rook. Beat by Bayless for the game sealer at the 17 second mark to finish things. 15pt first half giving us the big push ahead, 2pt second half on 1-5 shooting, and just invisible in the final quarter. Keeps the "+" by the skin of his teeth because the first half was more outstanding than the second half was awful.

Udoka ( B+ ) -- got the surprisingly early call back in his hometown (er...think it is his hometown. At least his first pro town, and I think his college town). Anyway brought in specifically for defense on Roy, and got long minutes on the night trying to hold his old teammate down. Did a pretty good job of it for stretches, but of course in the end Roy blew up to the tune of 25pts 10ast, so you can't exactly say Ime shut him down. For the first time in a lgon while got a little offense going, both spottong up and with a couple of scrappy inside hoops and fouls. Cleaned up the garbage on a KT miss at the end of the second quarter and got to the line. In the second half had another big hustle o-board ripping it away from the Blazers, then won the tip to save the possesion. Liked what he brought, and it being Ime Udoka I am going to bump him half a greade higher than I really should for the designated defender against a guy who put up 25 and 10.

Casspi ( C ) -- not one of Omri's better outings, and Westphal actually somewhat surprsingly did not seem to have great confidence in the matchups with him tonight. Udoka's big minutes for defense on Roy especially cut into things. Got off to the slow start with nothing in the first quarter, and picked up an offensive foul on the break when he should have dumped the pass. Drew two offensive fouls on Pryzbilla in the second to chase him. Added a good hustle o-board and drew the foul. Clunked a three in the 4th, but came back down the next possession and splashed one in. Struggled on defense down the strethc and got blown by by Bayless (who is much quicker). JUst not his normal saavy game.

Brockman ( B- ) -- in early and brought some good hustle and banging on the glass. Unnecessarily reached out to foul Roy out beyond the 3pt line. But Roy mercifully mised 2 of 3. Tried to contend with Pryz in the early 4th and it was unclear who was throwing around who. Just too stubby for anybody on the Blazers frontline except Howard however, and minutes were limited.

Rodriguez ( C- ) -- not the way he wanted his return to Portland to go I'm sure. Most ineffective game he's had in weeks. Lone bright point was drawing a foul behind the 3pt line by Bayless and hitting 2 of 3 -- actually was not even sure if he was shooting ut the refs gave it to him. Otherwise missed his shots and did not seem to have the control of the game he has had for us -- maybe ebtetr if he just stays out of the Pacific Northwest as despite the different uniform he seemed to regress back to his Portland days just by returning to the city. Started off the 4th quarter with a TO and lost his 4th quarter minutes as Udoka was back in for defense (that I think being the real reason for the lack of minutes -- Westphal seemed maybe even unduly scared of Roy tonight and the normal substitution pattern was disrupted trying to contain him).

Thomas ( B- ) -- came in for defense on Alddrige (he and Udoka wre he deisgnated defenders for Aldridge and Roy) and threw up a wild hook, then missed a follow layup. Got another shot blocked at the end of the 2nd quarter. Returned in the third and got a pokaway steal, but then oddly caued a turnover for us by not going after a pass in the post. Key thing though was that he played better defense on Alrdidge than did anybody else we had, althoguh that was not saying much. Drew an offensive foul on him, got that steal. Was put back in for defensive purposes at the 1:30 mark and dropped a good hard foul on Byaless at the 1:15 mark rather than letting him get a layup. Were you paying attention Spencer? Despite crappy stats (0pts 2rebs 0-3 shooting) and the marvelous incompetence on offense, for the most part was a positive for us out there, certianly compared to the man he was normally replacing.

Notes: good timeout with us down 9 early changed momentum and got the bench in -- we were tied by the end of quarter. First time we've so clearly used Udoka and Thomas as designated spot defenders on thee inside and perimeter respectively. Not rotation so much as specialists (although Kenny continues to play as the 3rd big because we just don't have one).

A global conspiracy involving the NBA, the mob, the U.N., the Illuminati, aliens, and possibly Elvis

I would have voted for this, but everyone knows the UN can't fix anything.:D

Seriously, Spencer is a big ugly virus out there and he needs to be on the bench before he brings this young team down with him.

Just got a chance to watch the game. Spencer is getting out played by Thomas most nights, which is simply pathetic. His defense on the pick and roll is as bad as I have ever seen. JT... so inconsistent, played great until the 4th and then with the pressure on he was awful. Throwing balls away, unable to get rebounds, offensive fouls, and he couldn't finish inside or out. Glad to see this team compete hard every night, but at some point we need to start winning a few of these road games.

If we could just win one, it would be a major accomplishment. Even the usually optimistic Westphal was clearly very disappointed in what happened this evening.

Ok, Coach has made some great decisions this season... but leaving Hawes in the game late instead of K9 was just stupid.

I voted decision making for the record though. JT and Hawes both played dumb down the stretch... AND I am sick and tired of seeing BOTH of them mouth off to the refs AFTER EVERY PLAY. Enough guys - make better decisions, play smart and you will earn those calls.

This team has proven that it is going to exceed most people expectations barring injury. The best part is they doing it with equal parts effort and talent, which have been in short supply the last couple years. With all that said this team can be insanely frustrating to watch come crunch time. The most frustrating thing is they don't seem to be improving much in late game situations. This team is better then their road record. I hope its simply experience that is preventing us from finishing some of these road games.

I know Spencer is only 21, but he's turning into Rasho Nesterovic with every passing game, and that won't win you any titles.
Rasho is no all star, never was but that is the stupidest thing I have heard for a while now. Rasho is one of the smartest players out there. Good on defense, has offense when called upon. Do a little google and find out what players like Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, Crish Bosh & similar have to say about him. And Kings would benefit great if they had a player like Rasho.

If the stats don't show it it doesn't mean that the player over/under produces.

Very good post by gvucko!

And Rasho won a title with the Spurs! Kings would love to have a player like Rasho on the roster. I would trade Spencer for Rasho and Pops immediately!!! Rasho is among the best centers in NBA for setting the screens and playing smart defense!

I wasn't able to watch this game
why Casspi didn't play much? and why he didn't play in the clutch time? did mistakes or just a coach decision?

You misspelled "rode Tim Duncan's coattails to..."
Do you expect Haves to be a superstar, "just" an all star or do you expect him to be a reliable big man helping superstar to be (like hopefully Evans turns to be).

No, Rasho did not won the championship singlehandedly. Nor did he have the mayor role in it. But he was an important part of that championship team.

Because every Jordan needs his Longley.

It is great if you have an allstar at C. But you have to have a strong and reliable center to win. And Rasho is both strong and reliable.

Um...no. Not even at his peak. He was a roleplayer even back when he won with the same team that later won with Nazr Mohammed at center, and then Francisco Oberto at center. They probably could have won with me at center. And now of course he's a scrub. As an aside, I would imagine the amusing outrage here has to be coming from Slovenian posters, but I don't care if you are part of the Nesterovic family, calling him either strong or reliable is a bit much. Decently skilled and could block a shot, but he was never physical.

Spencer's skills always suggested he could be something considerably more. That he could be something like a 15-17pt 8reb a night center. A smaller Big Z perhaps. But he seems to be regressing, not progressing. getting softer, not stronger, and yes there will come a time when you actually would be better off just having a roleplayer like Rasho who knows his game than a mess like Spencer fluttering about. But if that point is reached it will be considerably disappointing for a player with such an advanced skillset. He needs an intervention before he scuttles his career. Unfortunately the Maloofs are out of money and I don't think are going to be up for springing for a spare big man coach just to hold Spencer's hand.

Yes. I am Slovenian. I have nothing but respect for you Brick (having followed your contributions to this forum for year and a half now) but I do know a thing or two about BB as well.

Specers offensive skills are impressive. He may as well get the numbers you are implying. He may. But he seem to severely lack at the BB IQ and his defensive skills are... well I see none (if you don't count being a 7 footer a skill and thus getting a block here and there).

On the other hand, Rasho skill to block out, to follow players on defense, to back up fellow defender... these skills are equally impressive to Spencers offensive skill sets. And he is strong where he needs to be, on the defensive side. There are not a lot of players that can push Rasho around like every WNBA center can do to Spencer.

While I do agree that Spencer, at the age of 21, has a upside. He may become a great player. Doubtfully he can ever be a defensive presence but he may get seasoned enough to learn how to cover his weaknesses.

But in this time, comparing him to Rasho is an insult, despite Rasho (and I do agree) being a role player on his teams. A starter for most of his career but yes, a role player.

I missed the second half last night. Who was supposed to be guarding Aldridge in the second half? He was limping around on a bad ankle. Looks like they just left him alone.

We started off with Hawes, that was a disaster. Then KT. Slightly less of a disater. Then back to Hawes. For some reaosn we refused to let JT play him. At the point a guy hits 9 of his last 12 shots against you, I mean what did we have to lose there?

I love how Roy shriveled up at the end of the game when Reke was guarding him. And how Miller wanted nothing to do with going against Reke on the offensive end. Never mind what Reke does to them on offense, his defense is superb and he literally shut Miller down all game and then shut Roy down in the final 3 minutes. But alas, there was only 1 Reke on the court.

With about 5 minutes to go in the game, every possession we got both myself and my homie were yelling at the tv to get the ball to Tyreke. He was the only person who was making things happen. Those other 4 fools need to recognize that when its crunch time, get the ball to your star and let him put a hurting on the defense.

I voted for the Hawes Theory. Although the whole conspiracy thing has a nice ring to it. I certainly didn't like seeing Dick Bavetta walking out of the tunnel. The "Company Man" always seems to be around when the Kings need a fairly officiated game. Watching our bigs get mugged under the basket, and then touch fouls called on the other end all night was difficult to stomach. The Charge/Block rule was changed during this game to allow Prysbilla to be moving into players and still get the charge call. In fact, I dont think Prysbilla had many foul calls (4 called), even though he fouled everyone in reaching distance including his own team members and officials too. Unevenly called game to be sure.

But the MAIN reason the Kings lost was the total inability of Spencer Hawes to play Offense or Defense as a center for the Kings. He got killed by whoever he was guarding, and he couldn't score to save his life. What happened to Hawes's outside jumper? We all know he is as soft as a feather, but he was supposed to make up for that with an outside game. His outside game has totally disappeared!

The problem with Hawes seems to be a motivational one. He skipped out on Summer League with a lame excuse, thinking he was too good for Summer League perhaps? He seems to have the workout routine of a one Brad Miller, who he seems to be modeling his game after (without the outside jumper). He has gotten worse while everyone else has gotten better, which is disturbing because it blows the whole "The tide raises all boats" theory out of the water. The question is WHY?
