But what was his point? Sounded to me like he took a shot at the Kings saying they didnt spend the money to win a championship and if he had it to do again he wouldn't have resigned with the Kings.
Wow. Just wow...

It continually amazes me how (not necessarily just the person I quoted) are so quick to condemn someone for saying something.

Webber made a comment in reply to a specific question. He wasn't taking a shot at the Kings or the Maloofs. But people will read into whatever he says and find what they want to find.

Personally, I think this is about as big a non-issue as you could possibly find.

Note to outsiders:

Yes, the rumors are true. Sacramento is indeed a cow town.

Our current population for the county is 3 million. What you don't know, though, is that it isn't 3 million people. It's 3 million cows. They are scattered among our huge territory, and are dominating the human Sacramentans way of life with robberies, gang formation and violence.

The cows have effectively dominated our city, as one of them even miraculously ended up on the local Sacramento Kings with number 42.
We do not know how to get rid of these money-wasting creatures.

Yes, South Californians, you guessed it. Everyone who lives in Sacramento is a cow. All of them. Me too. Moooo

You know what i was wrong. Since this is such a big non-issue, maybe i should write a thank you letter to Mr. Webber for his wonderful comments. Oops, what i mean to say was mooooooooooooooo.

WHAT? Wow bro, you do seriously go out into left field sometimes. He called Sac a cow town (in reality, he was probably calling it a one-horse town) and you conclude from that that he is pissed he resigned and the Kings didn't spend enough to win a championship?

The Kings had a championship squad, plain and simple, whether they spent Yankees money or Oakland A's money they had the pieces. The Kings just missed their free throws and couldn't finish when the game was on the line. Where did you come up with that stuff broseph?

Did you listen to the whole thing? They had it on the rise guys this morning. His actually feed. He said he didn't want to call it (signing with the kings) a mistake, that that was the wrong word.

The cowtown thing was meaning less, it was the rest that has concerns.

Webber's actions have a lot more import than some words, primarily taken in a totally different context. People need to quit trying to read soooooo much into every single word that's said. Webb is involved with the Kings, he's involved with the Sacramento community, his vast black history collection is on long-term loan to the Crocker Art Museum, he has several charitable foundations at work in the area.

But hey - you want to focus on "cowtown" as a reason to dump on him, feel free. I don't think he'll lose any sleep over it, and I know I won't.

did you listen to it? What was printed was meaningless. It was the other comments that stand out more.

As what? Regrets that he might have actually gotten a ring or won a championship had he not re-signed with the Kings and chosen a different team?

What difference does it make? He played his heart out for us every single time he stepped on the court. If he has some regrets about possibly taking a different career path or whatever, who cares? He wasn't a cancer in the locker room. He was perfectly willing to finish his career as a King - remember we traded him; he didn't leave.

I just don't see the problem...or the insult. He gave his all on the court. What else really matters?

I would agree with Section 101 that the printed comments don't really capture the spirit of Webb's words, but that's generally the case when you're transcribing a conversation.

But you're right, he was traded, he didn't turn his back on the Kings, and he's been nothing but gracious toward the fans and the community. I'm obviously not as emotional about the topic as others would be, having never stepped foot in Sacramento, but I don't think there's really anything there to be offended by. If the cow town comment is particularly stinging, you have to understand that the man sweat, cried, bled and blew out ligaments on the Arco Arena hardwood. He has no ill feelings for the Arco faithful. I'm quite certain he considers his years with the Kings the best of his career.

Ok, her it is almost word for word.

"If anybodys made, I wont say mistake because that wouldnt be a good word. But if anybody has been in that position and made the choice to stay in a cow town it was me." It goes on about people bringing up that what if he went to la, ny or a bigger place "where owners want to win". "If it was me I would definately go to one of the 3 big markets where the owners would spend the money and the fans would put pressure on them."

Honestly, who cares.
Sacramento obviously isn't the metropolis or big market city NY, LA, Chicago, etc. are. Even as the capital or California, it isn't one of the 2 largest metropolitan areas in the state.

But that doesn't mean it isn't a fun place to play nba baskeball, when things are going well. Webbers best years were in Sac, and he has said that publicly a number of times. I live in the bay area and only go to Sac if I'm going to a Kings game, see my sister. or am on my way to tahoe. Sacramento simply doesn't have the attractions or nightlife of some of the larger nba markets. I don't know how anyone could argue with that. I don't think its insulting, its just the way it is.

all I can say is, if the Kings leave Sactown, all that will be left IS a cowtown. They BETTER not leave!!
Except, you know, the capital of the most productive state in the Union and one of the ten largest economies in the world...

Anyways, I don't think any fan base whom routinely brought cowbells to games during deep playoff runs can be too upset when when their former star player refers to their city as cow town, especially considering said player has praised the city on numerous occasions.

The cowtown reference to Sacramento is not a historically-based comment or observation. If you're a big city person, you might refer to someplace as a 'cowtown' if you wanted to insult that place for not being a big city. That's it. But if the metropolitan area population means anything, Sacramento is anything but a small city. (Sacramentans may have a serious inferiority complex, but that's for another discussion.) These days, Sacramento County has almost no agriculture to speak of. So calling Sacramento a cowtown, whether accurate or not, is just meant to get under your skin - ala Phil Jackson. Did it bother you? If so, you got manipulated.

Ask yourself, why would it make you angry to be called a "COW TOWN"?

The truth is that is a phrase that Phil Jackson used to manipulate the officials in the playoffs to get calls for his Flashy and Glamorous Fakers! What he was saying is that we shouldn't be getting any calls because Sacramento is a backward noplace nowhereville, and the FAKERS were the ones who deserved all the "Close" calls because they were from the 2nd largest TV market in America (just checked we are 20th now. At the time we were like 24th... Oh, and Zanesville OH is ranked 203rd!!)

So that is the reason many of us dont like the connotation of "Cow TOWN" put on Sacramento, because it more than likely caused Dick Bavetta (the company man) to make many more calls in the Fakers favor in game 6 of the 2002 playoffs. But the fact of the matter is, it doesn't matter anymore. The Lakers have won more championships since then, the Kings feel cheated as they should, but haven't gotten close to reaching that level of basketball since. Not even close. That was Sacramento's moment in the Light, and we did not succeed. Doesn't matter why. Cheated, froze up. officiating. It doesn't matter. And it will always stick in our craw that the Fancy 2nd largest TV Market Fakers got their calls and won the championship (and rubbed it in our face no less) The truth is we will always know that the 2002 Kings were the REAL champions that year. The Kings would have beaten the Nets in 5. It is a sad reality.

So Cow Town is fighting words for some. A bitter reminder for others. FOR ME it is a hope that burns in me that someday while I still live, I get to see the Kings hoist that NBA Trophy over their heads! And that Peja and Web and Bibby and all the 2002 team be allowed to touch that Trophy on TV to honor what was lost but really won. I dream about the day that happens. I know that every person in Sacramento who roots for the Kings dreams of a day of Atonement for the Kings. It would be extra special if they had to beat the Lakers to get to the Finals! But to come home for the victory parade, and to have those old players from 2002 get to touch that trophy, just to touch it... That would be one of the greatest days of my life to see that. And so I root for the Kings and hope they are on the right track, because I am getting older. I want to see that victory parade down middle of town to the capitol. I want the Maloofs to hold that trophy up and for Gavin to say "This is for 2002 AS WELL !!"

THERE! I said it! And I am not taking it back! Any FAKER FANS IN THE HOUSE? You can either admit I'm right or you can continue to live in the LIE that Kobe and Shaq live in! I really dont think THEY believe that ring is for real. They probably look at that ring a little differently than the others! I BET they DO!

Wow. I'm surprised at the amount of spiteful commentary over this remark. Cowtown? I think totally appropriate given the context, and the loving moniker given to us by Phil "The Kings are our rivals" Jackson. I remember when sheep grazed Arco. Others can probably remember when sheep roamed the concourse. Either way, it fits, and I've seen many an interview where Webber makes fond comments about the Kings fans and Sacramento. (Heck, just last week he was plugging 'his' Kings on NBATV.) Did management leave him bitter? Probably. I think there's nothing to get incensed about here.

I'll try not to insult too much, but we seriously need to work on our comprehension skills. Non issue in my book. Let's move on. Go Kings.

There are, but this sort of jab won't pull them out. The two regulars here that I know of are actually very cool people, by the way.

I suppose you're fishing for Lakers fans who scan boards for rumors and such to enrage them? That's like reverse trolling, and we don't want to hear from the people you're calling out. I agree with your general sentiment, but attacking hapless Lakers fans from the confines of our friendly board achieves very little. You should post that to a Lakers forum for maximum effect.

No one should post on a lakers forum.

Are Sacramento natives really this defensive (or, alternatively, are their inferiority complexes really this severe)?

Most Sacramentans don't give a rat's patoot about something like this. I find it interesting that so much can be made for so long over so little.

I have to make a quick comment on this topic! Chris Webber gave us all that he had the entire time he was here. Who cares what comments were made after the fact! What NBA player's dream is not to win multiple championships? If he feels that he could have done that somewhere else now, really who cares? He didn't diss us the fans so why is this such a huge issue!?

Let it go! And GO KINGS!!!

Kings fans nation, need you not be worried about Chris Webber's comments. I encourage you to emrace who you are. Were you not the one's ringing the cow bells when Sac took it to the Lakers is 2002. We loved being rednecks back then, we were proud because we had the team to back it up. Who could blame Webb for crying when he got to Sacramento, it's really depressing. But we do have passionate fans and that is what it's all about.
