The Cleveland Cavaliers have reached an agreement in principle to acquire Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal(notes), multiple sources involved in the talks told Yahoo! Sports late Thursday night.

Cleveland will send Ben Wallace(notes), Sasha Pavlovic(notes), the 46th pick in Thursday’s draft and cash to the Suns for O’Neal.

Don't really get this one from either side. I believe Shaq's deal runs out next year doesn't it? So it isn't cap relief. And while the Cavs get a big body that can still put up good numbers despite being in serious decline, it doesn't address why they lost in the playoffs, namely not closing out Hedo and Lewis and not being able to defend the pick and roll. Shaq's biggest weakness after free throws has always been his inability to defend the pick and roll.

This seems like a move to placate James, but I'm not sure it makes them much better on the court. In fact, I think Shaq will cause the same problem for LeBron that he did for Nash and Stoudamire - namely that he clogs up the paint and makes it tougher to drive the lane.

Good move gives them some presence in the paint on both sides of floor, they had zero post threat this year, if they can add a decent size 2 guard and develop one of there young pf's they will be @ least in the conference finals next year.

It's a risk for the cavs, but it could work. As for the Pacific, man--Golden State trades Crawford for nothing, Phoenix trades Shaq for nothing, the Clippers are the Clippers and we were the worst team in the league this year.

I think Wallace is going to either retire or take a buyout. Either way, the Suns will owe him less than what they owed Shaq.

Never liked this from the Cavs perspective, still don't. Its splashy, but another one of these inept moves by Ferry bringing in old guys based on past rep. Such a risk too -- if it doesn't work out, LeBron might very well say screw you. If it does work out, then Shaq retires and LeBron might still say screw you. Meanwhile Shaq's megaego is in there banging around with LeBron's locker room, and expectations are raised even higher through the roof for the casual fan that just knows the Shaq name, rather than game. At the very least if they fall short again its probably curtains for Mike Brown, assuming Shaq doesn't kill him early the way he did Van Gundy.

If Lebron is gonna leave this wont be why, a motivated shaq with LBJ is scary.

I don't get this trade at all...
It's all expiring contracts, I think?

The Suns get Pavlovich, who I think is terrible, a buy-out, and a late 2nd rounder?
Does this save the Suns money?

The Cavs get a lane clogger who may restrict LeBron's cutting ability?
I don't know...
On paper, LeBron + Shaq looks damn sexy...

In real life?
Im not sure.

It will be an interesting experiment, at least.

A motivated Shaq is still on the wrong side of 35. He played well for old Shaq last year and his team missed the playoffs.

And yes, if this fails its going to leave a big ole stinkpile complete with finger pointing, a fired coach, and possibly a fired GM. That's a situation rife for your superstar to think hey, things just have to be greener someplace else.

The Cavs are trying to recreate the Kobe-Shaq effect. The Heat did it and won a championship so why can't the Cavs? Yeah, Shaq has been in decline the last few years but he actually had a pretty impressive year last year so their is no reason he still can't contribute. I still hate his dumb *** though.

this could work if shaq comes ready to play. it also gives shaq and big z a much needed rest during the season. neither has everhad a good back up to give them a rest. but i dont get what the cavs are trying to do, they still dont have a starting pf. the cavs need to make one more trade to get a pf or sign rasheed in the offseason.

but either way lebron is still the best player in basketball, period. oh and why is this in the personnel section? is this team so bad that we post other teams personnel moves in our forum? damn, how low can we go?

The suns didnt have LBJ, and Amare was out, this is not a move for a 5 year stretch this is a move for 1 year and lets see, and thats what Lebron is looking at , what will they do to help him get that ring and guess what they only have one year to show him. Shaq scoring in the post, getting the other team in foul trouble, and presence in the paint this makes sense for one year, they gave up nothing for him i say why not. The locker room thing though i do agree could be interesting, but i think in this stage of his career Shaq realizes this is Lebrons team and now hes the sidekick.

I like this for the Cavs. Don't necessarily think it makes them better, but they lost nothing and added a big name to try and show LeBron that they want to get him a championship.

PS why is this in the personnel moves forum??

I think the Cavs are forcing things. They proved that they were one of the elite teams this year and they cruised through the first 2 rounds of the playoffs before they ran into a hot Orlando team. I think they should have stayed put and gave it another shot next year. Shaq is washed up and I think he's just going to get in the way of Lebron.

This is a desperation move by Ferry. Cavs do not need Shaq - they need a solid PF. I don't see this helping Cleveland. Shaq is not half the player he once was.

And hopefully that place is Sacramento :D

Steve Kerr really is a genius. You would think with such a huge ender he would have gotten younger players.

I really don’t like this trade for the Cavs, but if Shaq is motivated enough and is going to keep himself in excellent shape this year – who knows...I also think with Shaq’s big body in the middle it would be harder for Lebron to have easy access at the rim.

I don't like this trade at all. But if the Cavs do win it all, I like the message it sends... that the 3 championships were Shaq's (and Bavetta's) and not Kobe's, and that any good guard/forward (Wade, Lebron) paired with Shaq can win it all. Any real basketball fan knows that this isn't really the case, but in Kobe's kobe-centric world view, it will linger in the back of his head. Good enough for me :)

The SUNS save about $10 million with this trade when you include the luxury tax also. Thats a good chunk of change in this economy. They know they weren't going to win anything with Shaq.

Shaq definitely makes the Cavs a better team. Assuming big Z stays, they both don't have to play that many mins. Shaq is old, but don't forget that he will be very motivated now that he's on a championship contending team. Remember towards the end of the season... Shaq willed the Suns to beat the lakers by himself. They played without Nash that game. Shaq was playing his best ball this yr since his first yr with the Heat.

Even this past season, Shaq defends Dwight Howard 1 on 1 while the Magic runs double teams on Shaq every single time. That makes a huge difference got the Cavs. The reason they couldn't close out on Rashard Lewis and Hedo is that they either had to double Howard or let him get a dunk or foul. With Shaq, they can defend Howard straight up and the Magic players won't get wide open shots anymore. On the other end, Shaq can draw double teams and give Mo Will and West etc some open shots. Good deal for the Cavs since they didn't really give up much.
