Houston Game Postponed

#1
NEW YORK, September 11, 2008 – The Women’s National Basketball Association game scheduled for Friday evening, September 12, between the Sacramento Monarchs and Houston Comets at Reliant Arena in Houston has been postponed due to severe weather conditions anticipated as a result of Hurricane Ike.
The WNBA is working toward rescheduling the game for Monday evening, September 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Reliant Arena. A formal decision will depend upon a variety of logistics and an assessment of the outcome of the storm in the Houston area.

Thanks for sharing the information.

I have some questions about the scheduling change:

(1.) Did the team leave for Houston already, prior to the postponement?

(2.) Will the Monarchs/Silver Stars game in San Antonio take place on Saturday, as scheduled?

I wonder if the team will have to turn back from Houston, or relocate somewhere else in Texas, or travel straight to San Antonio, before heading back to Houston.

What I'm hoping the league is considering re: whether or not the Monarchs travel to Texas to play one game or two, is whether or not that game against Houston has any bearing on seedings for Los Angeles or Sacramento. I can sorta see the logic of playing a game between San Antonio and Sacramento even if San Antonio has clinched the #1 seed and the #3 seed is perhaps clinched tonight too.

What I can't understand is having the Monarchs sit somewhere in Texas to play a game on Monday somewhere and not get home until Tuesday - if that game has no bearing at all on anything.

the Comet's game has the potential of being the last Comet's game, ever ... ; ( ... so Comet fan's have a special interest in the game being played ...

on the other hand, it is a hurricane. and there is an evacuation ... if there is nothing at stake, best to stay as much and as far out of the way as possible ...

Not to sound insensitive or anything...but I get that it could be their last game ever, but that's not enough of a reason to make the Monarchs hang around for more days and put their playoff preparation in a hole. That's probably why they're trying to figure out how they could make it work tho.

And that's just considering the basketball side of this, they have zero idea until Ike hits what condition Houston or the surrounding areas will be in to even consider playing that game in a place where Comets fans can come see it. If the choice is the Monarchs coming back home and that game being canceled or that game being moved to Dallas or Austin and hope enough of the Houston fan base can make it, I'll vote to cancel it. If it can be played in Houston? That's about the only reason I could see for the Monarchs hanging around to play it, and even then I'd want them to play that game at noon, so they could get back here at a reasonable time. They could potentially not be back here until Tuesday now.

If the game has no significance for this season, the Monarchs should come back to California. Let the Comets and their fans celebrate or remember the franchise's history some other way. Or, I dunno...the league should perhaps run the team one more year until it has a solid new home for it.

While we've got a thread open to discuss Ike, and the Comets....just thought I'd pass along that I've checked in with CometsLuv4Play and he wanted to let folks know he is doing well and is presently in Dallas on business and therefore out of harms way for the next few days.

Well, as I sit and watch KHOU coverage on DirectTV, I just saw that the Houston Texans, who rescheduled their football game from Sunday to Monday night, have now canceled the game altogether due to damage that Reliant Stadium suffered overnight.

Reliant Arena is in the same complex.

The Astros are still assessing their situation, since Minute Maid Park hasn't had any damage - although areas around it downtown have.

This game is looking more and more like it will be canceled regardless of the playoff implication.

I agree, Sacramento needs to win tonight for a variety of reasons, but it makes Sunday and Monday sooooo complicated. I would rather Sac be able to jump on a plane, come home and get ready for Thursday night. Is there any way that the Comets can come to Sacramento Monday night, and play as a road team?

If it has playoff implications, I think they'll play it but it may not be in Houston. If it doesnt have implications, the Monarchs should be sent back to California the minute it no longer has meaning.

From what coach said in the Bee article, my guess is that she'd rather play the Comets somewhere, because that helps them prepare more than anything they could do in practice.

The game might have some playoff implications, presuming that the Monarchs win tonight against SASS, and L.A. loses to Seattle tomorrow (which will be shown on ABC-TV). It is quite possible the Monarchs could even sneak their way into third place, ahead of the Sparks.

WNBA.com is showing it at 7 p.m. Eastern on Monday in San Marcos. Game will be over before I can get home. :(

I don't think the game tips @ 7pm EDT, I think it's 7pm CDT. They announced the radio broadcast as 5pm here

Well then, I hope they fix that on their site.

Edit: I went and double-checked WNBA.com and they show it as 7 p.m. Eastern. So, we might want to be ready to check it on the radio at 4. If it's not there, try again at 5. :p

I personally don't understand why this game should be played. Where is San Marcos? Is it close enough for Houston fans to travel? I understand that coach would rather play, but man, for this team to play Monday, travel back to Sac on Tuesday, only to have one day of preparation seems a stretch. I would hope the league would consider playing Game One on Friday, rather than Thursday.

The explanation given on the pregame show this afternoon was that it is not only about implications of seedings for the Sparks and Monarchs, it was about playoff seedings throughout the remainder of the playoffs in determinations of home court advantage etc...in whatever scenarios could play out down the road. The other piece to this, which I had not considered (but don't know that it makes me care any more about the 34th game being played) is that they also do need Sacramento and Houston to play this game for draft positioning purposes. The league had every intent on playing this game somewhere all along - the decision apparently was on where there was a facility available.

San Marcos is an hour north of San Antonio. From the press release the push appears to be to get not only Houston fans who already are ticketed for this game but also to entice the student body @ TSU as well as San Antonio fans to make the trek.

If they set the games as they have in the past, the Monarchs should host the Silverstars in a 1-4 matchup on Friday. It appears the 2-3 games in the past have been played on the first day. Even if the Monarchs didn't wind up as the 4 seed, I would be hard pressed to think that the league would not have pushed them to a Friday game.

me too ...

well, i think this game sucks too ... becasue of the playoff game on thursday ... staying out there, and travelling back ... it's an unfair disadvantage for the M's ...

for "draft" order, just give them each .5 of a win, and .5 of a loss and fuhgeddaboudit ...

the whole season is about getting to the playoffs, the playoffs should not take a back seat to hurricane altered regular season games ... ; (

nonetheless, i will be there on thursday !!!!
