Monarchs Say Good Bye to Latangela Atkinson

#3
Bummer! I actually thought she was a young raw talent, very athletic, and wasted all the time on the bench. :( She actually did quite well overseas in the off season. Personally, I much prefer her to Kim Smith...

I wonder what Whiz is up to--clearing space for whom??? Sharnee Zoll? Is DeMya ready to come back??? Oh please, please, please:)

I had not heard anything about Atkinson being waived until I just read Purple Reign's original post on this thread. I was not online the entire afternoon.

I was at the game tonight, and had wondered why was Ticha yelling (on the P.A. system) about "We love you, Tangie!" right after the game. At the time, I had no idea. I was thinking, "Did something bad happen to La'Tangela Atkinson? Or was it about ex-Monarchs Tangela Smith?"

But now that it's done, I am also wondering who will be filling in La'Tangela's place?

Wasted in the sense we didn't have it this year? sure.

Wasted it in the sense we missed out on somebody? I don't know how different this roster would have looked. Franklin maaaaaaaaaaaybe is Zoll, or they use that pick to get the player they eventually got via waivers Kelly. Otherwise I don't see a big shift.

There's a pretty significant difference between Sharnee Zoll and A'Quonesia Franklin. We settled for Franklin because she was available. If Zoll had been available during training camp, Franklin would still be looking for a job. There wasn't any interest in her outside of us, and we were only interested because we needed somebody to fill that spot. I'm aware of Zoll's difficulties in transitioning thus far, but Franklin wouldn't have fared any better...and maybe would've fared worse in those same situations.

So yeah, I'd say not having a second round pick in this past draft hurt. Instead of having a back-up true point guard that the coach can trust, we're back to square one with using Kara as the back-up. You don't want to put too much on her plate because we need her to score, but that's exactly what's been going on since early June.

I agree that Franklin/Zoll are two different choices, but I don't think it's a slam dunk that Zoll would have been here if they had the pick with Kelly still on the board and Beck/Zoll dropping.

I think the front office and staff always had the plan that Lawson was going to back up at the point.

I disagree completely. With Haynie gone, we needed a guard that Jenny would actually play meaningful minutes at the back-up spot (she soured on Haynie rather quickly, but most teams play first rounders anyway). We needed someone she could actually trust. Coming into the season, we knew that Lawson would be a starting guard because the roster lacked offensive weapons. We were banking on there being a decent guard at #38 so that we wouldn't have to make a deal to get the better guard.

The Monarchs settled for Franklin. We've settled before. Rather than package two first-round picks and an ancillary player and move up the draft in 2006, we took two second-rounders with those picks and are paying the price two years later. Robinson and Smith are not Augustus, Pondexter, Young, and Dupree, and they aren't even Monique Currie.

Beck was never under serious consideration. She might've been selected had she dropped to #38, but there wasn't a high demand for her services because of where she played, how poorly she performed in the NCAA Tournament as a senior, and the spot-on comparisons to Erin Grant.

Kelly is here because we desperately needed a post when DeMya went down (not before, which is when the draft took place). She lasted on the draft board as long as she did because she isn't close to 6'3, the height she was listed at in college. We didn't need her prior to DeMya going down because we were getting Harper in the first round.

agree with you 100%

If we had the 2nd round pick (instead on Tangio) we would be using that yo get a PG likely, Zoll or whoever.

Kelly became more needed because of DeMya.

We made poor moves while the rest of the league continued to get better. sigh.

Well....Last time I looked Zoll was yet again available, after being cut from 2 different teams.

We cut Atkinson.. and as far as I know, we can pick up another player.

Do we sign her?

worth a shot IMO. She was cut from 2 teams with quite a bit of backcourt depth (LA and MIN) so since we have little PG depth, I think it's worth a shot. This AQ experiment isn't exactly panning out at the moment.

That's a little misleading, mitzukosan. She wasn't going to make a roster ahead of Candace Parker's "Mini Me", and she wasn't going to crack the rotation of a team with two lottery picks at point guard (three when they play Wiggins there). She's been placed in some unfortunate situations thus far, and the average rookie point guard does not succeed in those situations.

Having said that, I'd work her out for a few days before inking her. It can't hurt (especially since we have Allen on the team who doesn't even play), and it could certainly help if Jenny is willing to play her.

I would like to see if she can play on this team and in this league before someone else does and benefits at our expense. What happens if LA decides next year it made a mistake, they take her back, and she succeeds there?

There was an extreme buzz going around with regard to Zoll before the draft. Many thought we should have drafted her,

Hummmm cut by 2 teams already? Did she just not fit into the chemistry of the two previous teams , or is she a legit player just waiting to be picked up by a team that can really use her?

At this point, I'm willing to gamble.

Lord knows we aren't making the playoffs.

Normally, I would not be in a hurry to pick up someone who has been cut by 2 different teams. Having said that, I also think that maybe she was placed into a couple of tough situations. I think they should at least check her out.

She passed Nikki Teasley (UNC) and Dawn Staley (UVA) on the ACC's all-time assists list, finished top 5 in school history in steals and top 10 in 3-pointers made. The buzz, however much it was, was warranted considering the ACC's standing in college basketball while she was a player.

I'd say she is the latter.

She was not going to beat out Bobbitt despite outplaying her for much of the preseason. Candace Parker befriends Bobbitt, and the team owners had their eye on Bobbitt during the draft even though she wasn't invited to attend, and teams usually don't keep multiple rookie point guards who aren't first round picks.

Minnesota picked her up off waivers because they thought about trading Lindsey Harding once she healed up. Remember that Harding was adamant this past offseason about wanting to be traded out of Minnesota because she did not want to be involved in a battle for the starting point guard spot with Quinn. The Lynx didn't get any reasonable offers because of Harding's injury history (stress fractures in college, ACL as a rookie, knee cap fracture as a second-year player), and it looks like they're stuck with her. There was no need to keep Zoll if they didn't plan on playing her, and a team can't play someone else's third-rounder over their own #1 overall pick for political reasons.

Had Minnesota not claimed her, she'd either be here, in Chicago, or in Washington and very much still on one of those three rosters.

At this point, I'm willing to gamble.
Me too. It honestly can't hurt.

Lord knows we aren't making the playoffs.
Don't know about that one yet because Phoenix and Minnesota are more pretenders than contenders, but man...does Seattle look good all of a sudden.

I'll see where Seattle is when they have to play without LJ and away from Key. They are crushing Minny tonight at home and I can't figure out how except that somebody besides LJ and Bird has shown up - there has been a Gearlds sighting.

The Monarchs damn well better atone for the freaking game they choked up to the Storm on the road. Which might make me forget all the other ones they choked up this year too...When you come out the gates jumping on somebody's heart? Finish the damn job...um, damnit! cough..
I'm really over that loss.

;)

Oh yeah...she is leaving for the Olympics soon! I forgot all about that.

Yeah, Seattle is meat without her. They're probably experiencing a heightened sense of urgency to win now and just hold on until the Aussie phenom returns. I say let's spoil that plan starting July 8. ;)

With Phoenix and Minnesota both losing tonight, we aren't far off the pace for that final playoff spot. Grrr...we should've split those games in Texas.
