I disagree completely. With Haynie gone, we needed a guard that Jenny would actually play meaningful minutes at the back-up spot (she soured on Haynie rather quickly, but most teams play first rounders anyway). We needed someone she could actually trust. Coming into the season, we knew that Lawson would be a starting guard because the roster lacked offensive weapons. We were banking on there being a decent guard at #38 so that we wouldn't have to make a deal to get the better guard.
The Monarchs settled for Franklin. We've settled before. Rather than package two first-round picks and an ancillary player and move up the draft in 2006, we took two second-rounders with those picks and are paying the price two years later. Robinson and Smith are not Augustus, Pondexter, Young, and Dupree, and they aren't even Monique Currie.
Beck was never under serious consideration. She might've been selected had she dropped to #38, but there wasn't a high demand for her services because of where she played, how poorly she performed in the NCAA Tournament as a senior, and the spot-on comparisons to Erin Grant.
Kelly is here because we desperately needed a post when DeMya went down (not before, which is when the draft took place). She lasted on the draft board as long as she did because she isn't close to 6'3, the height she was listed at in college. We didn't need her prior to DeMya going down because we were getting Harper in the first round.
