All Time Favorite King

I've got a lot of favorites, but when I try to sort them out, three names definitely rise to the top -- and they're the same ones ovrush picked.

First there was Mitch Richmond because of those games when we'd be down 10 points or more (pretty much every game it seemed) and you knew he was going to get hot and drain a few threes in a row to make the game exciting right to the end. We still lost most of them, but he brought hope whenever he toed up to the three point line. When I first started watching basketball regularly, Mitch was the Kings and it was always a rollercoaster ride. A thrill right to the end.

Second was Jason Williams. I have yet to see a more exciting basketball player than JWill in his years with the Kings. Yes he would throw up ill-advised three pointers with regularity, but he would also make the most unbelievable "I can't believe I just saw that" passes in every game. And he never did the same thing twice. It was like he was constantly inventing something new. I felt so lucky that he was on our team and I got to watch him. I was really sad when he got traded for Bibby. Bibby was awesome for us, but basketball was never as fun as it was during JWill's years. I don't know what happened in Memphis, but it's a great tragedy that JWill disappeared from the NBA forefront because he was incredible right from his first game and I still don't understand how he never became the star he should have been.

And third, during the championship years my favorite player was Doug Christie. I think he went unnoticed a lot of the time, and his talent really only shined when paired with great players like Webber, Vlade, Peja, and Bibby -- but he was our heart and soul out there. And one of the smartest basketball players I've ever seen too. He played terrific defense all-game, every game and his passing was fantastic. I can't count how many times he would laser passes in the perfect spot for a Peja layup. Not flashy passes, just quick effective ones with pinpoint accuracy. When games were close he'd routinely turn it up a notch and pick off passes for easy buckets to put us ahead. It's hard to single out any one player from those teams because they were such a cohesive unit, but Doug was the unsung hero and I always respected him for his hard work and selflessness. The Webber trade was a big big deal, but it wasn't until Doug got traded that that era of Kings basketball really ended for me.

Current Kings, I don't know. Still undecided I guess.

Richmond. Toiled for years on a team w/ no culture of success. Was told on his first day by Jim Les, "Welcome to Hell". Had less help than Danny Manning did w/ the Clippers in the early 90s(!) When there were rumors that Eddie Jones might go for Richmond in 97, Jones was petrified.

Rock, indeed.

'The Team' was amazing, something I hope we get to see the magic of again someday, so much better then the sum of it's parts, but if I had to pick a player, it would be Webber, followed closely by Vlade.
Currently, it's Kevin.

If that isnt the truth! The only 2 years we really competed was 94-96 when we had Brian Grant/Michael Smith/Sarunas and the gang...and we still couldnt get to .500. At least Manning had Ron Harper, Charles Smith(who they got because of the GREAT Derek Smith trade with us), Loy Vaught and a young Officer Polynice. Oh well, Mitch is definitely #4 on my list of fav's for sure...he was responsible for getting 'The Team'(as some people like to call it) started with his trade for Webber. Mitch was a 'Rock' in every definition of the word.

I think it's got to be Webber for me, but it's surprisingly close between Webb and the rest of "the team" that will always have a place in my heart. Dang, those were special times, and there are things I love about all of them...

Webb - his passion for the game, his refusal to give up, his belief in the team, his ability to get the fans excited, the way he played when he was healthy, and (sigh) his smile

Vlade- Vlade was just, well, Vlade. The way he was the leader of the team in most important ways. Watching him play was amazing. The hidden strength behind the team, I really believe that team wouldn't have worked without him.

Christie - A true scrapper, Doug Christie lived and breathed Sacramento basketball. A true warrior who never gave up, and who showed that hard work truely can pay off. I don't think any player on the Kings ever worked harder than DC.

Bibby- for great shot after great shot, and for stepping up big when it counted. As the clock wound down Bibby's hands were the ones I wanted the ball in for that desperation three.

Peja- Those days wouldn't have been the same without hearing "Peja for THREEEEEEEE". Peja's shots were amazing, and watching them made for dang good basketball.

BJax- not a starter, but a spark plug from the bench that sometimes made all the difference.

sigh.... those players are really all my favorites. Webb holds a slight edge, but all in all, those players were part of something very special and unforgettable.

Wayman was my favorite while he was here. The discovery of the "Tizzy" rules kind of soured me to his time with the Kings. i.e. "Hurt toe, don't go" etc.
Yeah, but Wayman brought it every night regardless. The Tizzy Flip and that sweet fall away turnaround were awesome and almost unguardable. Oh, and he can play a mean bass guitar, too...I remember watching the filming of the video for his song 'Dont Give Up'(I think I still have the autographed vinyl record, too) at the Safety Center...that song featured one of the guys from the group Tag Team(Whoomp There it Is!):p I had the pleasure of interviewing him like 8 years ago, he's definitely one of the nicest, humble guys I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

As a Kid....
1) Dwayne Schintzius (yeah, you heard me right)
2) Lionel Simmons

Of all time...
Between Doug Christie and Chris Webber. It's hard to be a Kings fan and not say Chris because he put us on the map. I loved Christie though for his hard work night in and night out. Plus my style of play was like his.

I posted here but it was the wrong thread. Anyway, I'll just ad quickly it's nice to see Doug Christie get support since he was often the least mentioned of the 5 starters from the glory days.

I think that might just be the 1st time I've ever read Peja and beast in the same sentence:eek:.

Here I'll fix it for you: "that team was awesome, all they did was win until they ran into the tougher part of their schedule, their players got injured(Miller injured his elbow and missed 7-8 games IIRC, Bobby broke his wrist I think), guys got tired because they were playing so many minutes, they tried to integrate their best player back into the mix, and Peja went soft like he always does when it counts(as I type this he's probably throwing up an airball from the corner of NO's practice facility), etc.

That team won as many games as they did because of Rick.
Thank You!! Couldn't have said that better myself, LMAO! He'd be my choice for most overrated King of all time...:p

Guess I should submit my list:

1) Reggie Theus- Was told I looked like him in the 7th grade and he was my man ever since ;) Also I believe one of the most underrated guards ever. Never had any players around him. And took loads of crap from EVERYONE basically because he was a good lookin cat who could ball! Also...kicked Juanita Jordan to the curb when he was the original king of Chicago...:D

2) Tie (C-Webb/Mike Bibby) We weren't taken serious until they were BOTH here.

3) Mitch- I feel bad putting him at 3 because for the LONGEST time...he was the only thing I had to brag about. LOL

Peja was ranked in the top 5 for 4th quarter FG% during the 2003-04 season. While I agree that he was weak when it came to physical play, he certainly was not soft when it came to the clutch
