Bibby headed to Atlanta

why are we cutting Williams and keeping Wright. didn't Jusint beat him out for the roster spot last season?

No, this is Lorenzen Wright, former starting C in Memphis etc. Used to be a solid NBA big man, but seems to have slowed as he passeed 30. You are thinking of Loren Woods.

Lots of irony in this trade... Mike Bibby to possibly return to Sacramento to face the Kings as starting guard for the Atlanta Hawks as soon as next Wednesday. In the summer of 1988 the "greatest point guard in the history of the Sacramento Kings" was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. Who could that be? One, Reggie Theus...

Can someone with the espn insider please paste the Hollinger article about the trade on this thread...
No, they can't. Please reference our tips for posting. ESPN Insider requires a paid subscription to view. Pasting it here would violate their copyright provisions.

Sorry...

why are we cutting Williams and keeping Wright.
Nobody knows any reason. The only one I can even guess at is:

Waive Wright and Johnson, you gotta write them checks for the rest of the year now. They get paid $6.1M a year. Waive the kids, who only get paid $1.4M a year, and the Maloofs get to write smaller checks today and delay those bigger ones for a month or two.

Otherwise, it makes no sense whatsoever.

Oh thanks for clearing that up for me. Mike was my favorite player for a long time. Can somebody explain to me why this trade isn't upsetting me much?

It's like that car you had that no longer runs quite as fast, burns a little more oil, has faded paint, a couple of tears in the upholstery, etc. You still have the fond memories but you really want that brand-new car and getting rid of the old one is the only way to make room in the garage for the new one.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not. Bibby of the last two years has showed a distinct decline in his skills. Now if we go back three years, we have a stud. Unfortunately that was three years ago.

HUGE salary cut.

the Kings are looking at about a 51mil salary hit for 2008-09 if they let Artest walk. That would allow the Kings to re-sign Beno. I think the Maloofs didn't want to take a luxury tax hit next year for a .500 team so they extinguished Bibby's salary, they can re-sign Beno w/o having to worry about him and Bibby making 20mil of the 60mil cap. This trade totally makes sense.

It's obvious the Kings are going in a different direction. Beno will probably be our new starting PG, and now I can see the Kings drafting Collison, Augustin, or Mayo to back him up for a couple years.

Now if Williams plays like poop than I can see Petrie go with a PF in the draft, and we are back at ground zero w/ less hit on the cap.

yeah I guess your right. That plus I enjoyed watchin Beno play and Bibby came back and was ice cold shooting and I kinda missed Beno.

It upsets the hell out of me too. Our Turnover/assists were MUCH improved with Bibby in the lineup..

But from the Maloofs POV it's a great trade. Bibby has one more year after this one right? at 14.5 mil. The Kings as a team would be at about 63mil worth of salaries next year if we kept Bibby. Since trading him for expirings (and Shelden) we in essence shed about 10 of that 14 million, and now are in position to re-sign Beno w/o taking a luxury tax hit. Plus, next year Bibby won't be helping us win any championships right? So the Maloofs would be taking that luxury hit next year all for a .500 at best team. So from their point of view it's a great trade..

All that being said I will miss Bibby :(

So basically Bibby for Shelden Williams, a 2nd, and expirings? Not terribly exciting, and I'll miss Bibby, but I'm glad it's a done deal. (And I'm glad the Kings didn't end up with someone like Nene whose contract is exactly the type we're trying to get rid of.) It also increases the likelihood that Artest will be traded before the deadline's over.

It's interesting that the Hawks, with a worse record than the Kings despite playing in the East, is close enough to making the playoffs that they're willing to make this deal just because...they're in the East.

Good luck to Bibby, and I hope he plays well, but I hope the Hawks miss the playoffs so we can get a slightly higher 2nd rounder.

Well I think this was type of trade Geoff was looking for, a young player with potential at PF, two playable backups for Beno with Expiring contracts, an emergency big man with expiring contract, and a 2nd round draft pick to boot!!

Everyone has been saying lets commit to a rebuild, well one more artest trade and we
are on the path to a serious rebuild. Lets hope we get a 1st Rounder or a young starting PF for Artest? Oh well one can hope!!!

You know the old NBA saying:

You never trade young and big for old and small.
This is not on the scale of Richmond for Webber but nevertheless we got a freakin' steal! Shelden Williams, for all his fault, is still a potential double-double big man who hasn't reached his ceiling yet. I've been eyeing Shelden Williams for a while but I never thought the Hawks is dumb enough to give him up for an aging sub-40% shoot-first PG.

Bibby, thank you for the memories, but it's time for you to go. I'll be rooting for the Hawks to make the PO.

GP, what can I say, great job once again!

Yup, that's one of the first things I brought up when talking about this trade with my roomie. Oh, and you cant forget we ALSO traded another former Kings great PG to Atlanta in one Mr. Kenny Smith, too.:D

The Rebuild FINALLY Begins!

It's about time Petrie cut the cord. It took him 2 years to finally say, "Uncle!". There's no question he could have done this sooner, but at least he finnally did it instead of wallow in no-man's land for time eternity. The Kings are going to be no worse off this year because of the move and they get salary cap flexibility down the line. Now we can stop pretending about the freaking "refurbish" and get on with life. This should be the first domino to drop with others to follow. Don't get your hopes up on Williams - even Reynolds doesn't like the guy, although his viewpoint may dramatically change now he's in a Kings uniform.

Considering it was because of Directv that I fell in love with the Kings in 1999, can I be considered for Executive of the Year for having the cold-heareted foresight to cancel my Directv NBA package before the season started?

Ahem...

Beno Udrih
Mikki Moore
Sheldon Williams
Lorenzen Wright
Tyrone Lue
Spencer Hawes
Quincy Douby

Sounds like a bad Hawk team. Do people still pay for those courtside seats???

The first step to rebuilding is demolition. That's what Petrie is doing - breaking up the so-called "core". More to follow....
No argument from me that this was demolition, but the "More to follow" isn't something I can accept on faith anymore. I've been waiting on the "more to follow" from the Webber trade for years. Similarly waiting for the trading away of bigs that was the only sensible outcome of signing Mikki. So, until/unless there is some miraculous follow up, I am going to have to assume that this is just another cost cutting measure, another Skinner for Potapenko, or Keon for nothing sort of deal. I'll be happy if that's incorrect, we have until Friday to find out.

I would rather watch a truly rebuilding team with the hope of a future championship run than a marginal playoff team year-in and year-out.

Also, it may surprise you to learn that there are those of us that also watch the games independent of whether or not our record is good or bad, or what players are on the team. We happen to just love the team.

Word is that Justin and Dahntay are being cut to make room for the new players from the Bibby trade.
So, Justin Williams plays his heart out the other night and played a role as a game changer on defense, and for his efforts he gets cut for a bunch of expiring nobody's? It doens't make any sense. I mean Dahntay, ok he was signed in an emergency back up role, he knew his time with the team could end at any time.

Theus was talking about how hard Justin has been working in practice etc. Why not cut one of the guys coming in?

No. We just cut a lot of costs. We also just became an older team. That is not rebuilding.

Those "older" people are coming off the books at the end of the year, and clearing 9.5 million off the books, and removes what we would have to pay Bibby next year. The "getting older" is short term. If that's all you see, then you aren't looking at the big picture.

I don't think it's anything like the Webber deal or the other deals you mentioned. This is the watershed event that lets everybody know that Petrie and the Maloofs have thrown in the towel. There is no more playoff fantasy, no more refurbish rather than rebuild. It's demoliton, which will give us nothing this year, but gives the potential to start doing something next year in FA (unlike the Webber deal). Petrie is basically unloading Bibby for expiring contracts. There is no going back now. Now Petrie is fully committed to doing other deals to unload veteran players for salary cap room/picks/young talent. Artest is next, and it wouldn't surprise me to see Miller go either, though not necessarily this year. The only "miracles" we will see from this will possibly be in the following years. It does nothing to improve us this year, but you've got suck it up now to get a better team down the line.

On another subject, what I wonder, is: Will Theus finally play the young guys now???? There is absolutely no point in playing A. Johnson over Douby, as an example. If Theus does so, it tells me that he is still participating in a fantasy that Petrie and Maloofs have obliterated from their minds.

This is a good trade for both teams. Atlanta can now compete for the play-off spot again (been on a losing streak). Kings get a lot of expiring contracts.

Just to clear somes stuff (coming from a Kings fan whose in Atlanta): I know you all wish we got a 1st rounder, but Hawks do not have it this year, Suns have their 1st round pick. About Shelden Williams... he might have potential, but hawks fan had gave up on him, and with the aquisition of Al Horford whose doing well for them, Shelden did not get minutes this year and for years to come if he stayed with Atlanta.

About the players you got:
Anthony Johnson, he's old, but can still play. Will make a great backup for Beno.
Tyronne Lue, he's explosive at times, and will be a great energy booster.
Lorenzen Wright, he's hampered with injuries, but from the minutes he got this year he'd been solid.
Shelden Williams, been useless so far...

As far as Dahntay Jones and Justin Williams being cut goes, it could actually allow them to be picked up by teams headed for the playoffs. And Petrie has done that kind of thing before.

It could also be related to cash flow.

As someone else has said, Dahntay Jones was an emergency acquisition and Justin Williams was good for a couple of ohs and ahs but probably not much more.

When you're blowing up the clown the way we saw today there's bound to be some collateral damage. Justin could do one or two things but the list of things he couldn't do was extensive. Although he may have been a fan favorite, he wasn't going to be a cornerstone of this franchise going into the future. Cutting him now simply took away the suspense of later.
