Report: Artest doesn't want to leave friends in Sacramento

The Ron Artest-to-the-Knicks trade winds have been downgraded by the player himself to a slight breeze.

Artest told the New York Post that he wants to remain with Sacramento and retire as a King. Artest's comments contradicted statements his agent made last week, indicating that his client, a Queens native who attended St. John's, wanted to return home.

"I really want to finish my career in Sacramento because of my relationship with some of the players," Artest said, according to the Post. "I want to finish with Sacramento. I feel attached to Sacramento. I want to be their franchise player."

Artest also said he was told by Kings general manager Geoff Petrie that he would not be traded, and Artest told Petrie he probably would not opt out of his contract after next season, the Post reported.
"Ron is going to be a King," Petrie said Monday, denying he has had any conversations with the Knicks' front office. "People are having conversations with themselves."

Artest has two years left on his contract and can opt out next summer, but he told the Post that was unlikely.

"I'm not looking to break the bank. I probably won't opt out," he told the newspaper. "I'm not chasing the money too much. I'm worried about winning more than opting out. For $8.5 million [in 2009-2010] I won't complain."

Artest, a mercurial forward and former Pacer best known for his role in instigating Indiana's brawl with Detroit Pistons fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills in 2004, is coming off a troubled 2006-07 season. After being accused of animal cruelty, which did not result in charges, he was arrested and charged in March with assaulting his wife. Artest pleaded no contest to the charge in May and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and a 10-day work project.

He finished the 2006-07 season averaging 18.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Well GM's have told players before that they wont be traded then traded them.

It looks like we will stand pat and allow time to (cross your fingers) raise our players stock.

hows this for a time line, Talks start between NY and SAC over trading Artest, Talks end, Isiah comes out and says no David Lee or Balkman, Petrie says "Artest you will not be traded" looks like NY might have been the only real shot this off-season. Maybe at the deadline.

Sure we might end up making a move or two. but then again sounds like we arent using the mid level, and really who wants any of our players other than the ones that we are un willing to trade IE Martin, Garcia, Williams, Hawes, and i guess Artest ?

Well- the "X won't be traded and wants to retire a King," is pretty much the kiss of death around here. I now expect a 100% chance that he is gone by October

There is a difference here between the past and now. When Petrie said there was no trade in the works one day and traded Webber the next, he never said that Webber would not be traded. He was just trying to keep trade talks quiet.

If Geoff Petrie comes out and says Ron Artest is not getting traded, then I believe him. Geoff is a guy of his word. If he specifically mentions a players name and says he is not getting traded, then trades him he will lose credibility with every player that is on the team now, and play that ever plays on a team that he is the GM for in the future. He would not do that.

I think that pretty much ensures that Bibby would be the trade piece at this point.

---Note: On a side note, from thread that got closed yesterday. I never got a chance to respond. When I said Tuesday I meant Wednesday. I was thinking one thing and typed another, because I was thinking about my Director meeting today. Also when I said the market doesn't get cookin until the 11th, I was talking about the moratorium.

I got picked apart in the next post. No need to get uppity over such small details folks. I think my point got across.

I was excited about our summer and the possibilites that come with it until I read this article. When, exactly, did Petrie say this? The date on the article was "updated July 10th." I am not one that always says, "We must trade (fill in the blank), but taking ANY player off the block this early bothers me. I am hoping that this is his way of reminding other GMS that he does not appreciate trade talks going public too soon. I still respect Petrie and his decisions, but if he is not even going to allow the possibilty that Ron could be traded, then m confidence in his wil fade.

Um kids this is a story in which ARTEST says Petrie told him he would not be traded. What in the long history of coments to the press by Ron makes you think this is worth the paper it is written on. Any comentary on this story is jsut yelling into the wind.

as long as he is actually interested in being here, I would love to have the guy. I used to drool over the thought of having a defensive minded tough guy like Artest on the team. He really adds a lot to our team in mental toughness, boards, steals and overall intensity when hes on. Plus hes a heck of a scorer, I think once he gets more comfortable within the scheme of things, and doesn't feel like he has to force it he will be a huge part of our team. Obviously though unless we get Lee + ?, I really really do not want to trade Ron.

Check the Artest thread in the main forum -- there were no fewer than 3 separate stories about it in the New York press today -- the Post, Daily News, and even the Times deigned to weigh in. Depending on which version of the quotes you believe either: a) Petrie was being asinine and saying that Artest was not going to be traded period (Post); or b) Petrie was equivocating and saying he expected Ron to be a King next year (more classically Petrie statement) (Daily News); or c) Geoff had finally gone completely off his rocker and said that he wasn't looking to deal anybody this summer (Times).

Of course I am just totally ignoring the utterly terrifying but vapidly self-absorbed quoted from Ron about wanting to be our franchise player forever just like Kobe, LeBron and...Wade? Forget who the third one was. Guy's gotta go. Sure the kids who were the recipient's of Ron's I want to be here because of my relationships manlove are probaboly going "oh ****" right about now. Ron reminds me of the clueless guy in school who's always hanging around on the edges of goups who try to studiously ignore him, seemingly unaware of his own unpopularity.

Geoff is making it real, REAL hard to get excited about watching this team. Every day that Petrie sits on his hands and Artest is still a King is a day I'm happy I cancelled my season tickets.

I really wished I did cancel my season tickets. I don't like the idea of having to wait 2-3 more years for the Kings to be in the playoffs...providing IF they make the playoffs in 2-3 years. I don't have the luxury to waste thousands and thousands of dollars to wait that long. I haven't like any of the Kings moves so far (Kings Coach, draft pick and not making any trades). Its been a real disappointment so far.

Um, KID, there is actually a direct quote from Petrie himself, not to mention the other articles in other parts of the forum with even more direct quotes from Petrie. Try and read the article in full before spouting off.

Sacramento is all about second chances...
He ****'d up last season, so lets see if he can turn it around this season under a coach that actually can coach.

I've heard about Cleveland, however, who would the Kings want from Minny?
kevin garnett. package those 3 up and somehow make it work. i think both sides would be happy. if ron isnt going anywhere, it means that one or both of those guys are and a dream scenario would have artest and garnett together with ronnie running point

And direct quotes aren't always what they seem to be. Not saying Petrie didn't say it, mind you, but the main thrust of the article is Artest talking about not being traded. Brick has several articles posted where Petrie's quotes are a little different. Quotes are sometimes out of context or trimmed from a larger statement qualifying it. Wouldn't be the first time a writer put in quotes what should actually be a paraphrase, either....

I would love to have KG. However, my point is we don't have any players that Minny wants to get KG.

"Ron is going to be a King," Petrie said Monday, denying he has had any conversations with the Knicks' front office. "People are having conversations with themselves."
OK, for instance, this could have been part of:

"There are no trades on the table for Ron at the moment and we feel that Ron is going to be a King when training camp starts."

A small statement like that is so hard to hang your hat on without the question and full answer. You just never know what was really said or meant without context.

Having heard Petrie on the radio talking about being aggressive this offseason, I choose to believe the words he said over a quote in a NY paper. Remember all the lousy articles by AV and Marcos by the Bee? Might just be another one of those....

I think this is more of a plan by Geoff to get full value for Ron, and Ron is being nice about it. IMO there's been too much stuff that says Ron wants to go to NY to just brush it off. His own brother told some reporters he wanted to go back home. His agent basically did it. Now he and Geoff come out at the same time and say he's not getting traded? I don't think Geoff will have a problem keeping him on the roster for a while, but I think this is Geoff saying to Isiah and Riley "I don't have to trade him for your garbage and I won't trade him for your garbage, I'll wait until you guys give me a good offer".

I agree completely.

And since when does anyone believe anything Geoff says to the media?

Although what you're saying might be the case, I'd like to believe the report is the truth because, honestly, you WILL NOT get equal value for Ron Artest. The guy's just two good, and I'd love to have him with this organization for many years to come, ESPECIALLY if money's not a big issue with him. Now he does have his off-court problems, but I'd like to think he'll mature more and more through all that stuff and come out a more responsible man than before. I say give the guy another chance, cause he really is one of the best talents and bigger bargains in the entire NBA
