No Expectations of Playoffs Next Year, Good Thing?

#1
I just finished watching the interview with Gavin Maloof on News10.com regarding the Theus hiring and he said that he doesn't expect Theus to get the Kings into the playoffs next year, that it is probably not realistic. He said that we need to go through a rebuild first.

Does this mean we won't forever be kept in mediocrity? That the Maloofs can give up their desire to win for a short while and let us rebuild? I hope this is the case.

As long as the rebuild looks good than I don't mind missing the playoffs. We need to have a vision, and that vision is to rebuild.

Exactly. I think what they'll do is trade the old guys for expirings, role players, picks, and young guys. Then we'll kind of suck next year while the team gets an idea of what direction they want to go. Then we'll get a good draft pick and get someone like Derrick Rose+sign a FA.

At least I don't have to worry about saving $$ to pay for my playoff tickets for next season.

I am glad they are publically saying it. At this point it is long past the right thing to do.

I think it also makes my decision on whether or not to get League Pass this year or to use that money to attend the Kings and Celtics games in Portland instead a whole lot easier.

I think VF21 mentioned something about that last night. And yes, its a very good sign as the necessary evil. It also will keep some heat off the neophyte coach and allow him to maybe learn what the hell he is doing. Of course it could be just an artifice to do just that -- drop expectations so that there can be no diappointment in the coaching choice. Bet Muss wishes he had gotten similar marching orders before last year. ;)

Could mean that by the time the team is rebuilt and playoff ready, they'll be in Vegas.

just me thinking. I wonder if Gavin put that out there so maybe Bibby would say "hmmm I don't want to rebuild I would like to contend again that was fun and I need to make a run for my final contract." Hoping Bibby might opt out. just a thought.

Based on the way this whole coaching situation has played out, I'm not so sure that Muss didn't do exactly what he was expected to do. He wasn't told to fail, but I think that some people higher up knew he would. That way the organization gets what it needs: a lottery pick, the excitement of the fans to rebuild, lowered expectations and some room to breathe.

I do not really buy it.

I do not buy it because I do not believe in the mythological creature called "the rebuild." I may be the only person on this board or in Sacramento that does not believe that such a thing actually exists, but I do not. I believe that it only exists in the minds of teams/fans that are losing or are a lottery team. The idea exists to help people sleep at night, but it does not exist in reality.

All teams will be making personnel changes over the summer to make themselves better. The Spurs will do it, the Suns will do it, we will do it and the Celtics will do it. Some with more success than others.

I am not trying to change minds here. It is just my view.

In the end, I would not say that I "expect" the Kings to make the playoffs next year. I certainly would not predict it (simply because I find predictions to be a waste of time).

However, I will not be surprised in the least if the Kings do make the playoffs next year. In fact, I will not be surprised if the make it as high the 4th seed.

The only thing I can say for sure is that I will be cheering my arss off from game #1 that they win the Pacific Division.

If that were true the optimal situation would have had Muss be around 2-3 years during the length of the rebuild. Now we're in danger of playing musical chairs with the coach in which case nobody will take a coach seriously.

I believe Muss sold the Maloofs the bill of goods that he could win right away with the team and that was his own doing. He may have been pressured to alter the gameplan once they began losing which would have furthered the downward spiral. Clearly he must have felt pressure to win all the way through the end of the season even when it was costing us draft position.

Yes, it is a very good thing! Hopefully it means that the Kings management see that this team just doesn't mesh well together and no amount of tinkering and re-tooling can fix it. It needs to be torn down and rebuilt, hopefully with youth.

And that may have been the plan, but at the end it seemed apparent that few people in the organization could stand him, let alone the players.

Check out the Charlotte Bobcats for the epitome of rebuild. It's not mythological.

Not surprised. and people keep saying we should give Theus a chance for what? the Kings are not giving him a chance why should we?
What the bleep are you talking about?

The entire day today has shown the Maloofs and Petrie, along with Reggie, talking about how different things are going to be. Joe and Gavin have admitted publicly FOR THE FIRST TIME that the team simply needs to rebuild and that it's going to take a while. They're talking about having the team and the new coach grow towards a long-term future back at the top of the heap.

If you don't want to give Reggie a chance, that's fine, but you might want to at least get your facts straight.

If the Kings are taking the playoff pressure off, they are actually giving Theus far more chance thean he would have otherwise. We can rebuild, end up in the lottery, and the word disappointment still won't get laid at his feet (barring of course complete incompetence or chaos).

I'm willing to give Theus a chance in the long-term process which means 3 years from now. but right now there is not a chance. I'm not hating on the guy but experience is a big factor in this i would've felt alot better if someone with coaching experience came to the Kings.

They aren't rebuilding. they are building the franchise is only 4 or 5 years old. Portland however is rebuilding and looks to be doing a nice job of it. But does rebuilding really mean just suck real bad for 4 or 5 years therefore getting 4 or 5 studs in the drafts? Cleveland rebuilt in 1 draft.

Portland has been a classic rebuild, and its about to pay off in major spades. Already have cleaned off all but one of the shaky characters (well, depends whether Miles retires or not). Have lottery picks at nearly every position. A monstrous frontline. Would instantly and ecstatically trade our entire franchise for theirs right now. They got themselves into a mess, tore it down, and have rebuilt something that might be a potential dynasty by the next decade.

they scare me with that frontline depth. I was talking about their dept last year with Magloire now he is replace by Oden. geeeeeeesh. Randolph, Pryzbilla, Aldridge, Oden and if they need a 3pt shooter at C they can throw Raef out there oh they also have (Napoleon) Luke Shewerkdsofeidskgh

What are you talking about? You are willing to give it? Good for you! The Maloofs will be thrilled to hear it! I'm sure they were waiting with baited breath to hear what you thought about their choice....

And no chance now but in 3 years? Chance for what? Does your post make any sense to you when you go back and re-read it?
