Orlando Magic lose Stan Van Gundy to Kings

Former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy arrived Wednesday in Sacramento, according to an NBA source, and appears to be on the verge of becoming the next coach of the Kings.

Van Gundy, who had been linked for days to the Orlando Magic coaching vacancy that Billy Donovan initially accepted and then bypassed in favor of a return to the University of Florida, previously had met twice with Kings management and ownership.

The Kings fired Eric Musselman after one year with the team at the end of the season.

Van Gundy had been non-committal as recently as Tuesday regarding the vacancies in Orlando and Sacramento.

However, once the Heat requested compensation from the Magic, those talks hit a roadblock.

Tuesday, upon his return from an overseas trip, coach Pat Riley, in his dual role as Heat president, stepped in with a compensation claim, with Van Gundy still under contract to the Heat through June 2008.

Riley is not believed to be seeking a similar compensation from Sacramento, with the Kings scheduled to face the Heat only twice a season, as opposed to the four games a season Orlando plays the Heat as a Southeast Division rival.

Generally, assistant coaches are free to pursue higher-level positions without compensation. However, when Van Gundy stepped aside for Riley in December 2005, he already was working under a coaching contract.

Riley generally has been more willing to allow his staff to depart for positions in the Western Conference, as was the case with former Heat assistant Jeff Bzdelik surfacing in Denver and former Heat assistant Marc Iavaroni taking a similar position in Phoenix. Bzdelik later became coach of the Nuggets, while Iavaroni last week was named coach of the Grizzlies.

Van Gundy joined the Heat as an assistant coach on Sept. 20, 1995 and took over from Riley as coach on Oct. 24, 2003. He left as Heat coach December 12, 2005, citing family reasons, after recording a 112-73 record in his two-plus seasons as coach.

Had Riley been softer in his stance with the Magic, it is possible the Heat could have secured one or more second-round picks from the Orlando. The Heat does not currently hold a second-round pick in the June 28 NBA Draft.

It is unlikely the Magic would have considered a Heat request for a future first-round pick, with Orlando not holding a pick in that round this year.

1. it doesn't say anywhere on the article that we already have SVG.

2. we can give the heat some "compensation" for SVG in the form of .......................KT!!!

Unbelievable! With the way things have gone I'm not going to be comfortable until I see SVG, the Maloofs, and GP at a press conference, but this news definitely makes me happy. I thought it was a lost cause.

Kings in play for Van Gundy

The Kings are still very much in the race to hire Stan Van Gundy.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the former Miami coach who was reportedly close to joining the Orlando Magic arrived in Sacramento on Wednesday.

His presence says plenty about his level of interest and the status of discussions with the Kings, and indications are that he could be the next Kings coach.

Asked on Tuesday if the Kings had officially offered Van Gundy the job, a Kings official noted that Van Gundy had yet to spend any time geting acquainted with the Sacramento area. That no longer appears to be a problem.

Van Gundy had told sources close to him that he would make a decision by Wednesday because he feared waiting too long and losing out on both jobs. The Magic have spent recent days cleaning up the mess made by Billy Donovan, the former Florida coach who agreed to a five-year, $27.5 million contract and then backed out over the weekend.

The legalities and delay of the Donovan situation were the first boon to the Kings efforts, with Miami Heat coach and president apparently providing a second scare tactic. Riley reportedly requested compensation for losing Van Gundy, who resigned as the Heat coach in Dec., 2005 but was still working as a consultant under his coaching contract. Van Gundy - who also interviewed with Charlotte and Indiana and even turned down a job offer from the Pacers - was one of eight candidates interviewed by the Kings and one of only two who received second interviews.

I know how you feel! I wont be convinced until I see 2 for 1 lap dances offered at Gold's Club Centerfold's in honor of SVG being hired.:D

(but, I am getting a damn good feeling now, at least better than I was about 10 minutes ago)

If this is true this is awsome, however its only a baby step towards being more competitive. There are trades and a draft to go, as well as assistant coaches. I would love to see Porter as an assistant if he doesnt land anywhere as a coach.

Hang on man....let's work one thing at a time and let us all enjoy the good news first before tackling everything else.

When that happens I'll be there to show my support. I'm definitely in a much better mood right now but the Orlando Sentinel does seem to jump to conclusions. Remember this morning SVG and the Magic were finishing up a few details on their contract and now they've lost him to the Kings. I'm happy but still a little nervous.

If this all happens, and we get the good announcement soon about SVG coming here, we should have a SVG look-alike night at Arco. There would be ALOT of guys that would be confused for being Ron Jeremy.:D

Geoff Petrie: Joe, Gavin I really want SVG as our head coach. I think he'll be perfect for our team, real professional, knowledgable, and has great NBA experience.

Maloofs: We don't want him, not enough WNBA experience.

HAHAHAHA!!!!:D Now THAT would be typical of the Maloof Family micro-management strategy that we've all come to know and love over the last year or so.

Great news!!! If this works out then look for Petrie and Riley to be making some kind of deal unless SVG is completely down on some of the Heat players rumored to be on the block i.e. J Will, Wright, etc.
