Niners Offseason

Damn, I heard he was there today, oh well. Let's see if we cant get Stallworth here.
I'd love Donte. Is he gonna give us a hometown discount? Is he even capable of a healthy season? Is he capable of being our guy? Lotta money for a lotta questions. Doesn't seem like we would get him unless he came cheaper than he's expecting right now.

I have to say, Circa_1985_Fan, you are my favorite person here at KingsFans. I feel like we are pretty much on the same level. Didn't you say you were out in Rancho?

Yeah, near Rancho...even though I'm rarely home. Oh, and thanks for the kind words, the feeling is mutual. As far as that 'hometown discount'...it may not be TOO far fetched...I think his options are...1. Stay in Philly with Donovan. 2. Come sign with the Niners and be close to home and play with perhaps the most improved team in the NFL. I'd say if you had to give odds, it would be like 60% in our favor.

Cool. We are both old school guys as far as Sacramento Kings knowledge goes.

Donte seems a bit smallish to me, to be a number 1 guy, but Steve Smith has crushed that stereotype. He's got to be thinking.. Donovan.. Alex.. Donovan.. Alex.. Northern California.. Philly.

People are passionate in Philly, so I could see our guy staying there. If they pay him of course.

So far, so good in my opinion. Clements might be a bit overpaid, but if he shows up and produces like the pro bowler he is, I won't complain. Getting Michael Lewis and Aubrayo Franklin was huge. We basically got 3 upgrades on defense in the span of a few days. Not landing Adalius Thomas is a bummer. There isn't much in the way of linebackers in FA or the draft worth mentioning. Lawrence Timmons is the #1 rated OLB but he is projected around the low 20's in the first round. Paul Posluszny OLB from Penn St. would be a good 2nd round pick if he's available. I liked that we re-signed Bryant Young and Brian Gilmore too.

Not sure what the deal is with Ashley Lelie. 4million including 2mill guaranteed for a 3rd down WR? So I guess we won't be drafting Amobi Okoye then. I really liked that guy. Combine looked good and he was great in the Senior Bowl.

As far as the draft looks now, assuming we don't get Donte Stallworth in FA, we should try hard to draft Ted Ginn. If we get Stallworth, we should draft Adam Carriker or Gaines Adams. Both are highly touted DEs coming off solid seasons.

Yeah, he's like the only above average reciever left out there FA-wise, anyways, so it wouldnt surprise me if he milks it for awhile, just because he knows he can.

Wow. Quite a bit of money being thrown around by managment. Let's hope that they aren't using the Dan Snyder model of team management.

There are some pretty good receivers available in the draft, although they tend to not be immediate impact players.

Totally agree. That's why it is imperative that we go hard after Stallworth with the rest of our cap space.

Then we draft like this:

Rd. 1 : DE
Rd. 2 : RB
Rd. 3 : OG
Rd. 4 : WR, OT, CB
Rd. 5 : LB

we have 2 3rd rounders and 4 fourth rounders i believe

I dont think anyone can really compare what we're doing with that Snyder has done. Snyder has kind of put together a team of square pegs, if you will, and alot of older guys in key positions where you really need youth, outside of getting Portis, of course. What we're doing(and have been for quite some time), is cutting costs, drafting smart(at least the last 2 years), and spending 'smart money'. Now, of course...this is the same thing that Arizona did, too...and look what it got them last year, nada. They have the 2 best young recievers in the game in Boldin and Fitz, and the Edge, with a decent O-line(that took a hit today in losing Davis, of couse), good young QB, and a decent D.

This is Arizona you are talking about right? I can't argue about the recievers but Edge is washed up, their O-line is anemic, Lienart was overrated and their defense is mediocre.

Stallworth isn't worth going after. He has a bit of the injury bug.
Yeah, but he's a hell of alot better than what we have now at WR...unless you want to roll with a Lelie/Battle combo all next year.(although I do expect Vernon Davis to have a hell of a year)

edit: would you want to rely on getting a #1 reciever in the draft?? Ginn and Jarrett are cool, I guess, but #1 worthy?

The only WR I want in the draft is Calvin Johnson and will go no later than 3 or 4 :(

Many teams won't talk to Stallworth until he brings his price down, must be a bit too high.

Vernon Davis will be key. I'm sure he'll be split wide much like Heap in Baltimore. Lelie & Battle for the time being will be serviceable. The type of WR the 49ers need right now will be a speedster to stretch the field (Ginn would fit here), as the aforementioned are possesion type receivers...unless Lelie lives up to his own hype. :D

Nate Clements --- Overpayed, overhyped, yet if he is what is going to make our defense become respectable, I'm all for the overpayment.

Tully Banta-Cain --- He isn't Adalius Thomas or Joey Porter...But when you spend 80mil on Clements you have to settle...I'm definitly not complaining about this one.

Ashley Lelie --- This guy's going to be our number 1? He thought he could do it in Denver, couldn't click in Atlanta...It's put up or shut up for you Mr. Lelie.

Micheal Lewis --- Im going to love to see the two Lewis' jacking up people with their savage hits...Return to Pro Bowl form, Mike!

Aubrayo Franklin --- Nothing wrong with a good nose tackle if we want the 3-4!

All in all, Im pretty happy...Our recieving core isn't going to be overwhelming, to say the least, though.

Ashley Lelie has a LOT of talent. He just needs to be utilized correctly. Unfortunately, I don't know if the 49ers offense will be up to the task. Depends on how much rapport Smith and Lelie can develop. It could be very interesting.

If Vernon Davis stays healthy this season and improves his ball catching (dropped a lot of easy ones early in the season last year), that alone greatly improves our passing game.

Maybe draft picks. I remember when we got Wendell Tyler from the RAMS back in the day. Huge pick-up for us, as he used to have some big games against us.

On another note, when we traded Charles Haley to DALLAS, it weakened our team immensely, and helped them complete the puzzle that ended up making them a dominant defensive force (and eventually winning the Superbowl that year, not to mention beating us in the NFC Championship game).
