And the most requested funeral song is...

Note: this article is from London. However, I bet it closely mirrors what is played at American funerals as well.

1 - "Goodbye My Lover" - James Blunt
2 - "Angels" - Robbie Williams
3 - "I've Had The Time Of My Life" - Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley.
4 - "Wind Beneath My Wings" - Bette Midler
5 - "Pie Jesu" - Requiem
6 - "Candle In The Wind" - Elton John
7 - "With Or Without You" - U2
8 - "Tears In Heaven" - Eric Clapton
9 - "Every Breath You Take - The Police
10 -"Unchained Melody" - Righteous Brothers.

I think that really depends on the age of the deceased. I've attended probably 10 funerals in the past year and don't recall hearing ANY of those particular songs.

You are correct. I have heard of 'Unchained Melody' being played at fuunerals I've known about, but these were mostly middle-aged and older. The article talks more about what is usually played at the funerals of children, which are obviously kid's songs. I couldn't help but snicker at the 'Time of my Life' song, as I've always thought of that as being a purely upbeat song, not funeral-ly at all. But it makes sense looking at the title for funerals that aren't so somber.

One song that I want to see played at my funeral is "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life", from the movie "Monty Python's Life Of Brian".

Art Garfunkel also sang the song, and his version was used during the closing credits in the Jack Nicholson movie "As Good As It Gets".

All of those songs are rather uninspired to me. Not that I know of anything better. The last funeral I went to the only music I remember was us being required to sing "Onward Christian Soldiers" and how uncomfortable it made my mother.

personally, I don't want really want any sad songs at my funeral. I would rather everyone celebrate the life I had. Not the shell in the coffin.

I always think of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" from the Big Chill.

The last funeral I want to, I had to sing "How Great Thou Art" acapella. Now that was difficult. She was a sweet old lady and a close friend. :(

Oohh....now that I've gotta see! I'm sure there's some twisted personality out there that would like for that song to be played at their funeral. A Satanist, perhaps?
Or a pragmatist, depending on the person.

"Dem Bones" might be a better AIC song than "Down in a Hole." ;)
There's also "Go To Hell", by Megadeth. :D

i hope they don't play any of that sad stuff at my funeral ( hopefully that won't be fore another 70 years :D)

AIC or AC/DC wouldn't be half bad. Queens Another one bites the dust... Or I could have Mitch Hedberg played....

My grandma wanted her favorite song "Oh Danny Boy" be played at hers. She got it. My grandpa did too. My Grandpa wanred his played loud so he could hear it(Jokingly, Since he lost half of his hearing during a Japanese bombing raid in WW2). He also got his 21 gun salute.

Huh...kind of a weird list given that most people dying today would have grown up in an era of much different music. I suppose it might reflect the tastes of the children left behind rather than that of the deceased.

You're somewhat correct, Brick. It all depends on if the death was unexpected or not. If it was expected, then the person had the time to pick what they wanted played at their funeral. Either that or their loved ones played a song they knew the deceased really liked.

Coincidentally, I heard this song on the radio yesterday: "Don't Fear the Reaper", the classic rock song by Blue Oyster Cult. Come on, that's a perfect funeral song!
