Penechiero or Haynie: Who Do You Ride for Game Five

I understand that Ticha is our starting point guard, and rightfully so. But I could not help but notice that Haynie played all of the big minutes last night. And Ticha has spent large chunks of time on the bench in this series. I don't even think Coach Whisnant can figure this situation out, based on his post game comments last night.

This is not a question whether who should be the starter, this is a question of:

1. Do you go with the veteran Hall of Famer, defensive minded point who makes your defense better but is a HUGE DETREMENT on offense against Detroit.

2. Or do you go with your inexperienced sophomore, offensive minded point who is fearless with her shot, but struggles on defense.

My opinion is Ticha has had four games to establish her shot, and it has not happened. Haynie has played well and "well enough" on the defensive end to keep her on the floor. I would take my chances with Haynie. At least the Monarchs on the offense end, Detroit has to play her honestly, instead of the 5 on 4 they play when Ticha is on the floor. The Monarchs have to re-establish the oofensive swagger they had before last night. That ain't going to happen with Ticha on the floor playing 20-30 minutes.

You know this is potentially bad Mojo Heading into a Winner Take All Ball game.

We win or Lose at a Team. A unit. Ticha is our leader, Haynie is her understudy. We have all had a chance to step up when the time requires.

If she has to, Let her step up. But Lets keep the unit together and not play people off of one another.

Great efforts from Ticha and Haynie. That is what I want.

I chose #3.

Haynie is having a good (offensive-wise) games thus far in this Finals series. Besides, in a Game 5 situation, you have to go with the person who has the "hot hand", and Haynie has that. So, if I were Coach Whiz, I would start Haynie.

I would go with Ticha only on certain defensive situations, or if we're commanding a big lead (which I hope is often!). But if we need points, go with Haynie.

Also, there's an emotional factor: Kristin is back in her home state and her "Haynieacs" family members will be there cheering for her. The Monarchs can take all the advantages they can get!

GO MONARCHS (and HAYNIE)!!!

I agree with everything you say except starting Haynie. I would start Ticha regardless. But I would not wait to see if her shot is going. I play Haynie big minutes, only because she keeps the Detroit defense honest. Sacramento would have to make huge adjustments in guarding Smith and Nolan, but with a win or taker all situation, I don't know if Whisnant can afford to wait for Ticha.

It is not about playing one person against the other. This is professional sports. besides Ticha did not seem to heart broken sitting on the bench last night. She is the consumate pro, she knows what is at stake here.

Um, perhaps I missed something... but how exactly did Haynie do a better job of running the offense? Haynie played almost the entire second half where the Monarchs went on to set a record for the most pathetic offensive performance in Finals history.

from the Finals Blog:

You have to think John Whisenant had trouble sleeping last night, thinking of new ways to get his team to score. His team looked pitiful offensively in the second half, scoring only 15 points, which is a new Finals record.

Riding Haynie and the rest of the bench didn't get us anywhere last night, except in a really deep hole.

Oh, and Ticha out-scored, out-rebounded, and out-assisted Haynie last night even though she spent almost the entire 2nd half riding the pine.

Maybe Whiz should have stuck with the lineup that worked: The starters.

Eh...if I saw a reason to give the hook as it was given for as long as it was given last night... when we were being taken to school by Angelina Williams and Jaqueline Batteast....I could see the point of raising this question. I didn't, so I don't.

To me last night was almost a carbon copy of how game 2 rolled except we didn't have the lead at half. Don't remember what the 3rd/4th quarters looked like in game 2, but I for durn sure remember the Monarchs trying their best to only score 2pts in that 4th quarter too before somebody decided to actually score.

I agree about the weird vibes I'm getting in the mojo department from this thread...We already started funky mojo with the talk about not wanting sweeps and such, let's try to roll some more positive mojo to the Ms @ the Joe on Saturday.

Why didn't he play Ticha? If the numbers bare out that Ticha played better, why did she only play 17 minutes? Is she hurt?

Makes no sense to me!!

I like both, but Ticha is an expereinced veteran and right now, she runs the offense better. I just don't want her to not be aggressive with her shot. Even if she doesn't make a shot, she forces Detroit to defend her.

I do hope Haynie is amped to play in front of the Haynie-acs again, tho.

No she doesn't. She missed seven shots last night and they still played 5 on 4. Ticha penechiero has never been consistant hitting her shot. That is why this has been an issue for 9 years.

I'd still rather she try open shots or drives to the basket to shoot, if she has a chance. I like it a lot more than not even trying to shoot.

I know its a big issue and has been as long as Ticha's been on the team. Unfortunately, the only way to fix it, is to get a new point guard or hope Haynie develops nice and quick.

Well, I guess the other way to fix it would be to have that "star" player who can create her own shot and carry the team on her back offensively. Maybe DeMya will be that next year, but she is obviously not 100% and I didn't expect her to be.

I still think the offense runs smoother with Ticha on the floor. That's not a knock on Haynie, she's just young and inexperienced. By the way, I thought Sho had some real "rookie" moments out there last night. Jitters, I'm sure.

Well, the gunner mentality has never truly been consistently successful in the NBA, and that's what Haynie is at this stage. She looks to score above anything else, for better or for worse. Sure, she has her fans, but her passing game is subpar and her defense has already been mentioned. I'd stick with the veteran Ticha and of course give Haynie some minutes when we need the spark.

And oh yes, Ticha and Haynie should be switched within the game accordingly. We need defense, poise, and leadership, put Ticha in. We need scoring, intensity, and just a general sparkplug, put Haynie in. Or perhaps use both--one as OG and the other as PG--Ticha's passing/defense and Haynie's outside shooting can complement each other.

I was not happy with Haynie's play last night. I saw a gunner mentality coming down the court. I also saw someone who got caught up in too much dribbling instead of getting that ball moving. Ticha is, and will probably always be, a better floor general. She is a better ball handler, a better passer, a better defender, and she sure as heck sees the court better.

I like it that Kristin is such a spark, especially when we need to rest Ticha, but no way in hell is she a better player than Ticha. She can shoot. That is nice, but our starters are shooters, especially since putting Kara on the wing with Nicole. We need Kristin's ability to shoot from the bench. The idea of starting her is just idiotic in my book.

I want the smart veteran on the floor. Everyone complained that she was not shooting the ball. Well, she started out the game being aggressive. Coach needs to remind her to drive, drive, drive with the ball.

I agree with 6th...we need a more uptempo game & when Ticha's running the show good things happen. With that being said we need Haynie to come in give Ticha a break & score , when the shot is there.
For me I would have put all the starters in the entire 4th quarter, & see where the vets take us..live or die with the starters. I'm just thinking we got over confident & we came out flat. Bad timing. I know us fans never thought we'd lose this game...I was a bit stunned that we could'nt turn it around.
Regardless, it's been a back & forth series...I KNOW OUR TEAM CAN WIN!
We have to focus on the positive & come out in force to Arco on Sat. Let our players know we are with them 100%...I believe in this team to respond!

When the chips are down and our 'Narchs backs are against the wall, I would choose to go with our veterans pretty much every time. There were HUGE minutes in the 4th quarter where neither Ticha nor Yo were on the floor. The team was struggling big time, and neither one of our leaders were out there. I agree that I would have played our starters most if not all of the last quarter.

Personally, I'm SOOOO tired of hearing that Ticha Penicheiro is not a shooter. We all know this. Nothing's changed for 9 yrs, except that her confidence as our floor general seems to be at an all time low. That is truly sad. She is hands down the most brilliant floor leader that I have seen in the women's game. She is a true, old school point guard--selfless, a passing genius, and NO-ONE, ABSOLUTELY NO-ONE sees the floor like she does. I am beyond perplexed as to why Wiz chose to sit her on the bench most of the second half. She started the game aggressive--scored six of the 'Narchs first 11 pts. She seemed to be in a groove offensively, and Wiz did what seems to be his pattern--pull her. Arggh:mad:

Don't get me wrong--I see Haynie as a big part of the Monarchs future, and since I am from Michigan and an MSU alumni, I am a big fan of hers. But please Wiz, trust your starters on Saturday--play them the big minutes like you did when we beat LA in Anaheim.

GO MONARCHS--WE BELIEVE IN YOU!!! BRING HOME THE TROPHY!!!:
