Will soon be upon us. I have a Notre Dame bias, and think they'll be pretty good this year, with 1-2 losses probable, but a no-loss season possible. How about other people's teams?
SC is looking a little shaky, and they may be missing Norm Chow this year.

I'm LSU fan all the way. I've been a homer since moving to Baton Rouge 10 years ago. I do still have a soft spot for South Carolina. I grew on the coast and most of my family attended school there. Obviously, I am an SEC girl.

USC and Texas don't have many challengers in their conferences.

USC has to deal with Cal and maybe Oregon. Texas might have to worry about Texas Tech a little as well as an early season matchup with OSU, Oklahoma isn't going to be much with out their QB, so I dont' see anyone else out of the Big 12...maybe Nebraska returns to glory, but unlikely.

ND plays too hard a schedule to go unbeaten, and the SEC and BIG 10 are rediculous every year! I find it hard to convince myself that one team can go through there undefeated or even with 1 loss. OSU, MICH, Penn St., Iowa, MICH ST. is always a spoiler, as well as WISC and MINN.

And I won't even get started on the SEC: AUB, ALA, FLA, GA, TN, LSU, SC, all could win 8-10 games this year!

If you tie me down and tell me to pick two teams to go to the Fiesta Bowl...I'll go with Auburn and Penn St. We'll see what happens though!

Preseason 2005: ND's schedule is too hard = 0-6 start for sure.
Postseason 2005: ND didn't beat anybody.
Same stuff every year.
Penn State's warmup team is "Akron". ND also plays a warmup team. I call them "Georgia Tech".
The SEC is tough to call. I think Auburn has the best shot out of all of them, but you never know.

BTW, I was in Ashton, ID this past summer. Small world, eh?

Norm Chow left before last season. This is his second season gone from SC.

Yeah, I know, but it usually takes more than a year before the impact is felt, as he had a heavy hand in working with Leinart. As the new players come in, the impact will become clearer, as Carroll is a defensive guy.

UGA baby!!! GO DAWGS!! Defend your SEC title! chelle- you ready this year?
SEC is the hardest conference and of course our preseason rank is way off. Every year that happens, it's kind of funny now. The only problem we might have is QB but we'll see how it goes.

OF COURSE I'M READY!!!!! It's been tooo long! We are already getting things lined up for tailgating - which for us down here is ALMOST as important as the game itself!

I agree your ranking is way off. Ours may be a tad too high. However, I think all SEC teams should get an automatic bump in the rankings!:D I still believe it is the toughest conference in football. I'm nervous for Miles this season. We were not too shaby last year and people were ready to tar and feather him last season. Saban casts a LONG shadow.

I already have you penciled in to play us in the SEC championship!!! Too bad we will not play until then!

Tailgating is an art form in Athens, most of the people don't even have tickets, they just party. I'll be looking forward to beating you down in Dec.:D We play SC on Sept.9th so we can talk about that to hold us over. Beating Spurrier is always a joy!!:D

gotta show some love to the defending champs!! vince is gone, but I still look forward to an exciting season. can't wait to see what my boys can do!

^^^^^ BOOOOO!

Fight On!! :p
Come on now, you're gonna have to give us something to work with. Who's going to help push your QB into the end zone this year? Word is that the offense looks shaky in comparison with last year, which is no surprise having lost quite a few players.

I have to show some love here to Fresno State. Coach Hill has really built this into a solid program and we should see another solid season. New quarteback stepping in and a good 3 games at the start of the season, after a warm up in Nevada, we play Oregon, Washington, then Colorado State. Should be able to make a nice showing there and a couple wins will put us right back into the top 25, somewhere I never would have dreamed that you would see Fresno State consistently, but its really happening down here.

It's not about supporting a team when they're rated no.1 and winning national championships. Like the Lakers, I've been a fan since I was a kid, (again, thanks mom). Booty's no slouch and Jarrett is back. I'm not planning on a championship, but I don't think they'll be as bad as you're hoping either. How's that? :D

You sound like a bitter ND fan, no?? Weis wasn't upset..said he hoped his team would have done the same thing. And with that.....

FIGHT ON!!

Hill's impressive. I worry about when he leaves Fresno for a top tier program. His "anyone, anywhere, anytime" attitude is great for their program.

I'm not hoping they're bad, I know that they're not going to be as good as last year. Aren't they on like their 3rd string RB now, which for SC is still pretty good anyway. You haven't sold me on Booty - we'll just wait and see. November 25th - Quinn puts on a Heisman performance, just like Palmer did a couple of years ago.

I don't think Booty's been able to get much playing time these past couple seasons...Leinart was just too good. I'm with you..we'll just have to wait and see.

If Hill was going to leave, I think it would have been last year. He went last summer, visited a few places, even talked to the Raiders and saw what was out there, but he has it pretty good here, and he realized that, and he wants to keep building on the base he has, which looks very promising. After a couple more years doing what he is doing, if the program keeps seeing the type of improvement it has the last few years, he will be getting up into the untouchable status around here, so if he ends up leaving, I think it will be at least 5-6 years down the road.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Redshirt freshman Colt McCoy (Tuscola, Texas/Jim Ned HS) has been named the Longhorns starting quarterback, head coach Mack Brown announced on Monday. McCoy will become the fourth freshman quarterback to start a game since Mack Brown arrived at Texas in 1998. He’ll be the first Longhorn freshman quarterback to start the season opener since redshirt freshman Shea Morenz in 1993.

The previous three freshmen that started a game during the Mack Brown era, redshirt freshman Major Applewhite (1998), true freshman Chris Simms (1999) and redshirt freshman Vince Young (2003), combined to post a starting record of 14-4 in their first seasons. Applewhite and Young both rank among the top five on several UT freshman statistical lists and earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors.

“Greg Davis is the best there is at developing quarterbacks, and we’ve had a great deal of success when we’ve had to play freshmen here,” Brown said. “He has Colt really prepared as we head into the season, and I think he’ll put him in a position for our offense to continue the success we’ve had the last several years.”

“I’m really excited about where we are at the quarterback position. All four of our quarterbacks — Colt, Jevan (Snead), Matt (McCoy) and Sherrod (Harris) — have worked really hard and are doing a great job for us. Colt and Jevan competed hard for the starting job, performed well and really helped each other out in the spring and throughout camp. I think we’re at as good of a spot as we could expect at the position. All they need now is to get some game experience.”

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound McCoy was 34-2 as a prep starter and a two-time Texas 2A Associated Press Offensive MVP. His 9,344 passing yards are tops in Texas 2A history and fourth overall in Lone Star State high school annals. McCoy led Jim Ned to the state 2A finals as a junior. He completed 536-of-849 passes (63.1%) for 9,344 yards and 116 TDs in his career and also rushed 206 times for 1,575 yards and 21 TDs. McCoy, who spent the 2005 season redshirting and learning from Davis and Davey O’Brien Award winner (nation’s top QB) Vince Young, registered 10,919 yards of total offense as a prepster. He also has earned a spot on UT’s Athletics Director’s Honor Roll (3.0 GPA) in each of his two semesters on campus.

“Colt gained a great deal of experience during his redshirt year and has worked really hard to build on that during the spring and summer,” Brown said. “He had a terrific camp and was at his best during our scrimmages. We’re really excited about his progress and looking forward to seeing him in game action this week against North Texas.”

Texas’ freshman quarterback will benefit from the return of seven starters and several other key contributors from a record-setting offense that led the nation in scoring (50.2 ppg) and pass efficiency (160.94), ranked second in rushing (274.9 ypg) and finished third in total offense (512.1 ypg) in 2005. The Longhorns set an NCAA record for points (652) in a season and became only the fifth team in NCAA history to register more than 50 points and 500 yards per game en route to the National Championship.

“Our offense has a chance to once again be one of the best in the country,” Brown said. “There has been a lot of talk about the quarterback, but we know what the rest of those guys gave us all of last year. We have some places where we’ll need to step up, but we’re excited about our experience we return, particularly on the offensive line, at receiver and in the running game.”

McCoy will be backed up by 6-foot-3, 215-pound true freshman Jevan Snead (Stephenville, Texas/Stephenville HS), who graduated high school early and enrolled at UT last spring. A Parade All-American who was 23-2 as a prep starter, Snead threw for 7,955 yards and 100 TDs in his final two high school seasons. He completed 230-of-370 passes for 3,546 yards and 38 TDs in leading Stephenville to the state 4A semifinals as a senior. Snead also ran for 766 yards and 23 TDs that year. A two-time All-State selection, He completed 411-of-674 passes (61.0%) and added 1,384 yards and 33 TDs rushing during his final two prep seasons. Snead tallied 9,339 yards of total offense as a prepster.

“The progress Jevan has made being less than a year separated from his senior year in high school has been pretty unbelievable,” Brown added. “He picked up on things quickly in the spring, came into camp in great shape and showed some great progress. We’re really excited about what he can bring to our team. We’ll continue to develop a plan get him some playing time.”

McCoy will become UT’s sixth freshman QB to start since Morenz in 1993. He follows Young (2003), Simms (1999), Applewhite (1998), redshirt freshman James Brown (1994) and Morenz (1993) as freshman quarterbacks who have started at UT in the last 14 years. Three other freshmen have started at Texas since freshmen became eligible to play in 1972. They are redshirt freshman Peter Gardere (1989), redshirt freshman Mark Murdock (1988) and true freshman Mark McBath (1976).

Texas opens the season on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against North Texas (11 a.m./Central/FSN). The Longhorns are riding a 20-game winning streak (best in nation/second-best in school history) and a 15-game home winning streak (second-best in nation/fourth-best in school history).

i'm excited to see what the season brings...

MORTON GROVE, Ill. (AP) -In his first season as coach, Charlie Weis returned Notre Dame to national prominence. In his second, Weis expects the team to be a national title contender.

The second-ranked Fighting Irish begin a season of lofty expectations Saturday when they play at Georgia Tech.

Weis, who was part of four Super Bowl winning squads as an assistant coach in the NFL, aggressively began reshaping Notre Dame in his image after returning to his alma mater last year. The Fighting Irish went 9-3 last year, capped by a 34-20 loss to preseason No. 1 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Weis' biggest reason for optimism is the return of eight linemen, four on each side of the ball. He expects both the offensive and defensive lines to set the tone of games for the Irish.

''Anytime you have an experienced group of linemen on both sides of the ball, that bodes well for your chances. (Bill) Parcells told me a long time ago, it always starts with the big guys,'' Weis said. ''Any time you have two veteran lines you have to think you have a chance.''

It also helps to have a quarterback like Brady Quinn , who is coming off an impressive junior year in which he set single-season school records with 3,919 yards and 32 touchdowns. Weis has been able to turn Quinn - who already holds Notre Dame records for passing yards (8,336) and TDs (58) - into both a Heisman Trophy candidate and his on-field coach.

''You're going to say, 'Nice job. Move the chains.' I will now say to him: 'What's your first read? Was he open? Did you see him? Did you even look at him?'' Weis said of Quinn. ''Now you're taking him to a whole different level of thought process.''

Jeff Samardzija - who tied a school record with 77 receptions and set Notre Dame records with 1,249 yards and 15 touchdowns - returns at wide receiver. Rhema McKnight , who missed all but two games last year with a knee injury, will try to fill the void created by the departed Maurice Stovall .

''It was very heartbreaking at times,'' McKnight said. ''I had to accept the fact that I was injured and couldn't come back and play. I just had to rehab and just try to keep pushing and keep trying to make myself better.''

Running back Darius Walker will try to build off an impressive 2005 season in which he rushed for 1,196 yards and nine touchdowns.

The defense is still a concern for Notre Dame, which allowed more than 5,000 yards and finished 75th in the nation, its lowest since being ranked 82nd after finishing 2-7 in 1962. Defensive back Tom Zbikowski , who returned two of his five interceptions for touchdowns in 2005, is the top player in the secondary.

''Everyone's telling me how bad the defense is. I guess we'll just have to wait until Saturday night to find out,'' Weis said. ''We'll see if we have any speed or not.''

Georgia Tech has proven to be a difficult out for ranked opponents early in the season. The Yellow Jackets , who went 7-5 last season and lost to Utah in the Emerald Bowl, has six wins over ranked opponents the last four years, including a 23-14 upset at No. 16 Auburn to start 2005.

Despite the success, Yellow Jackets coach Chan Gailey is at a loss to explain why his teams start strong.

''I don't know why we have been able to go out and play well early,'' Gailey admitted. ''We've been, for the most part, healthy early in the year. That is always a big part of it. But I can't put my finger on it.''

The Yellow Jackets will rely on the offensive tandem of quarterback Reggie Ball and running back Tashard Choice , who has become a starter with the departure of P.J. Daniels to the NFL. Ball threw for 2,165 yards and 11 touchdowns but also had 12 interceptions.

Choice, who had a team-high six rushing TDs to go with 543 yards, has become more of a leader in taking the starting running back spot.

''I understand I have more responsibility for me, my coaches and my teammates. I was a leader when I came in and off the field, but this year I have to set more of an example, get out there and make plays and this is a dream for me. I'm ready to accept this, and you have to go out and practice that way and understand that you are going to be counted on for 12 games.''

Bell has a standout receiver in Calvin Johnson , who had 54 receptions for 888 yards and six touchdowns despite facing constant double teams. Georgia Tech returns eight offensive starters, including four linemen.

The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series 26-5-1, but the Yellow Jackets posted a 35-28 victory in the last meeting in the 1999 Gator Bowl. This is the first time the teams are playing at Georgia Tech since 1980, when the teams played to a 3-all tie when Notre Dame was the top-ranked team in the country.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/ncaa/previews/2006/09/02/33992_preview.html

I think Brady Quinn is the real deal. The fightin Irish are lucky to have him. I like the guy a lot.

Yes, finally football season. Texas, Michigan, Georgia and Iowa all handling their business already today. 56-7 was a good start for UT, but the real test will be against Ohio next week. Colt McCoy looked surprisingly impressive out there today.

Woo pig Sooie! I know we lost, but the future looks bright with Mustain at the helm. Dude threw 3800 yards and 47 tds at Springdale high, went 14-0, won the state ship, and was ranked 2nd in the nation in high school. Guy can play. Oh did I mention that his high school coach is now the offensive coordinator, he also has his two wide recievers from high school as well as his tight end.
