[KINGS] Comments that don't warrant their own thread (Redux)

This is likely to get him some conditioning and practice - there aren't many minutes for him right now anyway, whether that's right or wrong is a different discussion.
Once we found out Carter was going to miss all the off-season and a good chunk of the season, he was always a play for next year and for the long-term future of the team. He's given us some real flashes on defense, but kind of as expected, he's all out of sorts on offense and has been pretty awful. Think him getting 30+ minutes in the G-League, just getting his timing back is really going to help.

Ouur G-League Team has been very good at prepping potential rotational pieces for their NBA roles - like having Isaac Jones work on his perimeter play. The Stockton Kings can put Devin Carter in the primary ball handler role - so he’s prepared for more responsibilities when he next plays NBA minutes.

Also - our current roster situation is bonkers. We need to get the rotations established for our starters, Keon, JV and LaRavia before we will know where Devin could contribute on offense.

The only real thing he needs now is the ability to find a shot he can go to around the basket or off the curl. Coming out of college he had almost no midrange and I get that the "modern game" loathes mid range, but he's got the beginnings of a really decent floater. The long shot should come, but around the basket is where he needs to kind of work on a consistent finisher. He's got all the tools, now he needs refinement. Passing wise he's still per 36 the 3rd best APG player on the team that qualifies and despite some shaky looking handles it hasn't really led to turnovers.

That record is on the coaching.

I love how Christie saves multiple time outs to make Defense and Offensive switches in the last 2 minutes to seal the wins.
I like that he called a timeout on one of those last possessions (I think when the Mavericks had .2 left on the clock) just to make sure the defense was set and we didn't mess up

He's more judicious with timeouts and challenges, though he's also not hording them either. For a "rookie" interim head coach who hasn't even been given any assurance of keeping the job beyond the season he isn't re-inventing the game but he's showing a level of wisdom and experience you really can't teach either.

We really need to take the "interim" tag away, and give Doug the HC position next season. At least give the guy a full 82-game season to work with and see what he can do. I'll be excruciatingly annoyed and pissed off if Doug isn't coaching this team next season.

I think Doug should get next season and Monte should as well. Since no 2025 picks were acquired in the SAS deal and hopefully the pick to ATL conveys, Monte can't really screw the offseason up, if he somehow saves LaRavia for a second contract and gets Keon extended we're in business. Then if we're bad we can start the rebuild.

Yeah, its a bit of a weird spot. You dont want Monte to hire Doug, just for Monte to get fired after next season. I feel like you either move on this offseason and let the next GM pick their guy to move forward, or you commit to Monte and Doug for the next 2-3 years

the other part of the calculus is who is available and who will have a head coach spot to fill. There is a decent chance that there are no vacancies this summer. Maybe Chicago? Who knows with them. Maybe Portland depending on how they finish? If there is a star coach available you would have to at least consider it especially when competition is low. Having said that, I like the moves Doug has made the last couple games and I’m interested to see what he does with some practices during the break. Our metrics have been dreadful over the last 15 games, now that things have settled I’m curious to see how things shake out

Absolutely wild to me that Chauncey may have saved his job in Portland. Guy should have been fired at least 3x by now.

I think the best play is to let Doug pick an assistant staff and give him and Monte at least one year - No sense bringing in a totally new coach if Monte is on the hot seat, or a GM and forcing Doug on them. So you either clear house, which I know some fans would love but I think is premature and sends the message that Vivek is completely lost again, or you give these guys a chance to prove that Beam Team was no fluke but player focus was. Of course if we finish out of the play-in or Doug winds up below .500 at the end of the day bigger changes are probably needed.

I thought this video gave a really good look into how Doug has been managing things....

the only guy I would consider is Tuomas Iisalo. He basically has been coach of the year at every stop over in Europe and has that Memphis offense humming. He might be the next great NBA coach. Hes about as perfect a fit with Monte as you could get. The question is how committed is Vivek to Monte?
Or maybe Doug really shines this last stretch and the decision is easy to bring him back

We aren't rebuilding yet.
My point was that Doug would be the kind of coach a rebuilding team would hire, so he wouldn't necessarily be replaced immediately if and when Monte gets replaced as a GM.

I assume the Kings would handle a Monte transition the same way it handled the PDA transition and the Vlade transition; Joerger and Walton still stuck around for a while after the GM has been replaced, in order for the new GM to set up their preferred coach for success

Well, I think Vivek is fairly committed to Monte and has his ear, would be my guess. You don't let your GM fire the COY, what, 100ish games after winning the award if you didn't have complete trust in what he's trying to do. Right or wrong, seems to me this FO is fairly safe, at least while DDR and LaVine are under contract.

If Monte gets fired it's probably because he didn't re-work fast enough. I don't know what Vivek's head is at. We just fired the head coach and traded the star player, I will be honest it's hard not to put some of that on the GM's head. Maybe the org is fine blaming Fox for everything (and maybe that is actually where the blame lays). But it's really hard to figure out what next, I just wonder what the goal is for 25-26. Nothing has ever led me to think Vivek will reset.
