Kareem, Shaq, Lebron, AD…..now Luka.

Lebron in the twilight of his career, League ensures torch is passed and Lakers stay relevant
That was my first thought as well. The Lakers were about to be an afterthought and now they'll be the center of attention again. Kindof strange how this keeps happening for them, unless you believe the whole thing is rigged. I'm starting to take that idea more seriously.

Of course it is. Pau Gasol for nothing. Damn near got Chris Paul in his prime but every other team complained and that stopped it. Now The Mavs deal Luka to the Lakers for no apparent reason and cite weight issues and fear he wouldnt resign???!
In what world is Anthony Davis and a 2029 1st the best you can get in return for Luka Doncic???

02 already proved it was rigged what more does everyone need? Lol
Sure I figured it was rigged in a "do we want the Lakers going for a threepeat in the Finals or the Kings" sortof way -- just a bit of gamesmanship to guarantee better ratings. The league office telling a franchise that they have to trade their 25 year old MVP candidate to the NBA's favorite franchise or else is a whole other level of WWE shenanigans that I did not expect. But that's more believable than anyone being dumb enough to think this trade makes the Mavs better.

Literally, the NBA is fixed. Mavs makes this trade 6 days before the deadline clearly shows they never shopped him to other teams. They would have gotten a mega return for Luka, but they never even put him on the market, except to the Lakers. Sickening, really.

Sounds like the Mavs really did want AD. I get the reactions, but AD is still a legit all star/borderline franchise player whereas Butler is at the tail end of his career.
no doubt A.D. was the guy they wanted I’m just questioning their wisdom. Sure Jimmy is four years older than A.D. but given the average number of games, they each played over the last few years smart money would always say you’re gonna get more games out of show than AD and it’s not very likely that either of them will be in the league five years from now.

NBA's ratings are down too. Now there's a huge trade for one of the biggest stars to go to the most popular team. The team that dealt him was just in the NBA finals last season and they cite at least 3 different reasons why they thought that trading their best player was a great idea for them. Meanwhile, literally no other team in the league was aware that Doncic was available other than the Lakers??? Fixed.

so the Mavericks, a real business with real investors, took the call from the nba to throw away their franchise player because Shaquille O’Neal said the ratings are down?

A shame the internet jumps straight to conspiracy when it struggles to comprehend a thing, when stupidity and ineptitude are right there as explanations.
This trade makes 0 sense coming from the Mavericks. Why would you trade away a 25-year-old MVP candidate, future HOFer, face of the league, and top 3 player in the league for a 31/32-year-old injury-prone AD who has never won anything as the #1 option?

If they were actually completely done with Doncic, why would they NOT try to field the best offer available? The fact that the Mavericks didn't even TRY to let the rest of the league know they were interested in trading away Doncic. The fact that they didn't even test the waters to see what Doncic could fetch back.

There is absolutely no logical explanation for any of this. It sounds like collusion at the highest level.

Trading Luka is 1 thing, but this is a completely crap offer that 28 other teams in the league would've been able to beat.

You're talking about a Luka Doncic who literally just brought the Mavs to the finals last year. You don't throw him away for Anthony Davis and 1 future pick. This whole thing is unbelievable and I refuse to believe that there aren't things going on behind the scenes.

Kings could trade Sabonis, Fox and Monk in a few hours and it still wouldn't be anywhere near as shocking as this. Is the supermax really that scary to these NBA owners? Holy ...

From Nico Harrison's wikipedia page...

During his work at Nike, he botched a 2013 presentation to Stephen Curry,[3] where according to Harrison he may have called him Seth, and the presentation used was made for Kevin Durant. This, along with not offering Curry a signature shoe, caused the superstar to switch from Nike and sign with Under Armor.

Well I guess he managed to do something worse than that apparently.

I think it's more with apron rule and hardcap combining with supermax. It's very hard to build a team if you have a player with supermax as it always takes 35% of your cap. It gives your no room for roster move.

Uhm...

...what? How is this even possible? How do the Lakers end up underpaying for every MVP candidate that gets traded their way? And why are rival GMs so insistent on bailing them out every other season? I just... can't even fathom this. It's so utterly dispiriting to watch LA luck into a massive title window for no reason. Yes, Luka's a poor defender who's rarely in top shape, but how is 31 year old and oft-injured Anthony Davis plus a single first rounder value for a 25 year old top-three talent in the NBA? What are the Mavs thinking?! Nico Harrison is somehow more daft than Vlade was for passing on Doncic in the first place.

This absolutely screws the Kings, too. Fox's value just dropped to significantly below whatever Kings fans may have been hoping for. How is he going to draw multiple first rounders in a trade if Doncic only netted one? I mean, AD is excellent when healthy, but he's not a championship unto himself. His injury history alone should have helped the Mavs secure no less than three first rounders as insurance. Unreal. Just unreal. The incompetence. Or collusion. Or something.
