Amick: De’Aaron Fox requests trade

Everyone wants to be Bill Simmons now. It’s a problem.
Yeah why not be Peter Gammons, Dan Shaughnessy or Bob Ryan? Or Frank DeFord. Have some real aspirations. If you're a Sac local and a wannabe writer hopefully the name Mark Kriedler rings a bell.

I read Simmons on web 1.0. Like the guy but he's a comedian not a sports writer.

So from a parse-your-words point of view, what Recee is saying is probably true. But she has been very careful in what she has said: Fox "has never asked for a trade", his agent "didn't request a trade" - he just suggested that now is the time.

Note what she has not said: "Fox wants to stay in Sac". He hasn't signed an extension and has indicated his unwillingness to. There are rumors everywhere that he is planning an exit to San Antonio, he has built a house in Texas, etc. Smoke, smoke, smoke.

Maybe one of these things is more true than the other.
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Like I have mentioned, the intel points to our FO starting this entire fiasco by bringing a trade proposal to Fox/Paul. Not the other way around.

There are reports that say that Fox is open to resigning with both SAC and SA. Does that sound like someone that is requesting a trade? Not to me. I would imagine that a fair amount of star players who were notified that their GM is considering trading them would be upset, but the reports tend to suggest that Fox would still be okay staying in SAC even after getting wind of this situation.

How does not signing an extension in the offseason now equate to “Fox wants a trade?” That’s quite a leap on your end. There are two obvious reasons as to why he wouldn’t sign an extension…
  1. Giving himself a chance at being eligible for a supermax
  2. Seeing how competitive the team is and if they are on an upward trajectory

As you can see, both of those are valid reasons for not signing an extension in this offseason. Regarding #2, if we don’t end up being a competitive team this year, if Monte doesn’t upgrade the roster, etc., then sure. He very well may request a trade or signal to the Kings that he doesn’t want to resign. Could I blame him? No.

The intel suggests that Monte came to Fox/Paul with a trade proposal. Not the other way around. This is why there are…
  • Reports that Wilcox called Paul (not Paul calling Wilcox)
  • Tweets from Recee claiming that Fox didn’t request a trade
  • Reports that still indicate that Fox is willing/open to resigning with SAC

And no, somebody purchasing real estate in their home towns is not nearly enough evidence that Fox has been planning a coup this entire time. Especially since there are reports that he would not sign an extension if traded to HOU (where one of his houses is).

I think people are misinterpreting the report Amick put out that says that Paul says it would be wise to move him. If the Kings are in fact open to trading Fox (which they clearly indicated they are when Wilcox called up Paul), it only makes sense for Paul to advise the Kings to trade him sooner so it doesn’t interfere with Fox’s ability to sign an extension with his new team. And there is a dollar amount difference when resigning/extending with your current team vs. choosing to sign with a brand new team in FA.
Amick told us over a month ago that the writing was on the wall for a Fox exit and that noise did not quiet down during the winning streak. Kings would not be looking to trade Fox unless they were given strong indication he wants to sign elsewhere. Why would they?

There are conflicting reports that say Fox will not sign anything that isn't a Super Max.

The way I read it is that Fox thought he’d be an all-nba player and wanted to wait until this offseason to re-sign with the Kings at a crazy stupid amount of money. However, when it became clear that he wasn’t getting all-nba AND the kings were playing poor basketball, he checked out and decided that he didn’t see a future in Sacramento anymore.

He brought in Rich Paul to put pressure on the Kings organization to bluff them out with a “either something needs to change and you improve this team, or I’m “leaving” in the offseason.” I think it attributed to the Kings firing Brown and instantly being named in trade rumors to improve the team around Fox because the Kings really wanted him long-term.

From Fox’s camp, they weren’t actually expecting the Kings to go on a tear after firing Mike Brown…. So now his camp is in awkward position because they could no longer use the Kings’ dysfunctionality and losing season as an excuse to force out. Fox has been playing hurt trying to salvage any remaining hope for all-nba… and it hasn’t worked out.

I think Fox went ahead and gave the green light to Rich Paul that he’s done and wants to be traded now. But he gets fined if he publicly says the quiet part out loud, and that’s why you’re getting all these reporters and Reece tip-toeing around the verbiage.

I think Klutch is trying to control the narrative because Fox doesn’t want his image to be tainted as a disgruntled diva like Butler or other stars because he’s never been that type of attention seeker.

I think Klutch is trying to play nice with the Kings right now by letting them know that if we don’t trade him now, they’re going to go on a full-blitz in the summer with the “Fox will only resign with the Spurs” talk.
This could certainly be a logical explanation of the situation, but it contradicts Recee's tweets or requires Recee to be juvenile and slimy.

That's certainly possible. Not everyone in the world has good character, but I'd like to think Recee is not one of those people but could be completely wrong about her.

When I moved to Portland I listed my house in Culver City without doing any repairs just hoping to get out clean. Got a few offers over asking so had my realtor reply to every person that made an offer that best and final were due tomorrow at 5pm. I did very well.

Kings should just tell every team that called yesterday that their best and final is due tomorrow at 5. We can always counter. Let's move on with a week to clean up the mess.

The team I'd be focusing on doing a deal with is HOU, even if its only to create a base line offer and resulted in the other more "prefered" destinations sweetening their offers and creating a bidding war.

Reason is, at worst (if Fox says he wont resign) you might be able to convive them it makes sense even as a 1.5 yr rental.

Fox / Huertsme / C.Jones for FVV / J.Smith / Whitmore (or Eason)

They'd have the next year and a half to convice Fox to stay & have the inside running on re-signing him longterm. They've given up Smith and Whitmore but they got so much talent & picks, its likey they are gonna have to choose between them all eventually. They might see it as worth the risk especially with how Thompson has been playing lately.

If thats our baseline or worst case scenario, could create a lot of flexability for discussions with Miami / Spurs etc about what they include and obviously if Fox says he'd resign in HOU...you can ask for much more.

I think we got a baseline the other night and that's part of why the team went to Paul. 1) communicate a possible can't say no offer is on the table so Fox's preferred destination can match and 2) ask if Fox would extend with whoever made it.

Paul took that as the opportunity to go on the offensive and make the FO look bad. But most likely everyone has been upfront that Fox would like to go to San Antonio before yesterday.

I love Fox, but trading him won't be the worst thing. Given our roster imbalance triggered by us going for BPA (or at least what Monte thought was BPA) in the draft and Keon's development, we need to trade a guard for some help in the front court. Fox is the most likely candidate; not only in terms of what we can get, but also the fact that he has not committed to us (now, has asked for a divorce), and the fact that Monk, Keon, and Carter are all significantly cheaper.

We did it with Haliburton earlier. That ultimately turned out to be a win. If we can get decent returns, we move on and hope some of the young guys will be able to step up when asked to be the main guy on a consistent basis.

so seriously asking. Is there something I’m missing about Stephon Castle? I admittedly haven’t watched every minute the Spurs have played this year but he’s a strong defender with good drive ability who can’t shoot worth a damn.
I don't think so. He's putting up numbers similar to Shai I guess in his rookie year but he's probably not a player you can count on until his next contract. Making him off limits in a Fox deal is insane. I don't think Castle ever gets to Fox's level.

Also pretending Vassell is "close" to off limits when his contract is an anchor is just teams being delusional. It's like saying Lyles is off the table in a Jaren Jackson Jr. move.

I’d just hope to see a move happen for Cam or Collins, preferably Cam that includes Huerter, parts and draft compensation. That could improve this team significantly enough to dispel any talks that the Kings aren’t trying to improve players around Fox.
As far as all the Fox trade talk, I don’t like it, think management could have constructed a more balanced team over the years which may have made this talk a non issue. Also can’t stand people like Rich Paul, will never listen to Adele again if they are still together, but there’s this consideration too. Fox recently turned 27, could easily play another ten years in the league. He seems like a devoted family man with young kids and like a whole lot of regular people might want to settle where they think best to raise their family.
The amount of money you can make by playing here or there, sort of loses significance once you’re talking that many dollars.

It was reported that Houston doesn't want to trade for Fox this season because they want to see how their current core plays out. If they were gokng to trade for him, it would be in the offseason, but I don't think the Kings can wait until then. Fox's value would go down tremendously, and there's no guarantee that Houston would even be interested in him.

I secretly do think that Klutch made calls to Houston who basically said they're not interested right now, and that's why you see Fox's camp pivot to San Antonio.
