Amick: De’Aaron Fox requests trade

So timeline is:

(1) Fox turns down extension
(2) Fox puts pressure on Kings to make changes, Klutch shows up to games and has meetings to that effect
(3) Kings get a call from a team that wants to know if Fox is interested in playing there
(4) Kings ask Fox if he's interested in going to that team
(5) Klutch leaks that Kings are shopping Fox, Shams and media run with this saying Kings are trying to trade him
(6) Kluch / Fox say "we didn't request a trade! we're just suggesting IF there's a trade . . . "

Seems pretty straightforward like Fox trying to force his way out formally asking and incurring fines and suspension

People are really obsessed with press conferences like somehow letting the whole league know our internal thought processes benefits US in any way.

A lot of this is still like a game of poker. Why show our cards?
Since press conferences generally take place after something occurs (like Brown's firing), what cards are you showing? I think it was a poor decision that Monte didn't get in front of the press and take the heat off his players (namely Fox) for the firing.

But the guy who was responsible for the firing wasn’t even on the same side of the earth when it happened

Extremely sloppy work.

You deliberately poison the pot by leaking it to reporters.

Force the teams hand.

I agree. You can hold our local media in fairly low regard while still believing this is a fairly basic part of the GM’s job description, no matter what continent the owner is on.

All signs point to Vivek firing. Also the team's play in the aftermath speaks for itself. It was a well deserved firing. And why throw Monte to the wolves who hate him who created much of the mess they are then going to blame Monte for?

Also I was additionally speaking to many folks on twitter and reddit demanding Kings do a presser right now to address the Fox situation.

I think lost in the press conference bit is that the same media demanding the press conference used their soap box to get Brown an extension and raise. The no press conference was absolutely a FU to them. And I am fine with it. No it is not a chapter in how to win friends and influence people, but it is a "hey we know better than you fools" and they do.

“Get the guy some help” is the same aggrieved perspective that led to the Bucks torpedoing their title chances by dumping all their useable assets and Jrue for old Dame.
At least Giannis was locked up. If Fox won't sign the extension before we start shipping picks that convey the year after he leaves he can F right off.

Ham saying we didn’t get Fox the help he needs, seriously?
Look at this team and it’s 10 fold what Demarcus had to work with. Fox has tools to work with. Maybe we have just really overvalued him?

Weird how good they've been since we fired Brown since we suck so bad no tools. We can all debate the roster construction and who is to blame but it turns out that it might actually be pretty good.

Two things can be true at once though.
So from a parse-your-words point of view, what Recee is saying is probably true. But she has been very careful in what she has said: Fox "has never asked for a trade", his agent "didn't request a trade" - he just suggested that now is the time.

Note what she has not said: "Fox wants to stay in Sac". He hasn't signed an extension and has indicated his unwillingness to. There are rumors everywhere that he is planning an exit to San Antonio, he has built a house in Texas, etc. Smoke, smoke, smoke.

Maybe one of these things is more true than the other.

He won't sign an extension and has all but requested a trade. And his agent told them under no uncertain terms that the best time to trade is now.

There's no plausible deniability here. He built a house in Texas ffs. And apparently was house shopping in San Antonio who have been "preparing their offers for Fox" for several months. Maybe they're building a real estate empire who knows. I think they've been engineering an exit for a while now. I have loved watching him play for us so whenever the seas are calm I let my guard down and fall back in love with him being here long term but this is the classic star wants out of small market but wants to keep the adoring fans story all over it. And if he just STFU and let Paul do his work he'll get the big cheers from those of us that understand as well as those of us who listen to the podbros and hate the team but still go to games.
How does not signing an extension in the offseason now equate to “Fox wants a trade?” That’s quite a leap on your end. There are two obvious reasons as to why he wouldn’t sign an extension…
  1. Giving himself a chance at being eligible for a supermax
  2. Seeing how competitive the team is and if they are on an upward trajectory

As you can see, both of those are valid reasons for not signing an extension in this offseason. Regarding #2, if we don’t end up being a competitive team this year, if Monte doesn’t upgrade the roster, etc., then sure. He very well may request a trade or signal to the Kings that he doesn’t want to resign. Could I blame him? No.

The intel suggests that Monte came to Fox/Paul with a trade proposal. Not the other way around. This is why there are…
  • Reports that Wilcox called Paul (not Paul calling Wilcox)
  • Tweets from Recee claiming that Fox didn’t request a trade
  • Reports that still indicate that Fox is willing/open to resigning with SAC

And no, somebody purchasing real estate in their home towns is not nearly enough evidence that Fox has been planning a coup this entire time. Especially since there are reports that he would not sign an extension if traded to HOU (where one of his houses is).

I think people are misinterpreting the report Amick put out that says that Paul says it would be wise to move him. If the Kings are in fact open to trading Fox (which they clearly indicated they are when Wilcox called up Paul), it only makes sense for Paul to advise the Kings to trade him sooner so it doesn’t interfere with Fox’s ability to sign an extension with his new team. And there is a dollar amount difference when resigning/extending with your current team vs. choosing to sign with a brand new team in FA.

The way I read it is that Fox thought he’d be an all-nba player and wanted to wait until this offseason to re-sign with the Kings at a crazy stupid amount of money. However, when it became clear that he wasn’t getting all-nba AND the kings were playing poor basketball, he checked out and decided that he didn’t see a future in Sacramento anymore.

He brought in Rich Paul to put pressure on the Kings organization to bluff them out with a “either something needs to change and you improve this team, or I’m “leaving” in the offseason.” I think it attributed to the Kings firing Brown and instantly being named in trade rumors to improve the team around Fox because the Kings really wanted him long-term.

From Fox’s camp, they weren’t actually expecting the Kings to go on a tear after firing Mike Brown…. So now his camp is in awkward position because they could no longer use the Kings’ dysfunctionality and losing season as an excuse to force out. Fox has been playing hurt trying to salvage any remaining hope for all-nba… and it hasn’t worked out.

I think Fox went ahead and gave the green light to Rich Paul that he’s done and wants to be traded now. But he gets fined if he publicly says the quiet part out loud, and that’s why you’re getting all these reporters and Reece tip-toeing around the verbiage.

I think Klutch is trying to control the narrative because Fox doesn’t want his image to be tainted as a disgruntled diva like Butler or other stars because he’s never been that type of attention seeker.

I think Klutch is trying to play nice with the Kings right now by letting them know that if we don’t trade him now, they’re going to go on a full-blitz in the summer with the “Fox will only resign with the Spurs” talk.
