Welcome Devin Carter

I was dubious about how Devin could contribute at this point in the season, but had been looking at it from a scoring perspective. I hadn't considered that he could find his way to contribute by rebounding and defending. Those are definitely areas of need that provide opportunities.
That elite athletic ability is literally something the Kings haven't had other than maybe in Fox in basically forever. Carter looks as fast on D as Fox does on O. Truly special defensive tools with this one.

Carter was likely quite nervous in his first NBA game. Pressure on one's self is still pressure when shooting. But defensive hustle is possible through nervousness, as we saw...although it might cause a foul or two. He will get over it.

Taking coaching pressure off of Keegan and Huerter to make every shot was my hope when Coach Christie took over. It may be too soon to take hold, but after a couple of games off, Keegan may emerge reborn. Let's hope.
And he took 3 shots, lol. And one was desperation. Once his teammates start actually seeing him on the floor and he them, this will be fine. Right now the defense, pick and roll play, and rebounding are what the team needs far more than scoring. The Kings can put up 138 without him scoring a bucket apparently.

Watched a video on the Grizzlies new found offense. They went from 30th in the league last year in PPG to 1st this year. The Grizzlies took a college offense and implemented it in the NBA. Their offense is pretty insane now, while still having their good defense.
We'll see. The Kings know full well with their history that once the playoffs come, it's who can feast in pick and roll, haha. Most college systems fly right out the window. Even Coachie I think once joked you can win an NBA ring with a college system when talking about the Princeton the Kings ran.

They should start Carter in the next game. His presence and impact on the court is too much to ignore. I want to see him in full minutes.
If he and Keon are playing together I'm down! Haha. I doubt Doug would do that. Looks like they had some kind of practice or got in work today but just getting remotely familiar between he and his teammates is probably going to be a start and stop thing for a few weeks. This might be like 1 good segment of ball followed by a team that looks completely disjointed, especially with Fox out. Then you tack on that this is still a 22 year old rookie that is working back into playing shape. That would be a pretty big gamble on top of Monk potentially running PG full time.

Next week, there are no games Tuesday through Thursday, so there will in fact be three days for Coach Christie to implement a few strategic changes and to help integrate Carter on the team.

Not a bad extended stint for him. Really impressive to go from a 6th month surgery to playing two g league games and then thrown on the greatest shooter of all time in your second pro game. His ability to drive and kick is really going to open things up offensively for him. Shot didn’t look the best but still make made 2 and had a third one get waved off due to a foul. Can’t wait to see him with 15 games under his belt.

His offense is still disjointed, but you see where he CAN be very easily and what his upside case is. Not afraid at all to pull or go look for offense *ahem Keegan ahem* and he gets downhill with ease. I think the one aspect of his offensive game that has looked really good has been his ability to get downhill and find the shooter. Had a possession at the end of the game where he just straight blew by Gui Santos and left him 3 steps behind in a blur. Another really good possession where he blew by a defender for a good floater from the foul line. There's absolutely offensive tools here for him to develop.

Defensively, he's as advertised. Feel confident saying that after just watching 4 of his pro games. Incredible PoA defender that gets active with hands, can stay in front, gets contests at the rim. Has to learn what's a foul and what isn't going to get called at this level, but already saw some improvement tonight vs game 1. Really good feel on how to play passing lanes. It's mind-boggling that a rookie that's missed as much time as he has looks as good as he does on defense, especially getting the Steph Curry assignment his second game.

He's also as natural a rebounder as a guard I've seen in a long time. Like Russ Westbrook-esq. Just uses his incredible wingspan and vert to get the ball at the apex and just always seems to be "in the right spot" to pull it down.

Overall, very pleased with his first action as a pro the last 4 games (2 pro, 2 G-League). Nothing so far has made me say "Ooo, he might need a few more weeks at the G-League to get ready". He's a 15-20 MPG guy right now.

Coach said one of Keon/Devin asked out of the game for a breather and I would assume it was Devin given he did the same in the G. Couple that with the near botched dunk and it’s pretty clear he doesn’t have his legs yet. That makes the rebounding that much more impressive. Agreed on the confident trigger, he will definitely be letting it fly if he has space.

So if you like Carter and are going to draft best player available who are you going to trade. Carter got minutes last night backing up Monk and if Fox is playing those minutes are not available.

If you are going to take Monte and your approach you have to have the balls to trade someone. So who is it?

Well, depends of a bunch of different factors. Carter first has to hit and then you worry about who and what you trade. Depends who's available.

I also think there's just room for Fox/Monk/DC/Keon to all play big roles.

I’d probably look to trade Monk as a part of a larger package for a star forward.
  • Fox, Carter, & Ellis would be a reasonably priced backcourt (allowing us to reallocate that cap to be used on the frontcourt)
  • Fox, Carter, & Ellis would allow us to have one of the best defensive guard rotations in the league (which I’m sure Christie would love to utilize)
  • Fox, Carter, & Ellis gives us good size & length for our guard rotation
  • I could see Carter developing offensively to give us a scoring & playmaking punch which would help lessen the blow from losing Monk and not leave Fox as the only option in our guard rotation.

As for which “star” forward, I’d be willing to check back-in on Markkanen since he’ll be eligible for trade again during the 2025 off-season. Monk, Huerter, & picks for Markkanen (with Monk likely going to a 3rd team and that 3rd team sending assets to UTA) seems like a solid deal for all a parties.

We’d have a starting lineup of…

Fox
Carter or Ellis
Murray
Markkanen
Sabonis

…and we’d still have a super sixth man in DeRozan to carry the bench as well as one of Carter or Ellis (whoever isn’t starting), Lyles (if we resign him), etc. That’s a pretty solid group that could do some damage.

I wouldn’t be opposed to keeping Monk and trading one of Carter and Ellis instead, but I really like the idea of having 96 minutes of elite/great guard defense each night (especially when our C is not a great rim protector). And if the star forward were trading for isn’t a good/great defender (I’d say Markkanen is around average), I think having that extra defense in the rotation will be important.
