Why for BKN? The Nets move on from their likely expiring 31 year old 3&D forward and lean further into their rebuild by adding for 4 2nd round picks and maintaining their cap space for 2025 since Lyles, Hyland, and Coffey are all expirings.

Why for LAC? The Clippers are 19th in ORTG and 6th in DRTG. They could really use another shotmaker to help carry the offense (especially since Leonard rarely plays). If Leonard is able to come back healthy, perhaps a Leonard, Harden, & DeRozan trio (surrounded by lengthy defenders who can space the floor) is enough to make some noise in the western conference. They could even look at making DeRozan a super 6th man which would allow the Clippers to prioritize a strong defensive starting lineup out of the gate.

SG - Powell / Mann / Christie
SF - DeRozan / Jones
PF - Leonard / Batum / Brown
C - Zubac / Bamba

Why for POR? The Blazers trade their "win now" vets and lean into their rebuild while at the same time save a lot of money this year, free up future cap, and add a recent lottery pick to their asset pool

Why for Kings? What do the Kings need? We need size, length, athleticism, defense, and shooting. As currently constructed, It's going to be difficult putting a closing lineup on the floor that does not lack those attributes (Fox - Monk - DeRozan - Murray - Sabonis). This trade injects a lot of length, athleticism, defense, and shooting into our rotation. Both Grant & DFS are long forwards that can help improve the defense while also helping Sabonis protect the rim/paint. Both of them can also space the floor and really open up the paint for Fox, Monk, and Sabonis to attack the rim.

I think the one thing we have realized since adding DeRozan is that we did in fact need a 4th go-to scorer to go along with Fox, Monk, & Sabonis. Although we're losing DeRozan's creation/scoring in this trade, Grant can help pickup that slack which still gives us 4 go-to scorers to rely on (Fox, Monk, Grant, & Sabonis).

Williams gives us a great backup C who is a terrific defender/rim protector and would be an excellent lob threat for Monk to throw passes to in the PnR. After this trade, I'd prefer to move Monk back to the bench and start a very big & long lineup of Fox - Murray - DFS - Grant - Sabonis. That's a lot of length, athleticism, defense, and shooting around Fox & Sabonis (not to mention another go-to scorer in Grant to fall back on). Then you have the Monk & Robert Williams combo coming off the bench which should be able to generate a lot of PnR offense for us.

Oh and this trade does not send out any future 1sts (nor does it touch the protections on our 2025 1st), so if this team fails at making the playoffs to end the year, we will have a lottery pick to leverage while also still having the flexibility to move future 1sts in a trade.

No interest in Grant and I would be really sad if we ship Carter before we see him suit up for us because we gave up better fits that could be helping us right now to get him here. Would just ... I don't know, "drastic" isn't even the right word.

Also if we're willing to move DDR - which is certainly something we should not rule out - I don't think you can take this mediocre a return.

I would assume the Kings view Carter as a lottery pick at this point. Look, the Kings were knocking on the door of either Kuz or Cam Johnson on draft night and as soon as Carter dropped it was DOA. I would doubt that has changed any considering he hasn't even played yet. That trade package is terrible for Sacramento.

Especially when DeRozan is on a solid contract and has had a better season than anyone the Kings are getting.

Terrible? Wow, that’s a…stance.

In regards to saying “I would doubt that has changed…” Well…a lot has changed since draft day. We’re currently 13-15. If your seat is getting hot as a GM, I wouldn’t be surprised if that calculus is changing.

You're giving up arguably the best value player in the deal and the best prospect. Grant could be a realistic target but far, far too much value there. Even if Carter was meh in the end it's pushing it.

Keegan just needs to hit shots that’s on him not other players he has to get right himself. Grant helps with spacing, defense , and size everything we need. I’ll take his contract as a plus because it won’t take much to get him on the other hand if you over spend for someone else and Fox leaves you’re screwed

I don't disagree, but if you're trading out DeRozan and bringing in Grant there shouldn't be any need to also add value in the process. Balancing trades should have value coming from somewhere else to make it work without having to also include anything that you don't want to throw in and I think Carter is exactly that. Maybe even Lyles as well.

But to address your point in all seriousness…
  • We’re 12th in the west
  • We have a 13-15 record
  • We have an owner that’s given off the impression that he wants to win now and he has a reputation for meddling

It would not surprise me at all if one or both of them are traded at the deadline. It may be considered desperate but if you’re getting pressure from your boss to win now and you’re worried that your job is on the line unless this team turns around, I wouldn’t say it’s an unrealistic outcome.

Setting aside if you think it’s realistic that DeRozan and/or Carter are traded, do you think this trade makes our team worse?

I disagree. It’s far from untouchable. If you want to talk about untouchable contracts, let’s discuss Beal…

Coming back to Grant, a long, athletic PF who can give you 18-20 PPG as a secondary option while shooting 40% from 3 and being (at worst) average on defense is going to hold value on a non-max contract.

And no, we’re not screwed if he’s not the answer. This trade proposal leaves all of our future 1sts intact. We still have flexibility and options to make adjustments down the road.

Lastly, considering…
  1. Grant’s usage is lower than DeRozan
  2. Granr is a better floor spacer than DeRozan
  3. Grant would allow Murray to play SF again
…I would think Grant would give Keegan more room to grow.

Well of course Carter has the highest trade value among the people we are sending out and receiving, but we’re really only sending out 1 positive asset (Carter) for 3 positive assets (Grant, DFS, & Williams). That’s only natural and that doesn’t mean the trade doesn’t make sense and that we’re overpaying.

Of course. Why do you think DeRozan is being sent to LAC in the proposal? To extract extra value that can be sent to POR and BKN.

The only positive asset we’re sending out is Carter and he hasn’t even played for the team this year. In exchange, we’re picking up 3 positive assets who happen to address our needs and help us win now. Admittedly, none of those 3 assets are as valuable as Carter but what do you expect when you’re trading 1 positive asset for 3 positive assets?

You think you can acquire Grant, DFS, and Williams for an unspecific, future 1st round pick, a neutral expiring in Lyles, and a neutral contract at best but possibly a negative contract in Huerter? Yeah, we disagree.

Yeah, but you're throwing in Carter as the value. DeRozan goes to a team that wants him, that team throws a pick at the Blazers. That's how that should work. I hardly think DeRozan is a player that the Kings would have to force a team to take. Not on that contract. It's a steal compared to his productivity.

That future 1st could have serious value and all of those players traded for aren't exactly burning the league up with value either. If those teams are actually holding onto 1st round pick value as reported then they'll have to wait. As they have been. The issue specifically is the Kings are hung up with that Huerter deal still so the Kings would be forced to send one of those future picks that seem to be all the rage with GM's these days. On the flipside obviously is if it doesn't work for Sac then they potentially gave up a very valuable resource from which to rebuild with or add in on a truly franchise altering trade.

No, I never said all 3 of those players hold 1st round value each. I said they all hold positive value. Again, we’re sending out 1 positive asset for 3 positive assets so of course the 1 asset we’re sending out would have the highest trade value.

We may just disagree on DeRozan’s value. Considering…
  • How much we got him for in the trade
  • The fact that he’s 35
  • The fact that our team has taken a step back this year record-wise after acquiring him
  • He’s not the easiest person to fit into a roster since he’s not a good floor spacer or defender
…I don’t think his trade value is as high as you think.
