Training Camp 2024

#65
Today is Media Day. It starts at noon PT. Actual training camp starts tomorrow. I thought it would be good to have a place to discuss the next three weeks in the same spot, in addition to individual topics.

The NBA has scheduled all the pre-season games on the West Coast, which is helpful for continuity. They start with a home-and-home pair against Golden State.

Also, for handy reference, here is ESPN's training camp roster:

Sabonis is listed at 6’11”. Did he grow?

Who is going to set screens for Memphis? The Lakers? Houston? You have been Mr. Negative since training camp opened lol.
I did start the thread, after all. Two years ago, I thought the Kings were very good at setting screens, but less so last season. They can certainly do it. Watch the double screens in this video from early last season against Minnesota. Several of the double screens ("high action pick and rolls") involve Harrison Barnes:

Looks like he was a fan favorite in MN.
JMac is like.. a legit good NBA player. Kind of the reality of the new CBA where some of these excellent rotation guys just got squeezed out of the money they should have been paid. If/when he gets healthy, he's going to be a Brown favorite because of how good he is on defense and an excellent bridge to Carter later on in the year.

An actually decent comparison is for him is like a polished/productive Davion Mitchell.

The extra juice Fox will have at the end of games, due to the DDR addition is enough to get me excited. I think the greatest season of his career is coming right up
I guess, he wants to win more games, especially in the playoffs, and push to the limits more than ever at this stage of his career. He's smart enough to put the individual glory aside and make the team win his priority now. I wouldn't be surprised if his stats go down.

Absolutely his "stats" will go down. But not to the extent some might think. DeAaron is a stone cold killer. When it's winning time, he elevates. It's probably the biggest knock on his game that he doesn't fully dial in until it's winning time.

4th quarter Fox is a real thing. For better or for worse, his winning juices don't truly flow until the game is up for grabs.

I'm as excited as I have been for this season because Domas is a 3 qtr killer. So is Keegan, and Keon is just rock solid. But Monk coming in off the bench in his accepted role is just championship material.

If Mike can get Huerter to buy in to a role as a bench sniper absolutely destroying backup SG/SF as well as providing minutes against starters we have ourselves a true second coming of the "bench mob". The two headed monster of Lyles and Len will have enough bench squads seeing Ls to the point our bench never let's the foot off the gas. Adding McLaughlin to that is icing baby.

I'm getting those "cautiously optimistic" vibes I was getting with the team that broke the streak of playoff drought. But this time it is "lightning in a bottle" vibes.

Training camp reports. As other have noted, the young guys (plus Skal Skal Labissière) are getting more of an opportunity in camp this year than they normally would have:

It turns out that Malik Monk was unable to play five-on-five basketball all summer due to the recovery from his knee injury. Coach Brown said that "Yesterday and today, he looked really good."

That's a bummer. Thought, he recovered and was ready to play. Any timetable on his return?

Statistically for sure, but, in terms of efficiency, i think we'll see a nice and hefty uptick
