The injury came at the worst possible time. Dude missed the last couple weeks of the season as we faltered.

He probably should have won. I get why he didn’t.
On the season + Play-in, including one game he missed midseason and the Dallas game where he was hurt 1 minute in, we were 5-8 without Monk (.385) and 42-29 ( .592) with Monk. That should count in his favor for the 6th man award, heavily.

Recency bias, “what have you done for me lately”

If Monk got hurt in the first two weeks of the season, it likely doesn’t matter. He gets hurt down the stretch when everyone remembers and is watching with Eagle eyes.

It’s not the right way to look at it, and I’m not defending it, but you’re deluding yourself if you think timing isn’t what played a major factor with this choice.

So looking at the actual voting, it appears that one of the 100 voters actually didn't vote at all. Of the remaining 99, 7 clowns left off Monk and 5 clowns left off Reid (some of these may be the same clowns). Since it was so close, I'd be interested to see what the totals looked like from only serious voters (i.e. those who included both Monk and Reid).

I was listening to The Ringer's Howard Beck on the radio yesterday and he brought up a similar point that's worth considering.

He said indeed many voters including himself had the belief that team success should weigh heavily into the best 6th man discussion. For how forgetful in general Sacramento Kings are in the major media, I don't doubt that some voters simply looked at the T'Wolves' current trajectory in the Playoffs versus the Kings being at home and decided that, fair or not, Naz Reid should win due to Monk's injury directly contributed to their inability to get to the Playoffs.

Punishing Monk for missing the last batch of games and it leading to us falling out of the playoffs, I sort of get it.

Rewarding a guy for starting, I don't. Was Naz the #2 pick in February? (I don't know)
Did Naz win because he was the best player in the reserve role or because he proved he was capable of being starting caliber when an all-star starter went down?

Monk losing out on the Sixth Man award by the smallest margin in the history of the current voting format is emblematic of how this whole Kings season has gone. Hopefully this isn't how his stay in Sacramento ends. He's as important to the team culture as anyone else in that locker room, coach or player.
I hope not either. Honestly, if it's the difference between keeping or losing him, I'd absolutely offer him a starting role.

As it stands he played more mpg than Huerter anyway. It definitely means the bench needs upgrading, but that's doable.

Votes were cast before the Play in started.

Monk in the starting line up would work if we are able to get a defensive stud/shot blocker opposite Domas at the 4/5 to balance the starting 5.

I expected nothing less. Nothing ever comes easy for this organization and the T-Wolves are everyone’s favorite team to root for seems like. It’s too bad because in my eyes he deserved it. Had we had 50 wins, I think he gets it. Team success probably played a role, even if it was a minimal one. In a race this tight, it was enough to make him lose it.

Sucks. Naz Reid was who I wanted the Kings to throw their cap space at last summer before Free Agency began. Too bad he re-signed with Minnesota even before the free agency period began. He could had been the big, long 3 point shooting big the Kings needed next to Sabonis.

Are we thinking the Kings as currently constructed, would have a better starting lineup with Monk over Keon Ellis?
IMO, Ellis balances the starting line up better, but Monk is more electric in offense. If we went with Monk's offense over Ellis's defense in the starting lineup, we need to put in a defensive/shot blocking big next to Sabonis to erase mistakes in defense.

Starting lineup, probably not. But we simply need Monk’s talent here. If a starting job makes him take a few million less you give it to him and figure it out from there.

If Malik walks this team is in trouble.

I ran the numbers and posted them somewhere earlier in this thread, I think. The Monk+starters lineup actually performed worse than those with Ellis or Huerter this year. Last season, though, the Monk lineup outperformed the Huerter lineup. Would be curious what is behind that, it certainly wasn’t what I expected.

So without a major move, you're still driving him to the airport if his resigning depends on a starting spot?
You know, if I'm the GM, I probably sign the deal and if things aren't dramatically different come January I am quietly shopping him.

Although I certainly listen to Brown's input on the matter as well. I don't think player should be dictating lineups as salary ploy.
