NFL 2023-2024 Thread

We can argue about this forever. What it comes down to is mindset. Some people are ok with just being competitive year in year out. Others like me consider it a huge failure if we can’t win the big game. There’s no right way or wrong way to be a fan, everyone is different. I will admit that I’m old. I grew up watching the 49ers win, win, and win, year in year out. And when they didn’t win it all, from Eddie DeBarrolo all the way down to Felicia at the front desk, the season was considered a huge failure. I have all the SF chronicle front pages with “49ERS WIN” plastered across the front. Attended all the parades. Met all of the hall of famers in Rocklin. The 49ers use to be all about the Super Bowl win at all cost and that’s just not the case anymore. Times change and I’m having a hard time letting what I grew up with go. That’s on me. I’ll continue to watch because I absolutely love this franchise but it’s hard to accept that they may not win another ring for the forseeable future. This season was our best chance. We had the most talent, a better QB, and a down chiefs team, and they still couldn’t get it done. This was the year of “no excuses”. Que sera sera…….
My daughter turns 19 in 3 months and she’s never seen a 49er Super Bowl ceremony. I’d like to experience just one with her.
Ah the classic "Back in my day, we won superbowls through 15 feet of snow!"

Where I have a problem with a lot of people posting on this forum these days, is they throw a silly premise out like "Brown is a second rate coach! Shanny is a second rate coach!" And the second they get pressed on that take, they have absolutely no response to what the solution would be. They just want to be the old man yelling at the clouds.

Shanny is not a perfect coach. He's made mistakes and he made some mistakes in the super bowl. He's also one of the best 3 coaches in the NFL. Both of these can be true at the same time.

Shanahan is also responsible for drafting and developing the team with the most Pro-Bowlers in the league. Kittle, Deebo, Aiyuk, Warner, Jennings, Greenlaw, Hufanga, Lenoir, Mitchell -- a lot of these guys were taken in later rounds and they've been solid starters or in some cases the best in the league at their position. The 49ers took a lot of heat for the Wishnowsky and Moody picks too and both were key contributors this season. It's not like he's hit on every pick -- that 2022 draft looks pretty bad, aside from nabbing a franchise QB with the last pick -- but drafting well has gotten him in position to compete for a championship every year.

Kyle inherited a team with a 2-14 record and zero future and he's built them into a perennial powerhouse -- 4 trips to the NFC Championship Game and 2 to the Super Bowl in 7 years. Anyone demanding more from Shanahan has lost all perspective on what success in professional sports looks like. No one is entitled to a championship. It sounds like getting all the way to the big game and losing is worse for some people than just being terrible every year. I can't understand that point of view.
It's the same people who hold MJ on such a pedestal for his 6/6 titles, but ignore the fact it took him 7 years to even get there. And he took a 2 year break in between each 3 peat While they clown LeBron for his finals losses, but don't acknowledge how insane it is he's gone to 10 finals in his 21 NBA straight seasons.

I told you the solution. There’s a Super Bowl winning coach with 8 Super Bowl rings sitting out there. If you think Kyle’s better than him then just say so.

When did I say that? LOL. And btw, I wouldn't fire Shanny for Billicheck because I don't even know if Bill wants to coach anymore. Not getting rid of a coach I can have for 20+ more years for a guy who maybe has a season or two left in him.

I said your premise is bad that Kyle isn't a great coach and the only solution is to go get the best coach of all-time. If Kyle is not a great coach, then there should be a pile of coaches better than him that would improve this team. Right?

You said yourself that any second rate coach would have won with this squad. So why is the only solution getting the GOAT coach?

You still won't answer the question, because you know you're wrong. If Kyle isn't a great coach and "any second rate coach" would have won with this roster, then which teams are those? Which teams would say "no" if we offered Kyle a 1v1 HC swap?

I already said Chiefs. Maybe Bal, but I'm pretty sure they'd take Shanny over Harbaugh. Certainly not a hard no.

None of us is on the team. And if you've ever played on any team than I don't have to tell you how disappointing it is when you lose. If you then had to come off the field to your friends and family telling you that "losing is unacceptable" and you've embarrassed "all of us" how would that make you feel? Being disappointed I understand, we're all disappointed. It's also not that serious. I don't think KC was the better team this year. There were some unfortunate injuries and missed plays that swung the game but at least half of the team played/coached well enough to win and that includes Coach Shanahan.

Our O-Line couldn't stop KC's pass rush when it mattered and our dominant front line on defense neutralized their running game right up until the last few minutes when suddenly everything broke right for KC, as tends to happen for them. I don't think this is anywhere close to the end of the line for this group. In fact, I think they'll be right back in the NFC Championship again next year and from there it's just another heart stopping 8 quarters to see if that will be our year. I feel all I really owe any team as a fan is positive energy. Enjoy the good times, commiserate in the bad times, and remember that in sports, as in life, failure is only ever temporary.

Felt like this entire conversation was hilarious and incredibly hard to follow and then I clicked the show ignored content button and came away even more hilarious and hard to follow.
Bill Belichick?! After the last half decade of crappiness and behind the times schematics and terrible player personnel decisions?! The guy who repeatedly went to bat for Joe Judge and Matt Patricia?!
I’d be fine with him as defensive coordinator but I wouldn’t pick him over Kyle in the year of our lord 2024

Feels like Kings/49er fans have gotten very very spoiled with our recent coaches and just forget what the hell a team run by Kenny Natt/Paul Westphal/Luke Walton/Jim Tomsula/Chip Kelly looks like. Doesn't mean we don't ever criticize moves made by Brown or Shanny, but always have to keep the macro in mind that it can get WAY WAY worse out there

I try to stay out of the 49ers talk since they aren’t my team, I’m a long suffering Bears fan. Reading the thread about choosing Shanahan over almost every NFL coach just seems a little wack. He’s good. Need to give credit to him. But he’s also got maybe the biggest collection of talent in the NFL. Not to take away from him but he does. Still he’s good.

I think KC, Baltimore, Detroit, GB, Houston, Indianapolis, Cincy, Cleveland, Pittsburgh? Turn down the opportunity to swap. For one, it would be weird to think of Shan in Pittsburgh instead of Tomlin…….like it just seem like a fit based on the history of the franchise.

Good coach who needs to actually win it all before anointing him onto such a greatness pedestal.

To be fair, Shanny and Lynch basically developed everything we currently have. They started with absolutely nothing their first season as a tandem.

So while the talent is extraordinary, they should get the credit for finding and developing this roster into what it is. It's not like Shanny got hired last year and inherited the best team in the NFL

I don’t disagree with anything you say…..they deserve credit. I just think other orgs head coaches have been good too. I think many if not most or more of the teams I listed are happy with who they have in place. Shanahan fits the team personality or philosophy or visa versa. Can’t imagine Detroit without Dan Campbell. They reflect him. I mean Shane Steichen with Indy was phenomenal this year. Are they going to continue to climb higher? I didn’t list Philly because something happened there this year.

I’m just putting perspective on it for better or worse. I know I would take Shanahan for the Bears. But that probably isn’t saying much.

Only coach I can get on board with firing. Defense was drastically different with nearly the same roster.

Unfortunately drafting a LB just became much more important than it was before Sunday.
