Training camp reports open thread 2022

If Fox and Mitchell are healthy and the game is contested, I would expect Delly's minutes to be 0.
Yeah, there's no chance he breaks the regular healthy rotation. Spent too much money on Monk, Huerter in the off-season, a top 10 pick on Mitchell in year 2, TD still needs guard minutes. I think Delly is the Kings version of Udonis Haslem (although probably can actually still give you spot minutes if needed). Dude who knows Brown and his system and is basically a player-coach on the bench,

Wouldn’t be surprised if he finds a way back onto the roster when all is said and done. Merrill is probably being cut regardless and who knows what’s going to happen on Final Cut down day
Part of me thinks he could probably have a larger role on another team and this was a factor but the other part hopes we'll do a 2-1 trade down the road and have room for a guy like Baze.

All in all it's a nice problem to have rather than praying for our second rounders to crack an 8 man rotation.

I saw it in the theater. It was "We have Weird Science at home" for my 11 year old mind but it appears that today many hold it in higher regard.

Even when I was a kid I had a higher regard for Real Genius than Weird Science. I've seen the latter maybe 2 or 3 times. The former? It's gotta be 30 or more.

Capt might have to double-check on this, but I thought Merrill's contract is partially guaranteed. Not sure if that means anything in him getting cut but *shrug*

(EDIT: I guess he's on an Exhibit 10 Deal...)

According to Hoopshype, His contract became fully guaranteed when he wasn't waived on September 29th.

From Spotrac:
Merrill has a $150,000 Guar up front,
KZ,Delly,Chima all have $250,000 Guar up front
KZ,Delly,Chima Have $500,000 Guar on Opening night
All 4 players have 1st year Salary fully Guar on 1/10/23

So if Kings decide to keep Merrill and drop one of the other 3 Players before Opening Night
It costs $250,000 instead of $150,000
Merrill is insurance in case of major injury of one of the other three

Sure but given his age and skill set he is also nice stash player. In a 3 point dominant league he could become a real gem if he develops well. So keeping him (A) Is a cheap prospect with high potential and (B) makes sure he doe NOT get snapped up by one of the cash strapped West Coast rivals where he could come back to haunt us.

Frankly im a bit surprised by the Cook and Baze cuts. They were the best players off the deep bench in preseason with Cook basically carrying the offensive load for the deep bench 3rd string and baze was giving some decent minutes. I thought for sure Cook belonged more than Delly. Baze belongs more than Metu.

Still say start KZ early and move Lyles to 3rd string squad. I think the starters will benefit from a significantly disruptive defender who can sort of hold the line against premier wing scorers in the early game. That allows them to get their offense on track. Cut Metu and Merrill and should have kept Cook or Baze.

Surprised me as well. I guess it depends on what Brown and McNair are really after. Delly is twice the passer that Cook is and half the shooter. But he is a better defender. I just question whether Delly is cooked or not at this point in his career. Pun intended. No idea what the Bazemore decision was based off of other than age.

I'm good with starting KZ as well. Makes sense to let him get up in the grill of the best offensive player right off the bat. Murray is going to get his minute regardless and there should be a few more shots available to him off the bench rather than competing with Fox, Sabonis and Barnes for shots. I'm probably premature on this but I think I trust his shot making ability over any other player on the roster. Yeah he's not going to be able to dribble the ball outside the 3pt line and then get you a bucket like Fox can, but within the offense, he looks to be the most efficient player we have if he can get himself any type of opening.

That 2nd unit with Murray in it all of a sudden has an insane amount of firepower with Mitchell-Monk-Murray-Holmes-TD/Lyles as your main bench subs too. That's a unit that should dominate pretty much every night; something we haven't been used to in a long time. Hell, that's a better starting 5 than a lot of the last 16 years lol.

I like the idea of focusing the usage better with the starters as well. Like you said, there's just not a lot of shots to go around after Fox/Sabonis/Barnes get their looks. Huerter isn't a low USG guy either. Starting KZ allows his minutes to be more valuable (defending a starting caliber wing) while Murray gets to the be lead with the 2nd unit. We'll see if it works, but I don't mind giving it a month or so to see how it works. I anticipate Murray will take the starting job anyway at some point mid-season.
