Kings trade Tyrese and Buddy for Sabonis and Holiday and Lamb

This trade might have been as much about getting rid of Buddy's salary than choosing between Fox/Hali. No idea if Indy insisted on Hali, but if Monte had a choice, trading Fox would have meant keeping Buddy on the roster, or else salaries wouldn't have worked. This allowed getting out of Buddy's salary too, but I still hate losing Hali. Thought he could be not only our best player, but the leader the team needs.
Amick basically said other teams did not really want Fox, so pretty safe to assume they insisted on Hali.

Can someone who feels this is a good trade please elaborate on what Sabonis brings to this team? It is mind boggling hilarious that all the people that like this trade are just repeating the same words over and over ... "all-star" ... "19-12". Like basketball is not just about counting stats. Just asking because it seems there is a lot of people in this thread getting on people for criticizing this trade (such as me), but yet are bringing nothing of substance to the table of why they actually like this trade besides empty cliches & phrases ...

- How will the Kings build a defense around Sabonis as a big?
- How will Mitchell & Fox coesist in the backcourt as two smallish guards?
- Explain how to solve the issue of the Kings 3 core pieces now (Fox, Sabonis, Mitchell) all being non-shooters?
- Where will the playmaking come from now? Fox & Mitchell are horrible passers and rarely set up the bigs
- How will they solve the forward problem now? Free agency? How are these shooters available that the Kings can sign to mask Fox/Sabonis not being able to shoot?

But hey Sabonis is an "all-star" so all these issues don't exist.
All good points and one Monte should have been asking. Instead it’s a desperation play to save his job.

Nah, they could have done a separate deal with Buddy. They don't need to trade Hali.

Not sure I like this. Sabonis is an excellent player but I cannot see Fox-Sabonis duo leading us to the play offs any time soon without massive roster re-jig which if history is to go by, won't be happening any time soon.

IMHO, we should have blown it up and hit the draft hard. As much as I love Fox, he would have been the one that I would trade and go with the Hali-Mitchell duo into a full blown rebuild. This very much feels like another push to break the play off drought just to make up the numbers

Oh gosh this is so dramatic. I could create a list of players who got worse within a few years of leaving us.
I thought players were only good because bad players are good here.
This move doesn't do it for me in a vacuum but a lot of people are talking about the team for a change.

We also got the player we wanted without giving up our most valuable assets, which were and probably still are our future firsts.

What's desperate about it? I keep seeing that word used, and it's sooooo weird. Again, 2x all-star. Advanced stats darling. 25 years old. No future firsts outgoing. No draft capital given up period. With the bonus of dumping Buddy's contract. All at the cost of a single long-term asset. It sucks to see Haliburton walking out the door, but this is not what a desperation play to save one's job looks like.

also we kept two other trade chips plus wildcard sweetener in Bagley.

also what if one of the two throw in players actually is an upgrade when it comes to the spot that Harkless is presently occupying?

Holliday's averaging 11 points on 38% shooting from three and is a solid wing defender. I know that's not mind-blowing or anything but he finally gives us the wing depth we've been begging for for two or three years.

really my main issue is/was we suck at defense and Sabonis doesn't help that perception but if Holliday actually is what you say and you just consider Buddy for Holliday and Hali for Sabonis as straight up deals we'd win both of them.

If anything, this is the bull-case for BPA in the draft above all else. You win in the draft, you continue to get the best talent you can and make a splash move at the right time to build your core. Kings don't do this if they didn't have confidence in Mitchell-Fox

McNair got a young, skilled, rebounding, tough All Star. He didn't have to spend his first rounder to do it like so many feared. He's the best passing big we've had since Webber and Divac. I underlined "tough" because the Kings have been pathetically soft and his toughness is sorely needed. He also knows what it takes to win, having been to the playoffs twice in his young career.

The saved first will be going out soon.

Majority of the Kings fan base calling for a trade to shake things up. Be careful what you wish for, especially when it involves the Kangz.

On another note, Pacers just became my team to root for in the East. Maybe my sole team with with how apathetic I'm feeling these days about the Kings.
Pacers have done well with both their trades so far. I'll definitely be tuning in to watch Hali and the Pacers - hopefully for Hali in the playoffs next year. VF21 liked the Pacers as well I think.

While I keep repeating that this wasn't my preferred deal, we all know the Kings were extremely high on Sabonis and Monte got his man. The cost was a solid and well loved player, but we also got to send out a boat anchor and Buddy Hield.

And that's the point, isn't it? The asset was preserved for another move. Monte can trade the pick before the deadline. He can package it as part of a larger deal with a very movable piece like Barnes. Or he can make his pick on draft day and go home. No matter how you slice it, Sabonis did not cost the Kings their future flexibility.

My bet: Bagley and the 2022 first. If you look back far enough on this thread, Tetsijin posted a tweet from a Pistons insider who basically said the main issue was the protections on the first. With Sabonis and Grant, Kings can essentially make it unprotected.
I hope we go after Washington first but it makes sense that Grant who has long been a target winds up being the guy. But I also wonder if now that Sabonis is secured we have some leverage too. I know Atlanta f'd us last year but I'd still pursue Collins too.
