This is a trade that couldn't be made till Dec 15th, but I would do this trade

Outgoing:
George Hill

Incoming:
Iman Shumpert
Channing Frye
Lakers 2018 1st rd pick held by Cleveland

Cleveland is struggling right now, and they could really use Hill. Not sure they would be willing to give up the pick, which should be at minimum, a lottery pick, ans should be high lottery if the Lakers come back to earth. Without the pick, I don't do the deal. Shumpert has one more year left on his deal and it's a player option. Frye is in the last year of his contract. So we would trading Hill for the 1st round pick. Of course that free's up minutes for Fox, and give Mason a chance to get on the floor. Sort of addition by subtraction.

The Cavs don't have the Lakers' 1st round pick in 2018. They have Brooklyn's 1st round pick in 2018. I would gladly take that pick for only taking on contracts like Shumpert & Frye, but I'm not sure the Cavs would go for it. I think they would like to get more in return than just Hill.

You know I don't focus on trades as much as you but I do have a question. Why would NOP give up that many assets for George Hill? I'm not enamored of him but it seems like he's being overvalued in this scenario.

Meh.....I think ideally, at least for me, is we deal Hill for a young SF instead of another pick. Who the SF is, I haven't looked but would be nice to not have another rookie but a more seasoned young guy who fits the core.

Well I wouldn't necessarily call those players assets. It's really a salary dump with a pick attached to get a solid guard who can defend, spread the floor, handle the ball, and play off the ball.

Personally, I think the Pelicans should blow it up (Davis too) but this would be a move to give them another solid player alongside Davis/Cousins.

There's none really out there that make sense for the other team. You're maybe looking at guys like Dekker, McDermott, etc. which is not attractive to me. I'd rather have a pick because we don't have a strong core yet. We need to acquire more elite young talent before we actually start thinking we have a core.

The part I question is that Hill is a "solid guard who can defend, spread the floor, handle the ball, and play off the ball." If he's that good, we could get better. He's not shown that, however, so I don't think NOP is gonna get all excited about bringing him over.

But you're forgetting the salary dump. This isn't just Hill for a pick. It's Hill for a pick & dead salary.

I've got a poll over at realgm on Hill's contract value

Majority of thosed polled view it as a negative value contract, with some seeing it as a neutral contract. Somewhere between 50-60 votes so far. He's not going to get back anything worth mentioning.

That's where I get confused. twslam07 said that "Why for NOP? Gives them another solid player to pair with Holiday, Davis, & Cousins..." Disregarding the salary/cap issue, I just don't buy that NOP is gonna view Hill as "another solid player."

But I always end up doing this. I nitpick trade deals to the point where I irritate the crap out of the people who really enjoy talking about them, so I'll stop now.

LOL, well I don't mind, and like to learn or consider things with criticisms.

But Hill is no longer young, injury risk, playing bad, and many people think he's on inflated salary.

Exactly. Which is why I'm questioning his assigned value in the OP. :)

Do you have a link to your poll? Trying to navigate that site drives me nuts.

I don't think he's on an inflated salary with the right team. If he is, then there is a crap ton of inflated salaries out there. How about George Hill to SA? Fits what they do, it's not a long term contract, Tony Parker is on the downward of his career.

I just have a hard time believing that a slow start to a season on a team with horrible supporting players all of a sudden means he's a bad contract. Just last year he posted:

3.45 RAPM (14th in the league) / 3.75 RPM (23rd in the league) / +7.8 On-Off / 31.5 MPG / .599 TS% / .477 FG% / .403 3PT% / .801 FT% / 16.9 PPG / 3.4 RPG / 4.2 APG / 1.0 SPG / 0.2 BPG / 1.7 TOPG

That's a solid player. I would like to think GMs don't have as many knee jerk reactions as posters found on RealGM.

The guys who talk contracts & trades all day disagree, well the vast proportion of them do. Some think it's neutral value, which we better hope would be the barometer for some teams, because we should cut our losses on an expiring if we can get it.

But these are hoops fans and not GM's right? If you look at his numbers last year, they were some of his best. Agreed that he is an injury risk but I don't believe his value has tanked to a negative value.

That segment of the forum area is the best place to go online to talk shop about trades, cap, contract value. You've got a lot of guys there on a daily basis who talk shop all day. You get perspective from every market.

Now people over there don't always agree, but my thinking after the poll, is if we can get an expiring we should do it Dec 15th. Too much risk holding out for value that may not come and reinvest next off season.

How about this one?

CLE Gets: Chris Paul, Eric Gordon, Buddy Hield, & Willie Cauley-Stein
CLE Gives: Kevin Love, Iman Shumpert, Jose Calderon, & 2018 BKN 1st

PG - Paul / Thomas / Rose / Calderon
SG - Gordon / Wade / Hield
SF - LeBron / Smith / Korver / Osman
PF - Crowder / Green
C - Thompson / Cauley-Stein / Frye / Zizic

HOU Gets: Kevin Love, George Hill, Iman Shumpert, & Jose Calderon
HOU Gives: Chris Paul, Eric Gordon, & Ryan Anderson

PG - Hill / Calderon / Brown / Taylor
SG - Harden / Shumpert / Paula
SF - Ariza / Moute / Williams
PF - Love / Tucker / Oliver
C - Capela / Nene / Black

SAC Gets: Ryan Anderson & 2018 BKN 1st
SAC Gives: George Hill, Buddy Hield, & Willie Cauley-Stein

PG - Fox / Mason
SG - Bogdanovic / Richardson / Carter
SF - Temple / Jackson
PF - Anderson / Labissiere / Randolph
C - Koufos / Papagiannis / Giles

Cavs improve their backcourt, get younger, and add another C to their depth chart. They could even try and move Thomas to improve elsewhere.
Rockets don't like their odds of retaining Paul in free agency and would rather keep Harden on the ball more often. Hill pairs well with Harden and Love allows them to keep their 2nd star.
Kings take on some salary and give up a couple of decent to good prospects with hopes that they have the chance to draft a star talent with the BKN pick.

With two picks in the lottery, we could come out with a Porter/Bridges and have a roster looking like this:

PG - Fox / Mason
SG - Bogdanovic / Richardson
SF - Bridges / Jackson
PF - Porter / Labissiere
C - Giles / Papagiannis

No chance Houston would do that.....the way they play, giving up a tremendous amount of 3 point shooting

I could see them declining but let's not pretend like Love & Hill aren't good 3pt shooters, and let's not pretend like Paul won't be a 33 year old expiring vs. Love who is 29 and is on the books for 2-3 more years.

The problem off the bat here is that you have to cut two Kings players to make this trade work, but you planned out the roster as if we could hold 17. Who would you cut?

Do Sampson & Cooley not count against the roster count? I thought we could have a couple of players in reno without it counting against the 15 man roster.

They are two-way deals, which are different than regular full-NBA deals. You can't convert the full-NBA deals of Asik/Moore/Ajinca into two-way deals to fit them into slots 16 and 17.

So two way deals are the only contracts that wouldn't be counted against the traditional 15 man roster while still having the advantage of having the rights to that player, right?
