Free Agency Open Thread (NBA and Kings!)

I hope the Wizards value Oubre.. I mean think he can fill some shoes.

I think us going after Otto now might mean all of our initial targets are off the board, hence why it wasn't our initial approach
I think he would have been our target no doubt but I think it was more about the timing of the offer.

IMHO, it was smart to wait until most of the big names commit and until you are also aware who other teams with cap are targetting. Once you have that figured out, you make your move. It means that the money that you have committed to the offer sheet is not as "dead" for 48 hours at it might have been otherwise.

Big names have just about all committed somewhere else. Kings remain the team with most money to spend and Porter is still sitting there waiting for interested parties to approach.

After a very nice draft, the Kings are gettin' a little too itchy......I like Porter, but $25 million per year is just overkill. He'd be getting top 20 player money, and my guess is he will not lead the Kings in scoring (thinking Hield will). I guess the Kings Org is burning holes in their pockets. I hope it works out.....
He's doesn't need to become a 20 a night guy to be important. If he's offering steady scoring in the mid-teens, is shooting well, and playing good defense, then that sort of player can have a lot of value in this league. Granted I do think he can boost his scoring in a more prominent role - at best he's currently the third option behind Beal and Wall, maybe fourth depending on if Morris ranks ahead of him or behind him - so coming to us he should have a more prominent role and perhaps that scoring can go up. If not, he still offers good 3&D ability and there's value in that even at this price point.

I don't think you have to worry too much about Porter signing here, I see Washington matching regardless. They can't afford to lose him when Wall is looking to win now, unless they can get a all-star caliber player in return, he is their starting SF until otherwise. It is nice to see the Kings being aggressive, they did their part. Flew across the country, met with him, gave him a pitch on why to sign an offer sheet. It's out of their hands now.

We have so many guys on rookie deals that we're looking to develop over the next few seasons, we can afford to overpay.

We don't need him to be a top flight scorer anyways. I'm more excited about the do it all glue guy potential. If he gets up to 18-20 ppg, that's gravy!

I'll be excited if we land Porter. Not my money! :p

I've said all along I love offering Porter the max. I'm not worried about missing out on anyone - it seems like we did play it super smart and made a few 2 year offers here and there first. If we miss out on Porter it's seriously going to handcuff the Wizards and we are going to have lots of splashy money next year to go with what will likely be a high draft pick, still a year before we have to start committing any real money on any of our young guys.

So if we miss on Porter, we can pretty much pick up whatever plan B target remains on a one year deal most likely or make a move to take on a large contract to help someone else out for future assets, because it sure looks like everyone else with money has c(r)apped themselves out.

I love it.
Precisely. Striking out on 2 year deals with these veteran players isn't the end of the world. They are looking to fill the roster out and give the youngins some guidance before taking the training wheels off. In the mean time, play it smart and conservative and if you can't sign any free agents of interest, swing a trade, re-sign one of your own FA's and call it a offseason.

Bringing Porter on board would make sense, I know his numbers don't stand out but he is efficient and a capable defender. He does need to pack on more pounds on his frame but the Kings are paying for the potential here, with him being 24 years old he still has a lot of time to grow and turn into a player that may surprise us since he won't be sharing the ball with a backcourt such as Wall & Beal taking the majority of the shots.

Plus if we really want a PF to go along with the SF, the offer to Porter doesn't hinder it. The Porter offer is great because I think the backup plan is Bojan and we force the same team to make two decisions, and we can get the latter on the cheap if they max Porter.

I don't bear any ill will to the team formerly known as the Bullets, but I just love it that we get to screw with them. Their fans must hate our guts.

I don't want any part of Bojan...he is good for one thing and one thing only, shooting. I know the team lacks in shooting but I'd rather bring in defense and grit/hustle. Bojan does nothing for the team on the defensive end.

Wizards also might want to keep space as they are rumored to be after Durant or Cousins. Cousins especially, they think Wall can lure him
Their chance at Durant was last summer. That ship has sailed. Cousins is the most realistic option here, IF he decides he doesn't want to play with Davis long term.

I'm guessing if we miss on Porter the idea is to bring in a guy like Bojan on a one year with a team option or easy buy out on year two and grab a SF in next year's draft. There are at least 3 projected to be near the top 5. Porter Jr, a euro guy and one more who escapes me.

If it's a one year rental or two year deal with a second year option, then fine. Otherwise, pass. I'd like the team to go after Jamychael Green, he is a perfect Joerger type of player.

Who the **** is JaMychal Green?
A very good, young, athletic power forward. He was starting pf for memphis and zbo came off the bench. Played 27 min a night averaged 9pts and 7boards. Hes a leaper.

Using tpa scores from nbamath.com there is only 6 players with positive tpa scores both offensively and defensively
Plauers like otto porter and durant. Notice his face next to pau and ontop of milsap

According to ESPN that supposed salary *this season* would put him at 8th or 9th in the NBA. Close enough.
That's because you still have a lot of players on old deals before the cap jumped up, once the rest of this free agency period shakes out (Hayward, Milsap, Gallinari) and especially going into the next 2 years 25 million per year is not going to look like a lot of money. I know that sounds crazy as that is a crap ton of money per year but that's just today's NBA economics.

As others have pointed out, this could all be moot anyway if Wiz match.

Not paying, but *over* paying for potential.

I hope he's worth it. Rolling the dice....

We could then roll the dice again next year if we then have as much cap space. And let's say one of fox, skal, heild, Giles, Richardson, mason pan out. Then we have a top 3. No imagine if 2 of the listed guys pan out???

"they" are saying "not worth it ... max for a 13-6 guy wtf lol". That kind of stuff.
Its all about perception. Harrison Barnes got himself a max contract last summer and it was always going to happen. Porter was always going to get the max.

Unfortunately, that is how the league works, especially with restricted free agents. The value of Porter for us is:

  • He is in the right age bracket
  • He has great size for position
  • He has improved every single year he has been in the league
  • He fits the position of need
  • He is an excellent defender and 3Pt shooter.
  • He was border line all star this past season
While he is unlikely to be an all-star in the west, there is always hope that he still has some significant improvement left in him. I see no reason why he still cannot improve to be a legitimate 17/7 guy that defends very well.

meh, its only a 4 year contract. Most of the kings young talent are rookie or second year players. About time they're due for a raise, Porter's contract would be expiring. Plus, aren't the kings 50 million under the cap? They can use that money to acquire talent. Its an overpay but it's a smart, and maybe even necessary overpay, for a player that fits the team like a glove.

Or see how JJ turns out. Let's not rule out that he could be a high level 3/D guy.

Kings can overpay for a guy as others have mentioned because of the young guys but also, Koufos will come off the books at some point and the young guys are ready to take on bigger roles.......same with Temple.

If Porter gets matched, we are in a big need of getting a SF. Justin Jackson is NOT a good option right now. He's a sit on the bench and watch and learn/go down to G League option.
