Free Agency

Man, I hope KD choses BOS (and teams up with Isaiah, which would be spectacularly entertaining!). If he chooses GSW, the whole Western Conference less the Warriors may as well take off the next 5 seasons. They'd only be competing for runner-up. Can you imagine trading out Barnes for the 2nd or 3rd best player on the world on a team that just set the record for NBA wins? It will almost be unfair. I will lose respect for Durant if he goes to GSW. The Celtics or return to OKC will garner my respect, and I would imagine most NBA fans feel somewhat the same. "Gee whiz, let me go unite with reigning the two-time MVP.....talk about taking the easy way out!"

One thing this offseason potentially tells me about Joerger is that he must have faith in Cousins, Cauley-Stein, Casspi & Collison being a solid core.

Given the trade rumors about Rudy, the non-interest in Ronfo or other FA point guards and the signing of system guys that will be good role players but not major difference makers it seems like coach thinks he can win with those guys and Afflalo as the starting five.

Also seems like the emphasis is on getting good character/team guys who are also veterans that know their roles.

If there's just enough room to sign Curry, then I have a vision of what is happening.

We've got 15 players right now counting ICuz, 14 without. But since it's the summer we're not constrained to be down to 15 players. We have probably left just enough to match Curry on whatever offer sheet he gets. Because of the Arenas provision, any offer sheet to Curry has to fit into the MLE for the first year. Now, we don't have an MLE, but we have left what looks to be suspiciously close to an MLE-level slot in our salary cap. So, assuming somebody comes along and tenders Seth an offer sheet (let's say it goes about 5.5/6/11/11.5, to average 8.5/year) we can match and hit the salary cap. Then we call free agency more or less done, with nothing but a room exception left, sign our rookies to the permitted 120%, giving ICuz an unguaranteed minimum deal. THEN we start the trade season. Now that we've used our cap room and we're over the cap, we can trade Ben/Gay/Koufos for bigger contracts if we want. Or sign and trade. Or whatever. But assuming we've got a trade(s) lined up, they aren't going to happen until we've used up all our cap - which won't happen until July 7th at the earliest.

Right now the best thing we can hope for will be for Seth to get an offer sheet soon, so we can make a decision and get on to the trades portion of the offseason.

Meh.

Temple just epitomizes our FA class. Decent vets, but no one who really moves the needle one way or the other. Temple is a bad offensive player, but does have some encouraging defensive numbers from last season

11th among SGs in DRPM

Wizards +5 defensively with him on the court as opposed to off

Positive DBPM (albeit, just 0.1)and a positive VORP at 0.5

Does have good size and can play multiple positions.

I will be irked if we don't get Curry.

Directed at no one in particular but when discussing Barnes and a couple others, can you specify which Barnes? Some of us are not as clever as you folks.

It's funny, you and I must be doing the same calculations at about the same time. I think Catanella & Vlade made sure they had exactly what they'd need to match offers for Seth.

They aren't counting on a trade - they are prepared to take their roster into the season. But if a trade is there that makes sense they can pull the trigger. Smart.

Matt Barnes.

Harrison Barnes is off the table I believe, got an offer sheet from Dallas.

The Kings have and probably will never sign free agents that "move the needle" in any significant way. What I think they have been doing is using free agency to address the small holes that collectively form gaping holes.

Example 1: Our perimeter defense was mess last season, probably worst in the league.
What FO did: Let Rondo walk, who was the catalyst of bad defense. Sign Afflalo and Temple. These guys aren't all world defenders but they are miles better than what we fielded last season. Temple in particular is a pretty stout, smart defender. With these signings and letting Rondo walk along with Joerger our perimeter defense should be improved, and maybe pretty dramatically tbh. Don't forget we have Cousins and WCS defending the paint which I still belive will be the ultimate benefactor of improved defense.

The one thing I would add is that there may be a trade lined up, but we can't do it until we spend up to the cap. I really hope so, honestly.

funky is right

Temple is a solid player. Solid defense, will hit some threes. Role player type who can start for you in a pinch. Played well when Beal was hurt last year.
Temple also is a good enough ball handler to play some PG and is an honest 6'6". He is an all around player you want on your team. as for these Free Agents being 30 Doug Christie was right around 30 when he came to the Kings (born in 1970 and Petrie traded for him in 2000).

Garret Temple is a good bench role player.

We got Doug Christie again?!?! :):)

(Actually, there are some similarities in size, passing and handling ability...maybe D...)

Informative post... Why do we need to hit the cap before finalizing trades?

Yeah he is 30, but he doesn't have a ton of miles on him. He's about as fresh a 30 as your going to find in the NBA. No reason not to believe will be in his absolute prime for us with this contract.

I wonder what the assessment of Garrett Temple would have been prior to his signing??? I would put a lot more merit in someone saying that signing a 30 year old combo guard with career 39% FG (and 30% from three point land) and giving him $24 million dollars was a GOOD idea BEFORE it happened. I didn't see anyone clamoring for his acquisition prior to it happening. I am not saying it won't work out, I am just saying....."meh".

That said, we do need more length and feistiness in the backcourt. But none of these signings really shift the offensive burden away from Big Cuz, whose scoring and passing efficiency is consistent with a team that wins 30 game annually. I am really not trying to be a downer, but I think you have to squint hard to see the merit in these additions. I liked our draft A LOT better.

I feel like more than that, they realized what they couldn't do so they made sure the things they could do met needs

There is the defensive wing/backcourt guy.....if Bogdanovich comes over this year, that would be outstanding......doubt he comes though. It wouldn't make financial sense for him.

Bogdan could be a Game Changer. My former player comparison would be Danny Ainge except Bogdan is bigger.
That's a good comparison. The video I watched of him reminded me of Manu a little bit. He does not need a lot of room to operate and make plays. He also a quick release and an effective escape dribble too, y' know, the skills Ben lacks.
