It would not shock me if that was at Vlade's request. Don't know one way or the other. That way, no long term commitments so nothing to walk away from. Either it worked his way or it didn't. If so, it looking pretty good right now. I think I'm on the hook for another year of league pass.
I suspect it was Vlade's choice. This was a big move for him and for all he knew he either wouldn't be comfortable with the job or would get too much interference by the owner. Both are valid concerns. Turns out he is very good at the job and the owner has stepped aside as much as we know.

more updates:

The Kings have also promoted Bill Pope to Pro Personnel Scout and added Dan Hartfield to the scouting dept

James Ham@James_Ham
Pope is a longtime NBA scout who is well respected throughout the league. He returns for his 4th season in Sac.

Hartfield joins the Kings after most recently serving as head video coordinator for the Grizz.
Since Pope is returning for his 4th season in Sac, did he have some say in the drafting of Ben and Nik?

Uh . . the whole world saw Vivek chose Nik and as someone already stated Ben was a logical choice at the time (as far as position and draft class).

I also agree we should hire Pollard.

I'm curious, who were his picks when we drafted T-Rob and BMac?
I don't know. I just remember so vividly hearing Scot on the radio right after we picked BMac and he said "he can't dribble with his left hand, if you can't by now... you can't." I thought he was nuts because King James himself had tweeted "y'all sleeping on Ben McLemore" during the draft. But Scot was right and Lebron was wrong.
