Thibs in Memphis. Holy crap...or just a shoulder shrug?

Wait a minute here....so the team decides to bring in Thibs to consult them NOW, after all this time while he was reportedly consulting other teams in the league as well. Spare me, I think Thibs wants to see first hand what Karl is dealing with here in person. I'm not getting excited over this because I don't see him coming here, but this is just too strange to be happening this late in the season. I suppose Karl was really desperate here, maybe he thinks he can keep his job still?

I'm going to take this at face value that Thibs is just continuing to make the rounds and visit other basketball teams because he's well respected in coaching circles and because he's an NBA lifer with nothing better to do in his time off. I don't think this is part of any hostile takeover, but it's not a bad thing for us to get his input and let him see our situation up close for a game. If we do consider hiring him in the future we'll want a clear idea of how he's going to fit in. The last thing we want to do is jump into another coaching hire and not have it work out. I like Thibs in theory, but he has to be a good fit with our players and our front office.

That being said... keep an eye out for Vlade and Thibodeau sharing a laugh together. ;)

"I think he's intrigued by our offense and we're probably intrigued by his defense." -Karl on Thibodeau

OMFG. Thibs intrigued by our offense? Delusion, thy name is George Karl.
Well, it may not be the most efficient or practical use of our guys, but Cousins overall game long term may have improved because of it. Also allowing Rondo to do his thing has been interesting.

There may be some value in the madness.

And we are looking for value. We need it all.

Cool to see. The greatness about George Karl is he is a flexible coach. He uses his assistants, and he does things like this. Thibs would absolutely respect George and all that he has done in this league. Just about every great coach in the NBA speaks extremely highly of George Karl.

Gregg Pop: "He’s an all-time great coach."

Yes I was suspicious like you. And yes, I've been told by numerous people with the team that Thibs is there at Coach Karl's request.
Thanks for communicating on Twitter to him.

That said, if Dave unquestionably believes what "numerous people with the team" are telling him, maybe I should be selling HIM the swampfront property.

Either he's incapable of seeing how a unified front of statements could be cover/smokescreen, or he's willfully propagating that smokescreen - I can't decide which would be worse.

OR.....ORRRRRR.....I have friends over there that have never lied to me in over a decade that were actually a part of the conversation to bring in Thibs. The ones that told me when Vlade fired Vance, he told Karl he could bring someone in to consult, but it had to be a defense guy. And Karl chose Thibs.

Your response to this could (and should) be "Well Dave are those the same people that told you Karl would be fired?"

To which I would say "touché". With this organization who the hell knows, although the Karl info wasn't wrong at the TIME. No accounting for last minute changes of plans. No one "lied" over there.

Note how I wasn't "pushing" anything, just relaying the same doubts most of us had, and bringing back the answer(s) I got.

How about we go in this direction:

Coaching is a fraternity. Karl is a future HOFer and is highly regarded by fellow coaches, many of which are a part of his "tree".

So how do you think it goes if a guy is brought in either by a coach OR GM towards the end of what is certainly a lame duck year to consult, and then takes over the following season? Think that goes over well?

We also haven't added that he's done this with other teams this year, and will continue to do it with other teams later this year.

Oh, and Thibs will have his pick of the open jobs, not to mention will command somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-8 million over 4 years. This team just spent a ton on Karl and will have a big fat payoff in June.

So listen, it's your right to think I'm being naive. And it's totally your right to interpret things differently and hold out hope. I for one would LOVE Thibs. But I'm also keenly aware that I wanted Karl, so I don't get to advocate for any more coaches.

I'm going to go ahead and let the only guy other than Malone to ever get DMC's attention help pick the guy. And that being said, yesterday's news officially took Thibs OFF the board for me, and he would've been my top pick.

I would love a Defensive guru like Thibs to take over as Kings head Coach. According to the article I link below he is just a consultant. His goal is to polish his own offensive skills as a Coach while imparting his specialty, DEFENSE.

Next stop GSW;)

"Thibodeuau reportedly is looking to fine-tune his offensive chops after parting ways with the Chicago Bulls following five seasons, and learning from Steve Kerr's Warriors (best offense) and Karl's Kings (13th) is a good game plan."

One more little gem of a quote from the article I linked to above:

"Detractors can knock Thibs all they want, but the guy gets results (255-139 career record). His teams are as tough and work as hard as any in the league, and they constantly overachieve under tough circumstances. He will be the hottest coaching candidate on the market, perhaps second only to Luke Walton or Jeff Van Gundy."

Thibs' chances of picking the Kings even before this latest consulting move with the franchise would have been slim.

The key note I am taking away for your post is that we will be once against looking to get a coach on a budget? Since Thibs' $6-8Million price is too much for us to pay?

Since George likes not coaching and deferring to his assistants maybe we hire Thibs as an "assistant" at a big salary and George can defer to him? :)

Give Thibs a couple Mil to be Co-Head Coach, Defensive Advisor, Defensive King, just make up some name to lock him into helping our Kings play better defense........please:)

Good one.

You craft a position much better online than you do on the radio.
Have you considered being a writer, more than a react-on-your-feet radio host?
Your positions are much more superficial and flippant on the radio.
I have friends over there that have never lied to me in over a decade that were actually a part of the conversation to bring in Thibs.
Serious question -
do you think those friends are incapable of exploiting your relationship to get franchise-friendly news/opinion on the airwaves?

Sure they could.

Once.

And as a rule, I don't report anything unless I get the same thing from more than one person.

Actually as a rule, I generally don't report anything. But when I do, I'm careful and sure. Honestly, I have missed on one thing in my Kings history, and that was the imminent Karl firing. But as I explained earlier, so did every other local and national writer, because it WAS going to happen. And still will, after the season.

But don't make the mistake of thinking I just go with everything I hear. I know it sounds flippant, but the amount of stuff that comes across my view that I sit on is more than you'd think. Breaking stories is too stressful. I prefer to steer my fellow fans in the right and correct direction, not get lost in narratives.

But I imagine you will make up your own mind, and have. And that's your right. I do what I do, take it or leave it.

As far as being "superficial and flippant" on the radio, feel free to back that up with examples. I'm sure it's more of a feeling than anything for you, right?

Either way, it's good. You've held this position for a while, and I would simply invite you to not listen or read anything I put out. Not being combative, just suggesting a course of action.
