Kings VP Vlade Divac has called free agent guard Rajon Rondo and requested that he visit Sacramento, a source said. Contract not offered YET
Good move from Vlade. This shouldnt be a "you're desperate, we're desperate lets make a deal". Show him your vision, show him its not as crazy as Woj and the national media will have you think and sell him on playing with the best big man in the game and Rudy. Make him buy in to the vision and not just look at Sacramento as a place to use to rehab your value.

A 3 & D player + Rondo would be great imo.
Question would be how we could sign both.
Answer: Maybe..

If the cap is at 67million next year, we currently have $58million guaranteed. If we let go of Stockton+Moreland, we'll have around $56million guaranteed. Let's say we get rid of Landry(6.5million). We'd have around $49.5million guaranteed. Which means, we'll have about $17.5million to spend.

We can offer Danny Green something like 3 years $36million while structuring his contract in a way where his 1st year has a lower cap hit. For ex, he could be paid $9million his first year, $15million his 2nd year, and $12million his 3rd year.

Therefore, we'd have $8.5million left in cap..which should be enough for Rondo. We could also structure it to have a low cap hit his 1st year too.

Rumors are that the cap could actually be higher by 2million then predicted.

When was the last time we signed a former NBA Champion?
Actually an interesting question in the literal sense - meaning ignoring whether Rondo might be a good signing or not.

There are probably three ways to answer this question.

1) The technical answer
To the best of my ability to tell, the most recent player that the Kings signed as a free agent who at that time had an NBA championship ring was Melvin Ely, in 2009. However, Ely was not signed to a year-long contract - he was signed to a training camp contract and did not make the team. Furthermore, while he was traded to the '06-'07 champion Spurs at the deadline, he did not play a single minute in the playoffs.

2) The guy who played a bit
We signed Beno Udrih in 2007. He was a member of both the '04-'05 and the '06-'07 Spurs. In '04-'05 he played 11.5 minutes per game in the playoffs. So he was a useful bench piece on a champion.

(I am also counting here Chucky Brown, who averaged 15.5 playoff minutes for the '94-'95 Rockets but played only a total of 92 minutes for us in '01-'02 and Bill Wennington, who averaged <10 playoff minutes for both the '95-'96 and '97-'98 Bulls but only played a total of 57 minutes for the '99-'00 Kings.

3) The most recent guy who definitely counts
Vernon Maxwell was the starting SG for the '93-'94 Rockets, and when he signed with the Kings in '98-'99 he played 22 minutes per game, so he was a real contributor to both teams.

I'm actually cheering against the Mavs this offseason. We need the Mavs and Trailblazers to have a sucky offseason so room can open for the 7th and 8th seeds in the West. Please...talent towards the East.
I'm hoping the Mavs do wind up overpaying for Matthews and Jordan. Both guys are good pieces but probably not worth the contracts they're going to be offered. That team is looking more and more like we did post-Webber trade.

Haha seeing a lot of "if rondo returns to form" crap ain't happening folks. Forget how one of the worst 3pt shooting teams gets worse with this move. But rondo hasn't and can't play defense for a number of years.

It's nice to talk positive and convince yourself of a player cause we might sign him but Rondo is finished.

I'm just saying, don't say you are thinking like a FO and VF21 is not - for not all FO think bad attitude will always spell disaster.
Why can't I say that? She even admitted that she was thinking like a fan. Why can't I regurgitate what she said?

Not all FOs think bad attitude will always spell disaster? Well obviously. Whenever you deal in such absolutes, it rarely holds true, but that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying if you're a FO, you must consider his attitude problems before you make him an offer. If the positives outweigh the negatives, make him an offer! But for anyone to simply cast his attitude problems to the side it means they are missing a big chunk of the story when contemplating a contract offer.

We cannot structure a contract like that. We can only give Danny Green 4.5% raises each year. Your deal suggests a 66.6% raise in the second year.

Not saying he will return to form but most medical experts that I have heard talking about knee's they say that it takes 2 full years to recover from them which would be roughly when he's playing for us.

The more we discuss it.. I think we really need Nik to come back as the dead-eye 3 shooter he was advertised as. If he doesn't, we're hurting.
I absolutely agree. He becomes key in this scenario. Ben, too. Those guys need to really live up to their potential. Ben's potential is still insane.

I'm willing to cut Rondo some slack based solely on the fact he got stuck in a point guard graveyard of a franchise. While Carlisle is a heck of a coach, he isn't exactly known for being chummy with his point guards (chased zombie Jason Kidd out of town, derailed a young Darren Collison's career).

Are you an expert in basketball?

Apparently, the more knowledgeable guy than most of us fans in this board thinks otherwise.
I'd put my trust on Vlade.

Plus we really can't underestimate the power of a contract season. (Especially a contract season before a massive unprecedented salary cap jump.)

While it seems the Kings have strong interest in Rondo....I'd like to know how they plan on spacing the floor? you know...I figured Karl likes that type of spacing with his players.
I'll reiterate this until we either sign Rondo or not: You get the guy and worry about spacing later. You target your highest priorities first.

Well the Blazers just spent 8 million on Aminu.....wow. Dudes are gonna get paid, Lopez 3 years 60 million....Jeezus. Boogies contract will end up being Steph Curry level bargain.
