Cauley-Stein is able to execute his personal defensive game plan: Be annoying. His influences, in this regard, are obscure.
His fifth-grade coach with the Dodge City (Kans.) Mavericks used to bother Cauley-Stein’s shots in practice by poking him in the stomach; this inspired the quick, flat-handed jabs he now uses on opponents. (“And it works,” he says. “Because who wants to be poked in the stomach?”) At Olathe Northwest High, a defender kept pinching him through his jersey and shorts, and Cauley-Stein’s mind became so occupied with thoughts of Dude, get off of me! that he realized, This could work. He became a pincher-on-the-sly in the post. Last summer, when he visited family in Florida and was playing one-on-one in a driveway, his great-uncle Cane started yelling at Cauley-Stein to use his 7-2 wingspan to obscure his man’s line of vision. “Cane is an old-time dude, kinda crazy, and I’d just met him, so I’m not really listening to him at first,” Cauley-Stein says. “But his O.G. tricks made enough sense for me to start trying them this year, and they’ve worked too.”

Willie Cauley-Stein stroking the mid-range today. Just hit 8 or 9 straight 18-footers. Form looks solid. He's in very good shape physically.

Willie Cauley-Stein can shoot the ball a bit. Making some 3s here in a workout setting at a fairly nice clip. Has nice, smooth mechanics.

There were Towns and Russell in attendance as well, so I would imagine, Kings were represented at this workout. Eurocamp starts on 6th, so I guess, this event, plus another on East coast tomorrow, I believe, is the reason Kings don't run any team workouts. Eurocamp ends on 8th, so Kings will probably see prospects daily from 10th till the draft.

For what its worth, a couple of days ago Vlade said in an interview that we had 5 or 6 names in mind and were most likely looking at a 2, 3 or 4.

Draftexpress has Winslow going at 4, WCS at 5 and Mudiay falling to us in their latest mock. Could live with that as well.
I like Winslow a lot and while I could be wrong (and frequently am) I don't see star potential and I don't see a great fit with Boogie and Rudy. If you think the guy is a going to be a monster player then you draft him regardless of fit and figure it out, but I just don't get that feeling with Winslow. I think he's going to be a very solid pro for a long time though, maybe a Jimmy Butler level SG in time.

And if that's the case, I am hoping he goes before the Kings pick. That would mean one of WCS or Mudiay drops to us. Personally I hope it's WCS.

I've read a few comments about how Mudiay has a much higher ceiling and Cauley-Stein won't be as much of an impact player etc but I think people are dismissing the impact WCS will have on the defensive end. And quite honestly I think they are overplaying his offensive deficiencies. Transition, putbacks, lobs from Cousins when his man leaves WCS to double, drive and dish from guards, and rolling to the basket on the P&R will all be areas that he'll score and score efficiently. If he really does develop a consistent jumper from midrange or even further then I think he's the ideal frontcourt mate for Cousins.

There's a lot to like about Mudiay but realistically he's not going to contribute much to a Kings team this season. But Collison and especially Andre Miller would be two very good mentors to have. And he definitely has a collection of physical attributes and on court skills that could lead to him being a star in the NBA in time.

So essentially on draft night I'll be rooting for Porzingis and/or Winslow to go before the 6th pick. If they were to go 4 & 5 I'd be very curious to see who the Kings decide on.

I can see Winslow going at 4 to Knicks. He seems like a Kobe type player for the triangle.

With Scott Skiles in Orlando, they could pick WCS at 5.

That would leave the Kings with Mudiay, which I am ok with. I think he could be a Derrick Rose/Damion Lillard type PG.

I really like both Towns and Russell, but they're not falling to 6 no matter what. After those two guys, I actually have Stanley Johnson, Emmanuel Mudiay, and Myles Turner ranked over Okafor, Winslow, and Cauley-Stein.

Jahlil Okafor is a solid big man and a better defender than he gets credit for, but I don't see him as a franchise guy. He should be a reliable scoring option who'll probably peak as an All-Star, like an Elton Brand or Al Jefferson, but to be a franchise guy he has to be the best player on a contending team and I don't see that happening. Next to Cousins I really don't see that happening. I really like Justise Winslow because he's a competitor and he plays hard, but he looks like a 3 and D roleplayer in the making. Certainly wouldn't mind having him on the team, but I don't see a huge amount of upside with him. Duke's championship run seems to have inflated his value. Willie Cauley-Stein is a bit of an enigma for me. He consistently disappointed me at Kentucky and the question I've been asking myself is whether Calipari's platoon rotations held him back or masked his weaknesses. On paper he sounds like a perfect fit -- terrific size and athletic profile, an above the rim threat if unguarded, the perfect pick-and-roll defender. If I hadn't watched him play I'd be all over him as our pick. My impression of him as a player though is that he's going to disappoint a lot of people who expect to see an All-NBA defender. He's really capable when he's locked in and focused, but his rebounding technique is poor and he doesn't have the timing and body control of an elite shotblocker. He likes to play back on the perimeter and rely on his speed and reach to close the gap on offensive players and I'm not sure that's going to work as well in the NBA. He frustrates me in the same way Jason Thompson does because I can see all the physical tools and potential there, but it doesn't come together into a player that dominates in any aspect of the game. And if he can't dominate at the college level, he's not a top 10 pick. Bajaden watches a lot more college basketball than I do though and he loves Cauley-Stein, so take my analysis for what it's worth. Personally, I hope someone else drafts him.

So my thinking at #6 is that I'll take whoever is left of Stanley Johnson and Emmanuel Mudiay. If both are on the board, I'm going to try really hard to get pick #7,8, or 9 and draft both of them. It's not because I think rookies are inherently more valuable than veterans, it's because both of them have star potential on both ends of the court and players like that are few and far between. Sure it'll take some time and patience to get them there, but we get one crack at a free agent this off-season and I feel like Cousins, Gay, free-agent to be named, and a competent supporting cast with a renewed focus under George Karl next year gives us a solid shot at a lower playoff seed. If Myles Turner is still on the board in the 11-14 range I'd try and get a pick there to add him simply because of his potential. I think he's a top 5 talent so that's a steal in the late lottery. If he does develop, your backup PF/C role is handled for the next 10 years. I'm not sure what it would take to add those additional picks though. Typically, teams ask for too much. Miami's pick could be available if they're trying to save cap space for Durant.
