Draft position thread

Just ran the ESPN lottery mock draft and got the second pick--and with Embiid off the table, Chad Ford thinks the Kings would take Exum over Parker and Wiggins. Interesting.

Yes, I've done this game off and on for a while, and Exum is the guy that he's had second for the Kings. If Exum is off the table, he picks Smart for the Kings. NOT what I would want.

Do not want Exum after his comments about wanting to be a Laker. There's nothing more irritating than a pretentious young punk who thinks he is above the game and gets to choose who he wants to play for after accomplishing absolutely nothing. He's the last guy you'd want on this team.

I would agree with you but we still draft him if he's there. Everybody has a favorite team and teams that like to play for. He will like it here as long as we have DMC/Gay here plus he fits like a glove with those two and Ben.

Lance Briggs is a HUGE 49er fan. His dream was to play for the 49ers when he was in high school. Of course he has been a Bear his whole career. I don't think it's a big deal someone coming out and saying who they would love to play for. We would control his contract for 5 years and can pay him the most.

I don't care. He's too young to care about such things. I just care if he can play, and from what little I've seen I'd take a shot with him if he were available.

Hearsay is funny thing as actual quote was:

“Definitely L.A. is one option,” he said. “I’ve been to L.A. many times and I love the city, and it is a great city. If I get the opportunity to go to L.A. and play for the Lakers, I know I’ll have love for the city. And their fans are loyal and they have the rivalry with the Clippers. But just to be in an environment where you have a great player like Kobe, where you have a mentor in a way as a rookie, I think that would be the best option.”
He likes Kobe, because of love for the game and work ethics, not his character, so Exum likes the environment, that groomed Bryant.

That makes me like him even more. He wants to be good. He has the smarts and the humility to want to learn from a great player. I have no problem with that whatsoever.

That's good to hear. I can't find the article I read but it made it sound like he was more like Eli Manning or Kobe Bryant where he was going to refuse to play for any of the top drafting teams.

Well, the article, I copied the quote from, was named "Exum thinks, Lakers is the best option" or some such, while offering this quote as the only evidence. Then BS "executives around the League believe, Exum might force his way to Lakers" report...I get, how the idea might've stuck in your head.

Exum is a big fan of Kobe's. Kobe has mentioned that Exum would be a welcome addition to the team. If you had watched any of the interviews with Exum, you'd never call him a young punk, or a player that thinks he above the game. He's friends with Kobe, what would you expect him to say about being a Laker? My god, you guys just take anything and run with it. Because one team executive says something about Exum forcing his way to the Lakers doesn't mean that Exum or his agent have any intention of doing so.. How about this. We react to things that have actually happened, instead of things that might or might not happen. I'd draft Exum in a heartbeat. And in fact, if we were to draft him, he'd have no choice if he wants to play in the NBA. Webber didn't want to be here, and that worked out just fine..

There are 21 games left in the Kings schedule. If the Kings play around .500 for the rest of the season and win 10 of those games, they will have a winning percentage of .390. The .390 percentage would have yielded the 10th slot for ping pong balls for each of the last two years.

Thank you for this terrifying statistic :(

It's easy to forget that every pro athlete was a huge fan of somebody before they came into the league, most likely since they were little kids at 8 or 9. It's not reasonable to ask them to immediately renounce their fandom of a team they've held for 10+ years.

As long as the player plays their best and helping their team, I have no problem with which teams a player may be a fan of

It's not that big of a deal, really. We're not playing .500 ball. Looking at the schedule, I think we win 4 or 5 more games the rest of the way. Most likely we'll still be tied with at least one team (Utah, Lakers, and Boston also have 22 wins right now) and end up somewhere in the 4-7 range. That's the sweet spot for the draft lotto. It's very very likely that at least 1 team in the 4-7 range will end up with a top 3 pick. So it's all luck at that point. There's of course a chance that we slide and most likely we're not going to be picking from the cream of the crop, but it's just the draft. Someone is going to get lucky, everyone else is going to have to keep building their team the hard way.

were not as bad/arent tanking as bad as other teams and so i really do see us slipping to 10th here. We will lose out in the log jam thats currently sitting at 22 wins.

id much rather consider the possibility that vivek knew this draft was stacked and struck up a deal with stern that we would get the #1 pick here for his efforts in keeping the kings in sacto

I hate the word tank and hate the concept of tanking when we already have two stars and one who thinks he is a star. We shouldn't be in any position where the concept is even relevant as we don't need a star. Here we are though with a cruddy record. I wondered last night, along with Jerry and Grant, what on earth happened to our free throw shooting in the second half. They were mystified and I was waiting for them to use the word "tank." I dared them to use the word. How can a team that seems unable to miss a free throw in one half come out and be unable to make a free throw in the second half?

I look forward to today's game to see if there is any similar pattern. I have to look forward to something in this game. As to anyone who might think my attentions are a bit weird, show up in the game thread as I do game after losing game and complain to me there. I'm a fan trying to maintain some interest. I am trying to figure out what is wrong. The inner GM in me is trying to find a way out of this mess. Clearly simply getting rid of the stench of the old ownership is not the simple solution. It may be a reasonable start but more has to happen.

Many people have come to a similar solution and it has to do with the so called Big Three.

Just curious, what is it about the last three games we played that makes you think were going to win enough games to slide all the way to the 10th position. Sliding to the 7th position would be easy. All we would have to do right now is win one game and have the other three teams were tied with lose. I have to admit though, the east is pretty bad.

FYI, guys and gals, the TANK IS IN. Malone said as much in the last post game. He said now that it is numerically impossible to reach the playoffs he would be resting people - Isaiah, Gay, Cousins - and they will be "showcasing" the young guys to see what they can do. So from here on out, management and coaching are on the same page - they want as many ping pong balls as possible.

Someone should have asked him, "what are you resting them for?". They have a couple months to rest after these games :D

He also had a little smile on his face when he described why he was playing McLemore so much in this game - like there's no way in hell I'd play him that much if we were in a a playoff race, but now is a totally different story...:)

3/23 vs Bucks
4/02 vs Lakers
DMC's tendinitis better flair up agin if this tank is serious.

The Lakers look to be the "competition." And in looking at the forthcoming schedules of both teams, the Lakers have a lot more winnable games than the Kings. Playing White, McCallum, McLemore, and Gray should be of assistance in this quest for greatness.:p

Maybe we can just put some chairs out on the floor for the other team to run around. Maybe we can get McLemore up to 30 shots a game. By seasons end, he'll need a rest.

I doubt we get a better pick than the lakers. They have a pretty hard schedule the rest of the season and look like they are trying to lose. I wouldn't be surprised if they end the season with only 2 more wins.

As far as our draft position goes, I'm not really worried about it. Despite all the hype it received originally, none of the players look head and shoulders better than the others. Vonleh, hood, saric, or even Payton have just as good of a chance at being the best player in the draft as wiggins, Parker, or exum do IMO.
