So according to sac town we are able to trade our pick. They said PDA said this so there offer for Rondo is ben/it/ and a pick.
If Sacramento wants to swing for the fences, they could probably get
Rajon Rondo. It likely mean giving up Isaiah Thomas and
Ben McLemore and maybe even this year's draft pick
(apparently we can trade it according to Pete D'Alessandro, it's just complicated). The
Celtics aren't going to trade Rondo unless they get quite a bit back. I'm not sure it'd be totally worth it either given his recent injury history.
It's not entirely clear what is meant by "we can trade it but it's complicated". There appear to be four legal scenarios under which we can trade this year's draft pick:
1) Wait until draft day. On draft day, our 2014 pick (which we presume we will keep due to the 1-12 protection) will no longer be a future pick, and will not be subject to the Stepien Rule.
2) Get that protected pick back. Before any other transactions, we could make a trade with the Bulls that gets us our protected pick back. If we reacquire that pick we are free of all Stepien Rule considerations (until we trade another first-rounder).
3) Trade for another 2014 pick. If we acquire another team's (unprotected) 2014 pick, we can trade our own because the Stepien Rule only requires us to have
a first-round pick, not necessarily
our own first-round pick.
4) Trade "right to swap picks". This is essentially a special case of 3) above. We can, for instance, trade another team the right to swap first-round picks with us (13-30 protected this year, etc. - the inverse of the Cleveland->Chicago pick's protection), which would guarantee that we would have a first-rounder.
If there are any other ways that PDA has of getting around the Stepien Rule, I'd love to hear them, because I can't come up with any.
Of the above options, #4 is the only one that can be easily done (i.e., without a second team or a second transaction) before the trade deadline. Of course, Boston is worse than we are right now, so the right to swap (with their own pick) probably wouldn't be too enticing. It turns out that Boston also owns Philly's pick (only if Philly makes the playoffs, which would seem unlikely, and even then would be about a #15 pick) and they own the worse of Brooklyn (currently 16th) and Atlanta's (currently 19th) picks. My best guess is that if we were to make a "pick" deal with Boston, it would be to give the Celtics the right to swap our 2014 pick for the Brooklyn/Atlanta pick. Most likely that would drop us down about 10 slots. For a healthy Rondo, it would be tough to say no, right?
