Malone calls out team for no defense

When asked about Marcus Thornton:

'I can no longer be a hypocrite. I've been a hypocrite all year. I got the job in June and I've preached defense. That's what I believe in. We're one of the worst defensive teams in the league. And so ... uh ... I"m not done yet (to a reporter who was trying to ask another question)... and so, for me, if you don't play defense, not just Marcus Thornton, but if you don't play defense I can't play you.

It's ridiculous that we give up 54% to this team. They played a back-to-back last night and they come into our building and just score at will, so ... he didn't play many minutes (meaning MT) - I put Ben in there - but he has to adapt to the situation. With Rudy being out he got more touches. Tonight he didn't get more touches but every player can find a way to impact the game in some way, shape or form if you don't get touches."

Whoa. I mean freaking WHOA!

EDIT: I've posted a complete transcript of the post-game interview with Malone in post #139. I tried to get it as accurate as possible, but any errors are mine. I also changed the title of the thread to reflect more accurately what Malone said.

Nothing on IT? Funny how Malone hasn't yet called out IT for his defense ... sometimes it really makes you wonder. What impact did Conley have on the game again?

I'm a fan of an honest coach but he is throwing his players way under the bus. MT has confidence issues already and this isn't going to help.

I missed the first part of the question. It was about Thornton but I didn't realize it was going to be interesting. I hit the record button as soon as I could...

What's his "non-hypocritical" reason for why he plays Thomas so many minutes?
I think something finally snapped. Something he saw tonight finally put him over the edge... I hope they post the whole interview because I'd love to hear the whole question.

I ALWAYS record the game AND the post-game interview with Malone. I can't believe the first time I stop the stupid DVR early is the time when I wish the most I had let it run. I'm going to set my DVR to record the rebroadcast and, if it gets Malone's interview, I'll post a more complete transcript tomorrow.

I never watch post game interviews.. but if he really did snap, I'd like to see this one..
He didn't snap like get really red-faced and yell or anything. He did what my dad used to do that would scare the crap out of me and my brother. He got very stern faced and talked almost in a monotone.

It think there's something strange going on. Kings call players only meeting couple weeks ago reportedly to hash out IT role or what it's become (ie, selfish ball hog) and general defensive disaster. But not a lot is leaked out to press. Now coach refuses to call out IT at least by name while bozos Grant and Jerry whistle to the same tune. I don't get it!?

We're trying to trade IT.
We're not allowed to bash him in the media like that.
It takes his market value down.
Keep on preachin' the hustlin' husky pizza guy

Oh he's had chippy post games before, hints of cracking a bit. This would be upping it though. And really on our team singling out MT isn't really fair, although maybe it was this game (not smart if you're trying to move him though). Maybe its Malone's way of trying to send a message to the whole team, but if you do it then you are kind of boxing yourself into a corner where you have to really be consistent or risk looking like a major hypocrite.

Agreed. I'd like to see what happens when he says something against Cousins....
It will break all hell loose and we'd be getting a new coach cause we're obviously not going to trade Cousins.

I read a Cousins interview recently and by the way the guy talks you can tell how immature he still is. It's quite sad actually considering he's a grown ass man. No excuses like his "I was only 19 years old what do you expect from a 19 year old with millions in his pocket"
Lameeeee

I just don't like coaches that talk bad about their players in post-game interviews. I understand he's probably trying to cover his ass but most of the players will not appreciate being thrown under the bus over and over again.

I like Coach Malone and he's right about Thornton's defense. However, he could make the same criticism of pretty much every player on the team, which means nobody would see floor time. Singling out Thornton is poor form, IMO, especially when there are other players on the team playing more minutes and playing the same level of defense, or worse.

And, as several others have pointed out, where's the criticism of IT's refusal to share the ball down the stretch of close games?

If you're gonna lay it on one player, lay it on them all equally.

1. Malone and Cousins are on the same page.
2. Oh please.

Yeah, for now.
But lets see how long Cousins remains a pro when his team is deteriorating and Malone loses and says something stupid to Cousins and Cousins with his ego takes it the wrong way....

I'll be the first to say it:
Expect a big issue to occur before the season is over.

I guess he can't sit IT because Jimmer doesn't play defense either? Lame. At least Jimmer makes an effort to get his teammates going. And he's usually out there with the 2nd string.

Gee. Team defense. Needing to work together as a group. Not all the defensive woes on one guy.

What.A.Damn.Concept.
No one denies that team defense is important. Team defense is the entire armour made out of all the individual chains. There's only so much you can do to cover a weak link. If team defense were all there was to it guys like Tony Allen and Thabo wouldn't be in the league.

Oh and speaking of TEAM stuff, what about team offense? Anyone ever heard of that?
